Randall Davey Audubon Center and Sanctuary is the anchor: it is a public 135-acre property a few miles from the Plaza, and the National Audubon Society reports more than 150 bird species there. Treat every species as a possibility rather than a promise, and verify hours, events, road conditions and closures shortly before you leave.
Your two-day plan at a glance
The itinerary below is deliberately modular. Santa Fe’s habitats change quickly with elevation, but access can change just as quickly with season, weather and maintenance. No precise driving or walking sequence between every stop is published, so use the sites as nearby choices rather than a timed route.
| Option | Habitat and elevation | Best use of time | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Randall Davey Audubon Center and Sanctuary | Foothills, gardens, trails | First stop, all-season anchor, or easy repeat | Public access is described, but current daily hours and closure text require confirmation |
| Santa Fe Canyon Preserve | Riparian habitat | Pair with a foothill morning for a different bird community | Conditions and trail suitability vary; check current access information |
| Adam Gabriel Armijo Park | Cottonwood bosque along the Rio Santa Fe | Local river-habitat alternative | The local Audubon chapter calls it the last accessible cottonwood bosque along the river |
| Hyde Park Road toward the Santa Fe Ski Basin | Montane forest and higher elevation | Second-day elevation option | Only choose it when road status and weather are suitable; some high-altitude roads close in winter |
| Las Vegas National Wildlife Refuge | Wetland and open-country habitat | Longer add-on for waterfowl, cranes, sparrows and raptors | Roughly an hour north of Santa Fe, so it is less efficient for a compact, town-based trip |
Where can I go birding near Santa Fe?
Randall Davey Audubon Center and Sanctuary
Start here if you want the greatest habitat variety without leaving the Santa Fe foothills. The public sanctuary covers 135 acres a few miles from the Plaza, with wildlife gardens, walking trails and a Nature Discovery Area. The National Audubon Society’s current page reports more than 150 bird species on the property. New Mexico Tourism highlights Spotted Towhee, Canyon Towhee, Hairy Woodpecker, Lesser Goldfinch and Black-headed Grosbeak among the birds visitors may encounter. It also describes hummingbirds, nuthatches, juncos, warblers, woodpeckers, jays and chickadees as typical groups.
Those names describe habitat-based possibilities, not a day-specific checklist. A quiet morning, flowering plants, water availability, migration timing and elevation can all change what is active. Walk slowly through the gardens before committing to a longer trail, and pause at edges where woodland meets open ground. If one section is quiet, changing habitat is usually more productive than simply walking faster.

“Visitors are welcome to birdwatch our wildlife gardens, hike on our trails, play in the Nature Discovery Area, or take a tour of the historic Davey house and studio, and more!”
Santa Fe Canyon Preserve
Use the preserve when you want a riparian counterpoint to the drier foothills. The local Audubon chapter identifies it as a place to look for river-associated birds. No fixed route, travel time or current trail conditions between the preserve and Randall Davey are published, so plan them as nearby options and allow flexibility rather than promising a minute-by-minute circuit.
Adam Gabriel Armijo Park
This park offers another river-habitat choice. The local Audubon chapter describes it as the last accessible cottonwood bosque along the Rio Santa Fe. Cottonwood corridors can feel very different from the open gardens and upland trails at Randall Davey, especially during migration. It is a useful substitute if you prefer a short local outing, if a preserve is temporarily unavailable, or if your group wants flatter terrain. Confirm current access and any park-specific rules before setting out.
Hyde Park Road and the Santa Fe Ski Basin
The road toward the Ski Basin adds montane habitat and a clear elevation contrast with the city. The local Audubon chapter identifies productive areas along Hyde Park Road and names Gray Jay and Blue Grouse among the montane possibilities. These are not guaranteed sightings, and the higher you go, the more weather and road conditions matter. The state tourism guidance warns that some high-altitude trail roads close in winter. A road that was open on a previous visit is not evidence that it will be open on yours.

Day 1: foothills first, then the river
Morning at Randall Davey
Arrive early enough to give the gardens and trails unhurried attention, but do not build your plan around an unverified opening time. The official Audubon page’s visible hours and closure text are inconsistent, while the local chapter describes regular hours for grounds, trails, restrooms and gardens and notes closures on holiday weekends and in January. Check the center directly close to departure.
Begin with a habitat scan: flowering or fruiting plants, shaded edges, open clearings and tree trunks with woodpecker activity. Record what you actually see rather than working from a target list. The reported species total is a measure of the sanctuary’s range over time, not a promise that 150 species are present during a single visit.
Midday riparian choice
After the foothills, choose Santa Fe Canyon Preserve or Adam Gabriel Armijo Park for a river-corridor session. The first gives you a preserve setting; the second gives you the cottonwood bosque along the Rio Santa Fe. Exact transfer times or a universal best order are not published, so let current traffic, parking, mobility needs and opening status decide which is practical.
Afternoon reset
Use the final part of Day 1 to revisit the habitat that produced the most activity, or remain at the sanctuary for a slower walk and nature-focused visit. A second pass can reveal birds that were quiet during the first circuit, but do not assume a repeat will produce the same species. Leave time to check the next day’s mountain forecast and road report.

