Grand Central Terminal is a memorable screen location, but a film showing its concourse is not necessarily a story set there. These five picks span classic suspense, science fiction, superhero adventure and fantasy drama; they are a curated shortlist, not an official ranking. The evidence also varies: some sources describe filming inside the terminal, while others record an association without establishing the precise scene or production circumstances.
How these films connect to Grand Central Terminal
Grand Central is a working rail terminal and a public destination, with the Main Concourse among its most recognizable spaces. That setting has given filmmakers a striking New York backdrop. The films below should be understood as movies reported to have been filmed there or associated with it—not as stories all set inside the terminal.
Five movies to watch
North by Northwest (1959): a classic thriller with a terminal appearance
Alfred Hitchcock’s mistaken-identity thriller is identified in a CUNY City Tech student report about films connected with Grand Central. The report supports describing the terminal as a location appearance; it does not establish that the whole story takes place there. CUNY City Tech’s report on films at Grand Central.
Seconds (1966): the strongest documented filming connection here
The same CUNY report says large portions of this psychological science-fiction film were filmed in Grand Central Terminal, including a view of the arrival and departure boards. Of these five picks, it has the clearest reported case for substantial on-location filming. CUNY City Tech’s report.

Superman (1978): a terminal association, with a caveat
The CUNY report associates Superman with Grand Central and describes a hideout as being beneath it. The student author explicitly expresses uncertainty about whether that area exists, so the hideout should not be treated as a verified terminal location. CUNY City Tech’s report.
The Fisher King (1991): a spectacular concourse image
Wallpaper reports that director Terry Gilliam staged 1,000 extras waltzing beneath the Main Concourse’s celestial ceiling. That production detail makes the film a standout for viewers drawn to Grand Central’s scale and visual character. Wallpaper’s coverage of A24’s New York locations guide.

Men in Black (1997): a recorded location association
Independent film-location databases list Men in Black in connection with Grand Central Terminal. The available records do not establish the precise scene or filming circumstances, so this is a less specifically documented connection than the reported filming in Seconds or The Fisher King. Movie Locations’ entry for Men in Black.
Which one should you choose?
| Film | What the cited source establishes | Viewing appeal |
|---|---|---|
| North by Northwest (1959) | Terminal appearance reported by a CUNY student site. | Classic mistaken-identity suspense. |
| Seconds (1966) | CUNY report says large portions were filmed in the terminal, including a view of the boards. | Psychological science fiction and the most substantial reported filming connection in this group. |
| Superman (1978) | Terminal association reported by CUNY; the described underground hideout is uncertain. | Superhero adventure. |
| The Fisher King (1991) | Wallpaper reports a large waltz staged beneath the concourse ceiling. | Fantasy drama with a striking terminal set piece. |
| Men in Black (1997) | Listed in independent location records; the precise scene and filming circumstances are not established here. | Contemporary science fiction. |
The evidence supports a varied watchlist, not a definitive ranking or a complete inventory of films associated with the terminal. A location appearance and a narrative setting are different claims; none of these citations, by itself, makes Grand Central the setting for an entire film.

For filmmakers
Commercial filming and professional equipment require a permit or location agreement under the terminal’s official policy. The page distinguishes small, self-contained shoots from more involved projects and says applications should arrive at least five business days before the requested date. It recommends allowing ten business days for permits and three weeks for more involved location agreements. Commercial use may also require separate intellectual-property licensing; contact MTA Filming & Events for project-specific requirements and check the current policy, fees and restrictions.
