Looking for a must-watch documentary on HBO? These five picks cover animal trafficking, Burning Man, climate migration, a Kansas homicide investigation and the life of Deaf bodybuilder Shelley “Siren” Beattie. The selection is an editorial shortlist organized by subject and viewing mood—not an official HBO ranking.
Five HBO documentaries to consider
HBO’s documentary catalog describes each of these titles and marks them “AVAILABLE NOW.” That reflects the catalog at the time checked, October 8, 2026; HBO’s pages do not specify regional coverage, so check your local catalog before choosing. The catalog is descriptive rather than ranked, and these recommendations favor variety over a claim that they are an objectively settled top five.

The Welcome Table — climate migration and resilience
HBO describes this as a human-centered environmental story in which climate migrants across six continents share experiences of loss and resilience. See HBO’s documentary catalog.
A Killer Story — a long-running citizen investigation
A journalist follows two people seeking the truth behind a 2002 Kansas double homicide. HBO’s documentary-series catalog describes the case as spanning more than two decades, making this the pick for viewers drawn to extended true-crime investigations and citizen sleuths. See HBO’s documentary-series catalog.

Siren: The Voices of Shelley Beattie — a personal biography
HBO says this documentary chronicles the life and career of Deaf bodybuilder Shelley “Siren” Beattie, including her mental-health struggles. Choose it for an individual life story rather than a case- or issue-led investigation. See HBO’s documentary catalog.
How to choose your next watch
Start with the subject and tone you want: an unsettling trafficking investigation, a years-long view of Burning Man, stories of climate migration, a homicide case pursued by citizen sleuths, or one person’s biography. HBO’s catalog descriptions support those distinctions, but do not state runtimes or episode counts for all five titles; check the individual listing if viewing length matters.

What “best” means in this list
HBO does not identify these titles as an official top five or publish a ranking method on the cited catalog pages. This shortlist is an editorial selection of varied subjects and viewing moods, not a ranking based on awards or a comprehensive critic consensus. A reader discussion phrased the question as “Any must-watch documentaries on HBO?”—a useful way to frame the search, but not evidence for a title’s quality or availability: Reddit discussion.
