4K Recording Software: StreamYard vs OBS

StreamYard records separate 4K participant files on eligible plans, while OBS gives you direct control over desktop recording output. Neither makes every 4K workload effortless.

For 4K local recordings of browser-based interviews, StreamYard offers separate participant files on eligible plans; for hands-on control over desktop recording settings, OBS is the more configurable option. Neither point means StreamYard broadcasts live in 4K: its current live-stream maximum is 1080p. OBS can be configured for 4K recording, but whether a particular computer can handle the workload depends on its encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. These are documented feature differences, not results of a comparative performance test.

StreamYard vs OBS for 4K recording

What you need StreamYard OBS
4K live broadcast No. StreamYard’s support article states that live streams top out at 1080p. Output can be configured in OBS, but actual 4K streaming depends on the platform, settings, and computer. The cited OBS documentation does not establish a platform-specific 4K streaming guarantee.
4K local recording 4K local participant recordings are available on eligible plans with local recording enabled and a 4K-capable camera and device. Cloud-mixed exports remain at the live stream resolution, up to 1080p. Recording output and rescaling can be configured. Practical performance depends on the encoder and workload.
Recording a browser interview Local recording can create separate files for participants. The studio resolution determines the main camera feed’s resolution. OBS records desktop scenes and sources. A remote-guest workflow requires additional setup beyond the recording controls covered here.
Control over recording output Uses studio resolution and plan-based feature access. Provides controls for format, quality, encoder, audio tracks, and output rescaling.
Main trade-off A guided browser-studio workflow, with plan, camera, device, and local-storage prerequisites. More direct control over capture and encoding, with more responsibility for setup and hardware capacity.

In short, consider StreamYard when you are recording a guest-based session and want individual participant files without building a desktop capture scene. Consider OBS when you need desktop sources, custom scenes, or direct control over recording parameters. This is a workflow distinction based on documented features, not a measured comparison of ease or speed.

What StreamYard’s 4K recording means

StreamYard’s 4K capability applies to local recordings made on participant devices, not to its live broadcasts. Each participant’s track is generated separately, and the local files are designed not to have their capture quality tied to the internet connection. The cloud-mixed recording, by contrast, stays at the stream resolution, up to 1080p. See StreamYard’s 4K recording documentation for the current limits.

Plan and equipment prerequisites

  • The 4K support article names Advanced, Teams, and Business as eligible plans. StreamYard’s current pricing page lists 4K (2160p) local recordings under Advanced, so check the live plan details before subscribing.
  • Enable local recording for the session, and use a camera or webcam and device that support 4K. The resolution of the main camera feed in the studio determines the recording resolution.
  • Local recordings use browser storage on participant devices and upload afterward. StreamYard recommends having 5 GB of available device storage for most users; this is an operational recommendation, not a promised file size.
  • Avoid private or incognito browser windows: temporary local data may not persist after the window closes.

StreamYard’s pricing page currently lists two hours per month of local recording on Free and 4K (2160p) local recordings on Advanced. The two-hour allowance is the Free plan’s stated monthly limit, not a general recording benchmark. Plan details can change, so confirm eligibility and limits on the current page.

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Before you record

  1. Confirm that the account plan supports 4K local recording and that local recording is enabled for the session.
  2. Check that the camera or webcam and the computer can capture 4K, and confirm that the studio’s main camera feed is set to the resolution you need.
  3. Make sure participants have enough available device storage and are not using a private or incognito window.
  4. Record a short test, then check the downloaded participant files and the cloud-mixed export separately. Do not assume that a 4K local track means the live stream or mixed file is 4K.

StreamYard’s local-recording guide includes bitrate recommendations for 1080p sessions. Those figures should not be treated as 4K encoding settings.

How to configure OBS for a 4K recording

OBS is a desktop application: its recording captures the scenes and sources you build locally. Its recording guide places the core controls under Settings > Output. Exact options depend on the selected output mode and encoder, so use the controls available in your installed version and test the complete setup before an important session.

  1. Set the canvas and recording resolution. Configure your intended canvas and recording output in OBS’s video and output settings. In Advanced output mode, the recording output can be rescaled while maintaining its aspect ratio. Confirm the resulting file’s resolution instead of assuming that a 4K canvas alone guarantees a 4K recording.
  2. Choose the recording path, format, quality, and encoder. Open Settings > Output and review the recording controls. Select a destination with adequate free space, a format appropriate to your editing workflow, a quality setting, and an encoder supported by your computer.
  3. Choose audio tracks if needed. Advanced output mode allows audio-track selection. Check that the sources you need are routed to the tracks you intend to keep.
  4. Record a representative test. Use the target resolution, frame rate, encoder, scenes, and sources. Check for dropped or uneven frames, audio problems, and whether the saved file plays and edits as expected. OBS warns that system compatibility does not guarantee that a particular recording workload will run successfully.
  5. Protect the recording from an interrupted shutdown. The OBS Project’s Standard Recording Output Guide recommends MKV because an ungraceful stop will not corrupt the entire file. OBS can remux a finished recording to MP4 using its built-in tool if your editing workflow requires MP4.
  6. Save separate configurations when useful. OBS profiles can store video and output settings; the OBS guide gives a 1080p-output profile and a 4K-output profile as an example. A profile helps organize configurations, but it does not reduce the hardware demands of 4K recording.

Do not treat a computer’s ability to open OBS as proof that it can record 4K smoothly. OBS says capability depends considerably on encoder, resolution, FPS, and scene complexity; quality settings other than “Same as stream” also consume additional computer resources. Its system requirements are not a performance guarantee for a particular project.

Which one should you choose?

  • Choose StreamYard if your main job is a browser-based interview or guest session and separate local participant recordings suit your editing process. Check the current plan, camera, device, and storage requirements first.
  • Choose OBS if the recording needs desktop capture, custom scenes, or direct control of format, encoder, quality, and scaling—and you are prepared to test your computer at the intended settings.
  • Do not choose based on the phrase “4K” alone. StreamYard’s 4K feature is for local participant files; its live and cloud-mixed output is limited to 1080p. OBS offers configurable recording output, not a guarantee that every computer or platform will manage 4K.

Copyright and publishing checks

Recording software does not grant rights to music, footage, or other material included in a recording. Before publishing or broadcasting, make sure you have the necessary rights or permissions for the material you use, and review the applicable platform rules. Separate participant tracks and higher resolution do not change those obligations.
