These five films were scheduled to arrive on Netflix U.S. in September 2024, according to the original report. Each had a Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer score of 91% or higher at the time—not an audience score. They are licensed catalogue additions, not new Netflix productions, and their availability should not be assumed to continue in 2026.

One correction matters: Edge of Tomorrow was rated exactly 91%, so “91% or higher” is more accurate than “over 91%.”

September 2024 Netflix movie guide

Film Reported Netflix date Tomatometer Runtime Best for
Jaws September 1, 2024 97% 124 minutes Classic suspense
Midnight Run September 1, 2024 95% 126 minutes Crime comedy
Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit September 1, 2024 95% 85 minutes Family viewing
Edge of Tomorrow September 7, 2024 91% 113 minutes Science-fiction action
Grave of the Fireflies September 16, 2024 100% 89 minutes Serious wartime drama

The dates above come from the original TechRadar report published on August 28, 2024. Netflix release timing and catalogue rights can vary by country, account region, and licensing agreement.

1. Jaws — September 1

Tomatometer: 97%   Runtime: 124 minutes

Steven Spielberg’s Jaws follows a small-town sheriff, a marine biologist, and a professional fisherman as they hunt a great white shark threatening a seaside community. The central premise is simple, but the film’s controlled pacing, memorable characters, and carefully managed suspense helped establish the modern blockbuster.

Choose it if you want a landmark thriller that remains focused on tension and character rather than nonstop spectacle. Richard Dreyfuss, Roy Scheider, and Robert Shaw lead the cast.

Best for: Viewers in the mood for classic Hollywood suspense and a foundational creature thriller.

2. Midnight Run — September 1

Tomatometer: 95%   Runtime: 126 minutes

In Martin Brest’s Midnight Run, bounty hunter Jack Walsh must transport accountant Jonathan “The Duke” Mardukas across the country. The journey becomes increasingly complicated as criminals, law enforcement, and other bounty hunters pursue them.

The film works as both a road movie and an odd-couple comedy, with Robert De Niro and Charles Grodin supplying the friction at its center. Its crime plot gives the journey momentum, while the mismatched partnership provides much of the humor. Yaphet Kotto and John Ashton also feature.

Best for: Adults who want a character-driven mix of action, comedy, crime, and road-movie adventure.

3. Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit — September 1

Tomatometer: 95%   Runtime: 85 minutes

Nick Park’s feature-length Wallace and Gromit adventure follows the eccentric inventor Wallace and his intelligent dog Gromit as they investigate a giant rabbit threatening a village’s prized vegetable competition.

Its handmade stop-motion style, visual jokes, and compact runtime make it the most practical group-watch choice in this list. The film is accessible to families while still offering enough wordplay and detail for adult animation fans. Peter Sallis, Ralph Fiennes, Helena Bonham Carter, and Peter Kay provide the voices.

Best for: Families, animation enthusiasts, or anyone looking for an acclaimed film that fits comfortably into a weeknight.

This is the 2005 feature film, not a claim about later Wallace and Gromit releases or Netflix activity.

4. Edge of Tomorrow — September 7

Tomatometer: 91%   Runtime: 113 minutes

Doug Liman’s science-fiction action film stars Tom Cruise as a military officer caught in a repeating time loop during an alien invasion. Each cycle gives him another opportunity to understand the battlefield, improve his skills, and change the outcome.

The time-loop structure keeps the action moving while allowing the film to balance combat, humor, and problem-solving. Emily Blunt, Bill Paxton, and Brendan Gleeson also star. It is the strongest choice here for viewers who want a contemporary, energetic genre film rather than a slower classic.

Best for: Action and science-fiction fans who enjoy high-concept premises, repeated attempts, and fast pacing.

5. Grave of the Fireflies — September 16

Tomatometer: 100%   Runtime: 89 minutes

Isao Takahata’s animated wartime drama follows two siblings trying to survive in Japan after being orphaned during World War II. Its animation is beautiful, but the story is an unflinching portrait of civilian suffering, hunger, displacement, and grief.

The 100% Tomatometer score identifies the film’s exceptional critical reception; it does not mean that the film is light, universally comfortable, or suitable for casual family viewing. Despite being animated, it contains intensely distressing wartime and emotional material.

Best for: Viewers seeking serious, historically grounded animation and prepared for a devastating drama.

Which film should you watch first?

  • For the best all-round classic: Jaws.
  • For action and science fiction: Edge of Tomorrow.
  • For laughs and a road adventure: Midnight Run.
  • For family viewing: Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit.
  • For the most acclaimed but hardest watch: Grave of the Fireflies.

What “91% or higher” means

The percentages refer to Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer, which aggregates professional critics’ reviews. It is separate from the site’s audience-oriented Popcornmeter. A high Tomatometer score is a useful screening tool, not a guarantee that every viewer will enjoy a film.

Scores can change as Rotten Tomatoes adds or updates reviews, so these figures should be understood as a snapshot associated with the original September 2024 report. Genre, tone, runtime, age suitability, and emotional content matter just as much as the percentage.

Availability note

These were reported as movies scheduled for Netflix U.S. in September 2024. Netflix catalogues are territory-specific and change as licensing contracts expire or begin. The list therefore should not be presented as proof that all five films remain available on Netflix in September 2026. Netflix’s current movie slate is documented separately in its official Tudum guide.

They are also not “new Netflix movies” in the production sense. Jaws, Midnight Run, Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, Edge of Tomorrow, and Grave of the Fireflies are previously released films that were scheduled as new additions to the service.
