These 57 films are a curated watchlist, not an official or definitive ranking. Each pairs meaningful action or physical peril with a quest, mission, journey, escape, pursuit, or exploration. The selection spans early swashbucklers, international action traditions, historical adventures, and modern franchise films; fantasy and science-fiction crossovers are included when the adventure engine is central.
“Action-adventure” is a useful overlap, not a universally fixed genre label. Rotten Tomatoes’ separate guides cover 60 adventure films and 140 action films, with different scopes—not an authoritative list of 57. The titles below are grouped by era and viewing style rather than ranked against one another.

What ties this watchlist together
The films do not share one visual style or even a single genre label. Their common thread is a story that moves through danger: a person or group must pursue a goal, cross hostile ground, escape a trap, or discover a way forward. Some rely on swordplay or practical stunt work; others build action through martial-arts choreography, vehicles, animation, visual effects, or the physical demands of an expedition.

The British Film Institute’s Art of Action feature highlights both stunt performers and actors’ physical work, as well as the changes computer-generated effects have brought to action cinema. A useful action-adventure list makes room for that craft in different forms rather than treating spectacle as a synonym for one kind of filmmaking.