Day 2: choose elevation or a reliable local repeat
Option A: a montane outing
Choose Hyde Park Road toward the Santa Fe Ski Basin only after checking weather and road status. The route is valuable because it changes the habitat profile, not because it guarantees a particular bird. Look for the montane species identified by the local chapter, including Gray Jay and Blue Grouse, while treating every encounter as conditional on season, elevation and daily activity.
Higher elevation can bring colder temperatures, wind, changing visibility and closures that are not obvious from town. Carry water, dress in layers and keep a turnaround point. If clouds build, roads become slick or access is restricted, do not force the mountain option simply to complete a checklist.
Option B: a second local morning
When the road is closed, weather is unsettled, or your group wants an easier day, return to Randall Davey, Santa Fe Canyon Preserve or Adam Gabriel Armijo Park. Repeating a site is not a consolation prize: different light and temperature can shift activity, and a local route reduces the risk that a long drive consumes the birding time. This option also suits visitors who need shorter walks or more predictable access, although trail and facility conditions still need confirmation.
If your second morning is Saturday
New Mexico Tourism says Randall Davey hosts free Saturday bird walks. The local chapter cautions that event plans and meeting details can change, so confirm the current time, meeting point and whether registration is needed before building your entire morning around the walk. A guided outing can help visitors learn habitat clues and local routes, but it does not guarantee sightings.

How the seasons change the experience
| Period | What the tourism guidance emphasizes | How to use it in planning |
|---|---|---|
| April–May | Spring migration | Expect the possibility of movement through foothill and riparian habitats; do not assign a named migrant to a fixed date |
| June–August | Mountain nesting | The Ski Basin option may be especially attractive when roads and weather permit, with activity still varying by elevation |
| September–October | Autumn migration | Keep both river and foothill stops in the plan so you can follow activity rather than a rigid route |
| Winter and other months | Access becomes the main variable at high elevation | Verify closures; a local sanctuary or river site may be the more dependable choice |
These are broad planning windows from New Mexico Tourism, not measured arrival or departure dates for individual species. Weather can compress or extend any seasonal pattern, and a particular weekend may feel unlike the general description.
Access, hours and road checks
Access information is the part of this trip most likely to change. Before leaving Santa Fe, verify three things directly: Randall Davey’s current hours and closures, the status of any Saturday walk or other event, and the road and weather situation for Hyde Park Road and the Ski Basin. The local chapter says the sanctuary closes on holiday weekends and in January. The official page and chapter information should be treated as current only after you check them close to your visit; as of 13 October 2026, they do not establish a future schedule.
Do not infer that all trails, restrooms, gardens and event facilities are available at the same time. Ask about the specific area you intend to use, especially if someone in your party needs a shorter or smoother route. For the mountain option, check both road opening and weather rather than relying on a general seasonal assumption.

- Binoculars: New Mexico Tourism lists them as a basic, but the local Audubon chapter says binoculars may be available to loan. You can therefore try the itinerary without buying a pair specifically for this trip.
- Field guide: A regional print or digital guide helps you compare similar towhees, jays, woodpeckers and sparrows without treating a quick glimpse as certain identification.
- Plenty of water: Carry enough for the walking you actually plan, with extra margin for a warmer or longer outing.
- Layers and sun protection: Foothills, river corridors and the Ski Basin can feel different on the same day. Add a hat, sun protection and a warm layer that can be removed as conditions change.
- Notebook or phone notes: Log habitat, time and behavior. A note such as “cottonwood edge, late morning” is more useful for your next visit than a vague list of hoped-for species.
Match the itinerary to your group
Visitors arrive with different transport, mobility and time constraints, and none of the available descriptions makes every stop suitable for every person. If you do not have a car, confirm the practical transport and return options for each site before committing to the mountain. If a companion prefers shorter walks, ask the sanctuary or preserve about current trail surfaces, grades, restrooms and places to pause. Keep the local option available so a change in energy, weather or road status does not end the day.

For photographers and serious listers, the same principle applies: build time around habitat rather than a guaranteed subject. For families, the Nature Discovery Area at Randall Davey gives children a non-checklist activity while adults watch gardens and trails. For a first-time birder, a Saturday walk can provide orientation if the event is confirmed; otherwise, a self-guided morning with patient observation works well.
Birding responsibly in a busy landscape
- Stay on designated trails and respect any posted closure.
- Keep voices low near gardens, nest areas and other birders.
- Do not crowd a bird for a photograph or treat a reported species as an obligation to chase.
- Leave plants, water features and natural materials undisturbed.
- Share only the location detail that is appropriate for the site, and follow instructions from staff or walk leaders.
These habits protect the habitats that make a two-day trip worthwhile and keep the experience welcoming for visitors who are not carrying binoculars.
A simple decision rule before you leave town
- Check access first. Confirm Randall Davey hours, holiday or January closures, and any Saturday event details.
- Check the mountain separately. Look up Hyde Park Road and Ski Basin road status and the forecast for the elevation, not just downtown Santa Fe.
- Choose your habitat goal. Pick foothills and gardens for a close-to-town start, a river bosque or preserve for riparian variety, or the Ski Basin for conditional montane habitat.
- Set a fallback. If high-elevation access fails, use another local preserve or the Randall Davey grounds rather than abandoning the morning.
- Pack for observation, not a guaranteed list. Bring binoculars if you have them, or ask about loaners, plus a field guide and plenty of water.
Las Vegas National Wildlife Refuge is worth considering only when you specifically want its waterfowl, cranes, sparrows and raptors and can spare roughly an hour of travel north. For a compact Santa Fe weekend, the foothill, river and conditional mountain choices keep more of your 48 hours in the habitats closest to town.
