Short answer: If you want music files that can be moved between Android apps, start with Jamendo, Free Music Archive, and Bandcamp’s free or name-your-price releases. SoundCloud offers files only when an artist enables downloads. Spotify and YouTube Music provide convenient offline listening, but their music downloads are subscription-bound app caches—not free MP3 or FLAC ownership.
That distinction matters: a downloadable audio file can normally be backed up and played in another music player, while an offline cache remains controlled by the service and account.

Spotify requires Premium for music downloads and a connection at least once every 30 days: Spotify’s offline guidance. YouTube Music likewise requires Premium for music downloads and 30-day reconnection: YouTube Music’s Android help.
1. Jamendo: best genuinely free download catalog
Jamendo’s Android listing describes more than 350,000 songs, free streaming and downloads, and Creative Commons releases: Jamendo’s Android listing. Its catalog is strongest for independent, electronic, ambient, instrumental, world and background music rather than current chart hits.

How to download on Android
- Install the official Jamendo app from Google Play.
- Search by artist, album, genre or track.
- Open the release and use its download control.
- Check the app’s downloads area or Android storage.
- Read the track’s license before using it outside personal listening.
Creative Commons is a family of licenses, not blanket permission. Jamendo’s separate commercial licensing terms show why commercial use must be checked rather than assumed: Jamendo’s licensing terms.
2. Free Music Archive: best for independent music and clear licensing
Free Music Archive presents original music and creators across rock, electronic, classical, hip-hop, jazz, folk, experimental and spoken-word categories: Free Music Archive. It is particularly useful for instrumental beds, documentaries, podcasts, student work and lesser-known artists.
Safer FMA workflow
- Open the official website and search by genre, artist or purpose.
- Open the individual track page.
- Read its license and attribution requirements.
- Use the official download control, if present.
- Save the file in Android’s
Downloadsfolder or move it toMusic. - Keep the required credit text in a note with the file.
A free download is not automatically royalty-free for advertisements, videos or other commercial work. Check whether the specific license permits commercial use, editing, redistribution and synchronization.

3. Bandcamp: best for artist-direct, DRM-free files
Bandcamp is not primarily free: most releases are paid, while some artists offer free or “name your price” downloads. It is the strongest option when you want to support an artist and receive files usable outside the Bandcamp app. Bandcamp documents downloads from checkout, receipts, Collection and Purchases pages: download locations. It states that downloaded audio is DRM-free: Bandcamp’s DRM explanation.
Android file workflow
- Open the Bandcamp app or website and choose a free, name-your-price or purchased release.
- Complete any checkout or claim step.
- Open the download link or the release in Collection.
- Select an available format such as MP3 or FLAC.
- If Android saves a ZIP archive, extract it with Files or another file manager.
- Move the audio into
Musicor another chosen folder. - Open the files in your preferred local music player.
Bandcamp also has in-app offline listening, but that cache is different from obtaining local files: Android local-file guidance and in-app offline guidance.
4. SoundCloud: creator-authorized downloads only
SoundCloud lets each uploader decide whether a track can be downloaded. A signed-in user can download an individual track from the web when the creator has enabled the button beneath the waveform: SoundCloud’s download instructions.

What works—and what does not
- Open SoundCloud in an Android browser and sign in.
- Find a track with an official download button.
- Tap it and save the file to
Downloads. - If there is no button, treat the track as streaming-only.
SoundCloud says direct track downloads are not available from a mobile device in the ordinary app. Go and Go+ subscribers can save content for offline playback inside the app, but that remains service-controlled; availability can also vary by territory: SoundCloud Go FAQs. Never replace a missing button with a stream-ripping website.
5. Spotify or YouTube Music: best for offline listening, not free files
Choose this category only if “download” means listening without a connection. Spotify Free does not download music. Premium downloads albums and playlists, not individual songs directly; a song must be added to a playlist. Spotify allows up to 10,000 downloaded tracks on each of up to five devices and requires online access at least every 30 days: Spotify limits and requirements. Spotify’s US page displayed $12.99 per month after a promotion ending July 6, 2026; prices and offers change: official US Premium page.

YouTube Music Premium downloads songs, albums and playlists in the Android app, and Smart Downloads can save recently played music. Downloads must be refreshed by reconnecting at least every 30 days. Podcasts may be downloadable without membership, but that does not provide free music files: YouTube Music download requirements.

These services store protected content inside the app. Do not expect Spotify or YouTube Music downloads to appear as ordinary MP3 files in Android’s Music folder.
How to play a legal music file on Android
- Download only from an official app, artist page or platform control.
- Find the file in
Downloads. - Extract a ZIP archive when necessary.
- Move MP3, FLAC or WAV files to
Music. - Open a local music player and refresh its library.
- If a track is missing, check the extension, folder permissions, storage space and whether an Android cleaner removed it.
Legal and licensing checklist
- Confirm that the artist, label or license explicitly authorizes downloading.
- Read the individual track license; Creative Commons may require attribution, prohibit commercial use, require ShareAlike or forbid derivatives.
- Ask whether your intended use is personal listening, a video, podcast, advertisement, business or public performance.
- Preserve attribution text when required.
- Do not redistribute copyrighted files, use YouTube-to-MP3 converters, torrent indexes, cracked APKs or stream-ripping tools.
Common problems and fixes
There is no download button
The creator or rights holder has not enabled a file download. Use another authorized release; do not rip the stream.
The file is inside a ZIP
Extract it with Android Files, then move the audio files to Music so a local player can scan them.

Downloads disappeared
Insufficient storage, cache-clearing or battery-saving utilities, a failing SD card, app reinstallation or device limits can remove service downloads. Spotify recommends at least 1 GB of free space for downloads: Spotify storage guidance. Bandcamp also advises against downloading when less than 1 GB is free: Bandcamp storage guidance.
Offline playback stopped
Spotify and YouTube Music require a connection at least every 30 days. A cancelled subscription, account change or territory restriction can also remove access.
Music does not appear in the player
Refresh the player’s library, verify that the archive was extracted, check file permissions and ensure the files are in a scanned folder.
