Which August 2024 Netflix movie is best for an action fan?
The River Wild is the strongest choice for a viewer who wants a physical survival story with a clear, dangerous setting. The 1994 action thriller follows a family rafting trip that turns into a hostage situation after fugitives force a white-water guide and her family down the river.
Meryl Streep plays the rafting guide, with Kevin Bacon and David Strathairn also among the principal cast. The river is more than scenery: the rapids, limited escape routes, and hostile terrain create the film’s central pressure. The combination of a recognizable cast, Curtis Hanson’s direction, and a straightforward survival hook makes The River Wild a useful overlooked-1990s thriller recommendation. The film’s Netflix title page identifies the catalog listing, while availability remains territory-dependent.
Is The Union a good choice for an easy action movie?
The Union is the most overtly commercial and accessible selection: a 2024 Netflix action-comedy about an ordinary New Jersey construction worker recruited by his former high-school sweetheart for an espionage mission.
Mark Wahlberg plays Mike, the construction worker, opposite Halle Berry, with J.K. Simmons also in the cast. The premise gets its appeal from the contrast between everyday blue-collar life and international spy work, while the former-romantic relationship supplies a comic and personal reason for the mission. Viewers looking for a familiar-stars action vehicle rather than a demanding spy thriller are the clearest audience. Netflix’s official synopsis for The Union confirms the construction-worker-to-spy setup and principal cast.
Why was Pearl one of the best new horror additions?
Pearl is the list’s major modern-horror recommendation, following an isolated Texas farm girl in 1918 whose obsession with becoming a star grows increasingly extreme as she pursues what she believes is her big break.
Mia Goth leads the film, with David Corenswet and Tandi Wright in key roles. The period setting and ambitious protagonist give the story a different shape from a conventional contemporary slasher: the horror develops through isolation, frustration, performance, and a consuming desire for recognition. Pearl also works as an entry point into Ti West and Mia Goth’s connected X-related trilogy, although viewers should expect stylized, psychologically intense horror rather than a family-friendly scare film. Netflix classifies the title as both horror and thriller on its official Pearl page.

Bride of Chucky is the deliberately campy franchise choice, shifting the series further toward horror-comedy excess by bringing Chucky’s former lover, Tiffany, into the story.
After reviving Chucky, Tiffany helps transfer her spirit into a new doll body as the pair pursue a plan to become human again. Jennifer Tilly, Brad Dourif, and Katherine Heigl are among the principal cast. The film’s appeal is its heightened tone: viewers should expect outrageous relationship dynamics, franchise mythology, and macabre comedy alongside the doll-killer premise. Bride of Chucky is best suited to cult-horror viewers or a spooky-season marathon, not someone seeking restrained psychological horror. Netflix describes the film as both horror and comedy on its official title page.
What kind of movie is The Spectacular Now?
The Spectacular Now is a grounded independent teen romantic drama about a charismatic, hard-partying high-school student who begins an unlikely relationship with a smart, focused classmate during their final year.
Miles Teller and Shailene Woodley lead the film, with Brie Larson also in the cast. Unlike the month’s action and horror selections, the film’s stakes come from emotional immaturity, difficult choices, and the uncertainty of leaving high school. The relationship is not simply a glossy teen-romance device; the film’s appeal lies in its attention to conflicting personalities and the pressures surrounding adulthood. Netflix categorizes the movie as drama, independent, romantic, teen, and book-based on the official The Spectacular Now page.

Is Monster House suitable for family Halloween viewing?
Monster House is the most family-oriented selection, using animation and child protagonists to tell a spooky mystery about three friends investigating a vacant house that appears to be alive and hungry for people.
Mitchel Musso, Sam Lerner, and Spencer Locke lead the voice cast, which also includes Steve Buscemi, Kathleen Turner, Jason Lee, and Maggie Gyllenhaal. The film bridges the end of summer and Halloween season: the animated format and youthful perspective make it accessible to families, while the sentient-house premise gives it a genuinely eerie identity for older children and adults. Parents should still consider a child’s sensitivity to supernatural peril before choosing it. Netflix lists the film on its official Monster House page.
What is The Deliverance about?
The Deliverance is a supernatural-horror film about a woman who moves her family into a new home for a fresh start and discovers that something evil already lives there.

The film arrived on August 30, 2024, making it the month’s newest selection and its clearest late-month supernatural-horror option. Netflix describes the Lee Daniels film as inspired by terrifying true events. That wording should not be confused with a claim that the movie is a literal factual reenactment: the recommendation source connects the premise loosely with the Latoya Ammons case but does not establish the film as a documentary or exact retelling. Netflix’s official The Deliverance page provides the film’s synopsis and listing.

Are these movies still on Netflix?
The August 2024 U.S. Netflix availability of these seven movies does not establish their current availability. Netflix removes and adds licensed titles on a territory-by-territory schedule, and an official title page can show a film as unavailable in the country being queried. Before publication or viewing, check the relevant Netflix title page while signed in from the United States or consult a current regional availability guide.
Rank #4
The safest historical summary is that four titles were listed as August 1 additions, two arrived August 16, and The Deliverance arrived August 30. The list should be read as a record of what was new to U.S. Netflix during August 2024, not as a current catalog guarantee.
