The selection combines licensed films, a recent theatrical release, and Netflix films, so a movie’s arrival date does not guarantee that it remains in your country’s catalog today.
The seven-film list was reported by BGR on April 30, 2025. Netflix availability, ratings, and dates can vary by territory.

The seven movies, in arrival order
Mid90s — May 1
Jonah Hill’s feature directorial debut follows 13-year-old Stevie, who finds belonging in Los Angeles skate culture while coping with an abusive home environment. It is an intimate, rough-edged coming-of-age drama rather than a conventional sports movie.

Past Lives — May 1
Celine Song’s romantic drama centers on childhood friends Nora and Hae Sung, whose lives intersect again across time and distance. Its real subject is not a simple love triangle but memory, migration, identity, timing, and the roads people do not take.
Choose it for: a quiet, emotionally serious relationship film. Content note: separation, grief, immigration, and emotional loss.

Nonnas — May 9
Inspired by Joe Scaravella’s Staten Island restaurant Enoteca Maria, where grandmothers from different cultures cook, this Netflix film stars Vince Vaughn, Susan Sarandon, and Linda Cardellini. The premise blends food, family, community, and second chances.
Choose it for: a warm, food-centered crowd-pleaser. “Inspired by a true story” is the accurate description; individual plot details should not be treated as a literal historical record.
Catalog status: Netflix film, listed for May 9 in Netflix’s 2025 U.S. announcement.
Smile — May 14
Parker Finn’s horror film follows therapist Rose Cotter after she witnesses a patient’s suicide and becomes trapped in a terrifying chain of smiling apparitions. The recurring smile is both the supernatural threat and the film’s defining visual idea.

Catalog status: licensed horror film. The May 14 date appears in the original U.S. list.
Fear Street: Prom Queen — May 23
Set in Shadyside in 1988, this standalone entry in Netflix’s Fear Street universe follows prom-queen candidates as they begin disappearing and a killer turns the school’s biggest event into a nightmare. It draws on R.L. Stine’s The Prom Queen novel without requiring viewers to have watched the 2021 trilogy.
The cast includes India Fowler, Suzanna Son, Fina Strazza, David Iacono, Ella Rubin, Ariana Greenblatt, Chris Klein, Lili Taylor, and Katherine Waterston. Netflix’s official materials confirm the standalone premise and May 23 premiere: release details, cast guide, trailer, and title page.

What “new to Netflix” does—and does not—tell you
- It is not a premiere label. Mid90s, Past Lives, Smile, and The Wild Robot were already released before their May 2025 Netflix arrivals.
- It is not an ownership label. A film can be newly added while remaining produced and distributed by another studio.
- It is not a worldwide date. Netflix catalogs are territory-specific, and the dates here are for the U.S. schedule reported in 2025.
- It is not a promise of current streaming access. A historical arrival date does not establish that a title is still available in August 2026.
Practical viewing plan
- For a family audience, begin with The Wild Robot.
- For the strongest serious relationship drama, choose Past Lives.
- For a warm group watch, choose Nonnas.
- For horror, pick Smile for psychological dread or Fear Street: Prom Queen for slasher energy.
- Choose Mid90s for a raw coming-of-age story and Heart Eyes when you want romance with deliberately playful gore.
If you need a Netflix account, use the official signup page or help center. Netflix pricing and plan features vary by country and change over time; none of the seven films is assigned a specific plan here.
The Bottom Line
For a family pick, start with The Wild Robot; for serious drama, choose Past Lives; for a new Netflix horror release, try Fear Street: Prom Queen; and for a food-centered crowd-pleaser, choose Nonnas. Check your local Netflix catalog before planning a screening, especially for the licensed films.
