For most U.S. iPhone and iPad users, Tubi is the best place to start. It offers a broad, legal, on-demand movie catalog without a required subscription or credit card. Pluto TV is better if you also want live channels, while Kanopy and Hoopla are the strongest choices when you have access through a participating library or university.
“Free” usually means one of two things: ad-supported streaming or borrowing through a library-funded service. Catalogs, availability, app requirements, and channel lineups change, so the recommendations below reflect the U.S. services and app information available as of August 16, 2026—not a permanent promise that any particular movie will remain available.
Quick comparison
| App | Best for | Ads? | Library card? | On-demand movies? | Live TV? | Offline viewing? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tubi | Best overall | Yes | No | Yes | Some live TV | Not promised |
| Pluto TV | Live channels and movies | Yes | No | Yes | Yes | Not promised |

| Kanopy | Ad-free documentaries and art-house films | No for library viewing | Yes | Yes | No | Not promised |
| Hoopla | Library borrowing and downloads | No for borrowed content | Yes | Yes | No | Yes, where enabled |
The first five are generally free, ad-supported services. Kanopy and Hoopla do not require a consumer streaming subscription, but they do require an eligible library card, university login, or other participating institution.
1. Tubi: best overall free movie app
Verdict: Choose Tubi first if you want straightforward, on-demand movie streaming without entering payment information.

Tubi describes its service as free and legal, with no subscription or credit card required. Its catalog includes movies and television from studios such as Paramount, Lionsgate, and MGM. The free model is funded by short commercial breaks rather than a monthly fee. See Tubi’s service page and Tubi’s explanation of its advertising model.
Tubi is a good fit for cord-cutters, families, and anyone who wants to select a movie rather than wait for it to appear on a live channel. An optional account can synchronize a watchlist and playback progress across devices, but “no paid subscription required” is the important distinction—not a guarantee that every feature works without registration.
The U.S. App Store listing checked for this article requires iOS 16.0 or later and iPadOS 16.0 or later. App requirements can change; check the current listing before installing.

2. Pluto TV: best for live channels plus movies
Verdict: Install Pluto TV if you like channel surfing but also want an on-demand movie library.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Pluto TV combines live television channels with free, ad-supported movies and shows. Its U.S. App Store listing describes a legal service and advertises more than 250 live channels, although channel counts and lineups are changeable and location-dependent.
The live-TV format is useful when you want news, sports, genre channels, or background entertainment in addition to movies. The compromise is control: a particular film may be available on demand, scheduled on a channel, or absent from your local lineup. Ads are part of the free service.
Use Pluto TV when the traditional television experience appeals to you. Choose Tubi instead when your priority is finding a specific film quickly through an on-demand interface.

3. The Roku App: best broad free-TV hub
Verdict: The Roku App is a strong U.S. option for free movies and live TV, especially if you already own a Roku device.

The iPhone and iPad product is called The Roku App (Official), not simply “The Roku Channel.” It can stream free movies and live television through The Roku Channel, while also working as a Roku remote, voice-search tool, and casting utility. Roku explains its free movie and TV offering in its support documentation.
This makes the app more versatile—but also less focused—than Tubi. Some content may be paid, and features can depend on a Roku account, compatible Roku hardware, or the user’s location. The App Store listing identifies mobile access to The Roku Channel as U.S.-only.
When using the app as a remote or for casting, keep the iPhone or iPad and Roku device on the same wireless network. Do not assume that every program shown in the broader Roku ecosystem is free to watch.

4. Plex: best for free streaming and personal media
Verdict: Plex is ideal if you want free ad-supported movies alongside your own legally acquired media collection.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPlex offers free ad-supported movies, television, and live channels in its iOS and iPadOS app. Its App Store listing currently describes hundreds of free full-length movies and more than 600 free live-TV channels; those are service claims that may change with licensing and region.
Plex also has a separate personal-media use case. With a Plex Media Server running on a computer or compatible network storage device, you can organize and stream your own media to the app. That setup is optional and is not required for Plex’s free streaming catalog.
The interface can feel more complicated than Tubi or Pluto TV, and Plex includes paid features and Plex Pass functionality. Those upgrades should not be confused with the free, ad-supported movie service.
Download Plex from the U.S. App Store.
5. YouTube: best for familiar access
Verdict: YouTube is a useful supplementary option, but it is less consistently organized as a free movie service.

