Complaints often appeared when HDR or Dolby Vision video started, including on Chromecast with Google TV and Sony Android TV sets. This was a historical app problem reported on July 19, 2021, not evidence of a new August 2026 outage.
What was affected
The problem involved the Apple TV app running on Android TV and Google TV hardware. Reports covered Chromecast with Google TV, newer Sony Android TV televisions and other Android TV devices. Failures generally appeared during video playback rather than being limited to sign-in or installation.
Contemporary coverage recorded a 2.2-star Google Play rating on July 19, 2021. That was a snapshot of the app’s condition at the time, not a current rating.
What users experienced
- The app crashed or froze while a title was loading or playing.
- Playback stopped or streaming failed intermittently.
- Some viewers saw image artifacting.
- Crashes were frequently associated with HDR, particularly Dolby Vision titles.
- The app could become unusable until it was restarted, or until the TV or streaming device was restarted.
Symptoms varied by device and user. The reports do not establish that every Android TV model was affected.

Was Dolby Vision proven to be the cause?
No. A lengthy Google Support discussion and user reports linked many failures to Dolby Vision or HDR playback, but no Apple engineering statement in the contemporary coverage confirmed a universal root cause. HDR is a broad category; Dolby Vision is one HDR format, alongside formats such as HDR10. The failure could have involved the app, Android TV’s media framework, device firmware, HDR negotiation, or the display and HDMI chain.
The July 2021 reporting therefore supports “crashes associated with HDR and Dolby Vision,” not “Dolby Vision caused every crash.” See the contemporary account at 9to5Google.

What Apple changed in July 2021

Apple did not publish a detailed changelog. The updates appeared aimed at the reported failures and offered a possible fix, but the available evidence does not verify that they solved every crash or HDR problem.
Workarounds people tried
- Install the newest Apple TV app update.
- Force HDR through the device or television settings.
- Turn HDR or Dolby Vision off.
- Restart the app, then restart or power-cycle the streaming device.
- Avoid Dolby Vision titles and use SDR playback.
Changing HDR behavior could bypass a crash for some users, but it reduced picture quality or defeated the purpose of HDR. It was a diagnostic or temporary workaround, not a dependable permanent repair.

How to install Apple TV today
Android TV
- From the home screen, choose Search.
- Search for Apple TV.
- Select the app and install it.
- Open it from the Apps area or Favorites and sign in with an Apple Account.
Google TV
- Use Search on the home screen, or open Apps and choose Search for apps.
- Search for Apple TV.
- Install and open the app from Your apps.
- Sign in with an Apple Account.
Apple’s current instructions are at Apple Support. Android TV and Google TV do not support purchases inside the app. Subscribe, buy or rent on another supported device, then sign in with the same Apple Account to watch on the television. Apple reiterated the purchase limitation in its February 19, 2026 support guidance: Get the Apple TV app on your smart TV or streaming device.
A safe troubleshooting sequence
- Update Apple TV through the television or streaming device’s app store.
- Install available Android TV or Google TV system updates.
- Close and reopen the app.
- Restart the TV or streaming device; perform a full power cycle if a normal restart fails.
- Play a non-HDR title. If SDR works while HDR fails, the format path is a useful diagnostic clue.
- Temporarily disable Dolby Vision or HDR, if the device exposes that control, and test again.
- Record the device model, system version, Apple TV app version, title, and active format such as SDR, HDR10 or Dolby Vision.
- Contact Apple or the device manufacturer if the failure remains reproducible.
Do not sideload random APKs, flash unofficial firmware or change service-menu settings to address a playback crash.

Check what your hardware can actually support
Apple says 4K, HDR and Dolby Vision availability depends on the exact device and display. Check the television or streamer model, system software, display capabilities, HDMI chain when an external device is used, and whether the particular title is offered in the format. Apple’s format guidance is at Find movies with 4K, HDR, Dolby Vision, or Dolby Atmos. Android implementations do not all provide identical HDR behavior.
A browser is a fallback, but Apple’s referenced support documentation limits compatible Android playback in Chrome, Firefox or Edge to up to 1080p, so it is not equivalent to a native 4K HDR app.

When an external streamer makes sense
Keep using the built-in app when SDR is stable, HDR works reliably, the device receives updates and you only need playback. Consider separate hardware when an old television no longer receives firmware, its app store lacks a maintained Apple TV app, or HDR switching repeatedly crashes.

Choose no new hardware if updates and an SDR/HDR test resolve the problem. An external streamer is more defensible when the television is old or the built-in platform repeatedly fails during HDR playback. Apple TV 4K is the natural Apple-centric choice; Google TV hardware preserves Google’s interface; Shield TV is primarily for broader power-user needs.
