GTO Revival is a Japanese live-action television special that brought Takashi Sorimachi back as Eikichi Onizuka 26 years after the original 1998 drama. It first aired in Japan on April 1, 2024. The official program pages confirm the release details and cast, but do not provide a verified trailer link or upload date.
When did GTO Revival air?
The special’s initial Japanese broadcast was Monday, April 1, 2024, from 9:00 to 10:48 p.m. Japan time on the Kansai TV/Fuji TV network, with some regional exceptions. Kansai Television lists those details on its official program page. The revival was part of Kansai TV and Fuji TV’s 65th-anniversary programming and was promoted as the return of the 1998 drama after 26 years, according to the initial announcement.
Fuji TV’s FOD service announced exclusive unlimited streaming from 10:48 p.m. on April 1, immediately after the terrestrial broadcast. That announcement establishes the original Japanese streaming launch, not current availability or access in other countries. Check FOD’s current listings and regional access rules before expecting to watch it there.
Is there an official GTO Revival trailer?
The official program and announcement pages cited here do not identify a verified trailer URL or publication date. The title’s reference to a trailer should therefore not be treated as confirmation of a particular upload. To avoid unofficial clips or unrelated GTO videos, look for a trailer through Kansai Television or Fuji TV’s verified channels.

What is the special about?
Eikichi Onizuka, once again played by Takashi Sorimachi, joins a troubled high school and confronts students’ problems directly. The official synopsis brings the story into a contemporary school environment shaped by an anonymous exposé influencer, online harassment and suspicion among students and teachers. The special adapts Tohru Fujisawa’s GTO manga, published under Kodansha’s Shonen Magazine KC imprint.
Who is in the cast?
Sorimachi returns as Onizuka. The special pairs him with performers from the 1998 drama and a new generation of cast members.

Why did GTO return in 2024?
Sorimachi said he had received proposals to revive GTO several times, but believed there was meaning in bringing it back at that moment and reached out himself. In his original Japanese statement, he said: “実は、これまでにも何度か『GTO』やりませんか？というお話をいただいたりもしたのですが、今このタイミングで復活することに意味があると思い、今回は自分から声をかけさせていただきました。” The statement appears in Kansai Television’s announcement.

How does it relate to the original GTO?
The 2024 special is a one-off television revival of the 1998 drama, not the same release as the separate GTO series or rebroadcast context promoted by the broadcaster for 2026. The returning lead and actors connect it to the earlier drama, while its school setting and online-harassment premise place Onizuka in a newer social landscape.
For context on the original series’ popularity, Fuji TV and FOD cite Video Research figures of a 28.5% average household rating across the 1998 series in the Kanto region and 35.7% for its finale. Those numbers refer to the original series, not GTO Revival; the official sources cited here do not establish an audience rating for the 2024 special.
