That shift creates room for striking atmosphere, suspense and a different kind of story—but it also leaves the season balancing horror, character drama and franchise expectations. Here are five choices that worked for me and five that did not.
Five things I loved about Alien: Earth
1. It makes Earth feel like part of the threat
The series’ central move is bringing the danger home rather than keeping it aboard a spacecraft or on a distant colony. FX’s official series framing describes a spaceship crash on Earth and a sister’s search for her brother amid an alien threat. That premise gives the familiar creature story a different scale: the setting itself can feel exposed to consequences that are no longer contained in deep space.
2. It has a distinct identity in the franchise
What I liked most about the reinvention is that it does not treat another Alien story as an excuse to simply repeat the same setup. The season’s new angle invites questions about the world beyond the creature and the immediate survival plot. That is a real strength when it feels like expansion; it is also a departure that may not satisfy someone looking primarily for a conventional, tightly focused Alien horror story.
3. The atmosphere gives the slow burn a purpose
The series can make anticipation part of the experience. In its stronger stretches, suspense comes from waiting for a threat to emerge and from considering what its presence means, not only from a sudden attack. The first-reviews roundup characterized the show as an atmospheric slow burn, a reaction that captures the appeal for me: the mood creates space for unease before the horror pays off. That approach works best when a scene’s buildup leads somewhere meaningful.

4. The character relationships give the premise an emotional anchor
The sister’s search for her brother gives the story a personal thread amid the larger threat. I appreciated having a human relationship to follow alongside the franchise’s creature horror and broader world-building. The cast was singled out for praise in Rotten Tomatoes’ collection of season reviews, though the value of any performance depends on how much a viewer connects with the character dynamics on screen.
5. The production gives the world texture
FX’s behind-the-scenes features cover production design, sets, locations in Thailand, costumes, makeup, stunts and effects. Those materials show how many crafts went into building the series’ world; they are not proof that every effect or action sequence lands. What I value is the ambition to make the setting feel built and inhabited rather than like a succession of generic backdrops.

Five things I hated about Alien: Earth
1. The early setup can feel like it takes too long to turn into payoff
The series asks viewers to spend time with its setup before the story fully shifts into its next gear. In the August 5, 2025 first-reviews roundup, some critics said the pivot from setup to payoff does not arrive until around episode four or five. I understand why that can frustrate a viewer: world-building only feels rewarding if the plot threads it establishes keep moving. If you want a brisk creature-horror story from the outset, the opening stretch may test your patience.
2. Choppy action cuts can blunt the impact
Action needs to be legible as well as intense. The same roundup reports that some reviewers found the editing of action sequences choppy enough to make them feel neutered. When a confrontation is broken up so abruptly that it is hard to follow the movement or appreciate the danger, the cuts can drain force from a moment that ought to feel immediate. That is a criticism of how certain sequences play, not a claim that every action scene fails.

3. The tonal choices will not work for everyone
Alien: Earth makes room for elements that some viewers found too childish for the kind of menace they expected. One review excerpt in Rotten Tomatoes’ season review collection makes that objection directly. I can see the problem when a lighter or more juvenile beat arrives beside material meant to sustain dread: the shift can make it harder to settle into the horror. For other viewers, that contrast may be part of the show’s identity.
4. Some needle drops can interrupt the score
The first-reviews roundup also points to episode endings that place modern rock or metal tracks against the score. That can be an expressive way to create contrast, but it can also pull attention away from a scene’s mood just when the music should be carrying it forward. For me, a needle drop has to feel like it belongs to the scene; otherwise, it lands as a reminder of the soundtrack rather than a natural extension of the drama.

5. Reinvention creates a payoff problem for franchise fans
The same freedom that gives the series a distinct identity can leave viewers wanting a different balance. If you come to Alien primarily for concentrated creature horror, a story that also invests in character drama and a broader world may feel like it is spending time away from the thing you came to see. If you welcome a new direction, those departures may feel like the point. The disagreement is less about whether reinvention is inherently good or bad than about which promise matters more: familiar horror, or a franchise story willing to change its shape.

The critical split makes more sense when you look at what each viewer values. Rotten Tomatoes’ series page showed a 94% positive critic score—111 fresh and 10 rotten reviews—in a snapshot accessed on October 4, 2026; the count and score can change over time, and an aggregator rating is not a measure of artistic quality. - Pacing and payoff: a slow build can deepen anticipation for one viewer and feel stalled to another.
- Horror versus character drama: viewers seeking sustained creature horror may be less patient with time spent on people and relationships.
- Familiarity versus reinvention: a new franchise identity can feel like welcome expansion or a departure from what makes Alien satisfying.
- Action clarity: edits that feel energetic to some can make a sequence harder for others to follow.
- Music and tone: contrasts in sound and mood can read as expressive or as interruptions to the tension.