Google provides an official free, ad-supported movie and television selection, including titles from local and global studios. You can use the familiar YouTube app and search interface without paying for YouTube Premium. Premium subscriptions may change the advertising experience, but they are not necessary for the free movie selection. See Google’s help page about free movies and TV.
Search results can mix free films with rentals, purchases, trailers, clips, incomplete uploads, and unofficial user content. Look for clearly identified official movie listings or YouTube’s free-movie area rather than assuming that any full-length upload is authorized.
YouTube is particularly convenient when you already use the app or are searching for an older or independently distributed film. For dependable browsing by free-movie categories, Tubi or Pluto TV is usually easier.
6. Kanopy: best ad-free library service
Verdict: Kanopy is the best choice for ad-free documentaries, independent films, international cinema, classics, and art-house programming—if your library or institution participates.
Kanopy’s films are provided through participating public libraries, universities, and other institutions. The iPhone and iPad app highlights curated film collections including documentaries, festival films, and Criterion Collection titles. Library viewing is ad-free, making Kanopy a better fit than advertising-supported services for viewers who dislike commercial interruptions.
Access is not universal. You need an eligible library card or institutional login, and a library card alone does not guarantee that the library subscribes to Kanopy. Participating institutions may also apply monthly play-credit limits or other borrowing rules, so check the rules attached to your account.
Kanopy is curated rather than designed to maximize the number of current mainstream releases. Its strength is film quality and range, not a promise of the newest theatrical movies.
Download Kanopy from the U.S. App Store.
7. Hoopla: best for library borrowing and offline viewing
Verdict: Choose Hoopla when your participating library supports it and you want to borrow movies—often with the option to download them for offline playback.
Rank #4

Hoopla offers movies, television, documentaries, anime, and other digital media through participating public libraries. Its App Store listing requires a free library card from a participating library and advertises no ads for borrowed content, along with offline downloads where supported.
Hoopla’s borrowing limits, loan periods, title availability, and download rules are controlled by the library and can vary. A library may support Hoopla while a particular movie remains unavailable because of licensing or monthly checkout limits.
Compared with Kanopy, Hoopla is a broader digital-library service and may be less film-focused. It is nevertheless the more useful choice for travel, limited data, or unreliable connectivity when the specific title can be downloaded.
Download Hoopla from the U.S. App Store.

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchWhat “free” really means
| Free model | Examples | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Free with ads | Tubi, Pluto TV, The Roku App, Plex, some YouTube movies | Commercial breaks and changing catalogs |
| Free with library access | Kanopy and Hoopla | Eligible card or institution, plus possible borrowing limits |
| Free app with paid content mixed in | YouTube, Plex, and Roku | Check whether a title is free, rented, purchased, or premium |
| Unofficial or pirated streaming | Unlicensed apps and websites | Legal, privacy, malware, and security risks |
None of these services should be described as universally “completely free.” Ads, optional accounts, library eligibility, regional restrictions, and paid listings can all apply. The safe standard is no required subscription or rental payment for the included free catalog.
How to install and start watching
- Open the App Store on your iPhone or iPad.
- Search for the exact official app name and verify the developer: Tubi, Inc.; Pluto.tv; ROKU INC; Plex Inc.; YouTube/Google; Kanopy; or Midwest Tape, LLC for Hoopla.
- Tap Get and authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or your Apple Account password.
- Open the app. Browse free content, create or sign into an optional account, or authenticate through your participating library or institution.
- Search for a movie and confirm that it is marked free, ad-supported, or available to borrow—not rental, purchase, premium, or unavailable in your region.
If a movie is unavailable
- Search for the title in another recommended app.
- Check whether the result is a trailer, clip, rental, purchase, or incomplete upload.
- Use the app’s Free, Watch Free, or ad-supported section instead of general search when available.
- Check regional restrictions and library borrowing limits.
- Do not use a VPN to evade licensing restrictions or switch to unofficial mirrors.
If playback fails
- Confirm that the device meets the app’s current iOS or iPadOS requirement. For example, the U.S. Tubi listing checked on August 16, 2026 required iOS/iPadOS 16 or later.
- Update the app and operating system.
- Try another title to determine whether the problem is specific to one movie.
- Switch between Wi-Fi and cellular data.
- Temporarily disable content blockers or DNS filters if they interfere with ad-supported playback.
- Sign out and back in if watchlists or progress fail to synchronize.
- For Kanopy or Hoopla, confirm that the library card or institutional login is active.
- For Roku remote or casting features, place the iPhone or iPad and Roku device on the same wireless network.
Are these apps legal and safe?
The recommended apps are established official services or platform-provided catalogs. Tubi explicitly describes its service as legal, and Pluto TV’s App Store listing makes a similar claim. That does not mean every item discoverable through a general search is authorized. YouTube in particular can contain unofficial uploads, so use clearly identified official listings.
Download apps from the official App Store, avoid sideloaded “free movie” packages, and be suspicious of services promising every new theatrical release at no cost. Such offers may involve unauthorized copies, aggressive tracking, malware, or deceptive payment flows.
What to expect from free movie apps
Free services generally focus on changing libraries of licensed catalog films, independent titles, documentaries, television movies, older releases, and live-channel programming. They should not be expected to provide the same newest releases or stable catalog as a paid rental store or subscription service.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Ad frequency also varies by title, region, and service. Tubi describes short ad breaks; Pluto TV, Roku, Plex, and many YouTube movies are also advertising-supported. Kanopy and Hoopla are the clearest choices for ad-free viewing when library access is available. There is no reliable basis for claiming that one ad-supported app always has the fewest interruptions without a dated, controlled comparison.
