In 2026, Apple TV is changing mainly through software and services—not through a confirmed new streaming box. The tvOS 26 redesign, household features, Apple Music Sing updates and expanded sports offerings affect different parts of the experience, and some require newer hardware or separate subscriptions.
Here, Apple TV 4K means the streaming device; tvOS is its operating system; the Apple TV app is where you browse and watch content; and Apple TV can also mean Apple’s subscription service. They are related, but buying the box does not automatically include every show, sports package or third-party service.
1. tvOS 26 gives Apple TV a more visual interface
Apple’s tvOS 26 redesign brings its Liquid Glass visual style to Apple TV, with translucent interface elements and updated controls. The Apple TV app puts more emphasis on large, cinematic poster art, so browsing feels more like scanning a wall of titles than reading a compact list. Playback controls and Control Center interactions are updated, too.

The change is about navigation and presentation, not a new display format or a promise that every title is available through one subscription. The Apple TV app can surface content from different services, but access still depends on where a title is offered and whether you have the required subscription, rental or purchase.

Who gets it: Apple identifies Apple TV 4K (2nd generation) and later as the baseline for the Liquid Glass experience. Older models may not show every visual effect or feature, even if they can install a tvOS update. Check Apple’s Apple TV user guide and tvOS 26 announcement for the model-specific details.
What it means in practice: Expect a more image-led interface, but not identical visuals across every Apple TV generation. A redesigned layout can also move familiar controls, so allow a little time to adjust.
2. Profiles and setup are meant to work better for households
Apple is making it easier to get to the right person’s Apple TV experience. With profile selection available when the device wakes, a household member can more quickly reach their own recommendations and Watchlist. Profiles also help keep Apple Music preferences and playlists associated with the right person.

There is also an Apple Account-linked app-login API intended to simplify signing in when setting up a new device. This is a capability app developers can adopt—not a switch that makes every streaming service sign in automatically. A service may still ask for a password, two-factor authentication, provider credentials or permission, and household or regional restrictions still apply. Apple’s tvOS 26 developer notes explain that app behavior depends on developer support.
Profiles are also not a guarantee of complete separation in every app. Each service controls its own accounts, profiles and parental or household settings. If several people share a device, review those settings in the relevant apps rather than assuming an Apple TV profile switch changes them all.
3. Apple TV gets more social—and remains a capable home-theater box
One of the most playful tvOS 26 additions is an Apple Music Sing feature that lets a compatible iPhone act as a microphone. The iPhone can send the singing voice to the television’s audio setup, while other participants can use their iPhones to join in, queue songs or send onscreen reactions. This is an Apple Music Sing feature, not a general-purpose Bluetooth microphone mode.

Compatibility matters: the iPhone, Apple TV generation, language and region can affect availability. Audio routing can vary with TV speakers, HomePod or AirPlay speakers, a soundbar or an HDMI-connected receiver. If the microphone experience is central to your plans, check Apple’s feature announcement and confirm that your devices and audio arrangement are supported.

The hardware story is otherwise familiar. Apple’s currently listed Apple TV 4K is the third-generation model with an A15 Bionic chip, 4K video, Dolby Vision, HDR10+ and Dolby Atmos support. Those formats also depend on the content, television and audio equipment in the signal chain; owning the box alone does not make every program play in every format. 4. Sports give Apple TV a bigger role in the living room
Apple’s U.S. sports offering is expanding. Apple says Formula 1 coverage begins for U.S. viewers in 2026, alongside its MLS matches and Friday Night Baseball. The sports may make Apple’s services more relevant to fans, but they are not simply features unlocked by purchasing Apple TV 4K hardware. What you can watch depends on the event’s rights, location, schedule and required subscription or provider.

There is also a more specific viewing feature: Apple Support says tvOS 26.4 adds Multiview in the Apple TV app on Apple TV 4K, allowing up to four live sporting events on screen. The stated support initially covers MLS Season Pass and Friday Night Baseball. This is not a universal four-window mode for any sports app or live channel. Check Apple’s tvOS update and Multiview support information for availability and supported services.
Before subscribing, distinguish the Apple TV device from the Apple TV subscription and from a sports package such as MLS Season Pass. The Apple TV service page describes current programming, but regional rights and subscription terms determine what is actually available to you. Formula 1’s cited 2026 availability is U.S.-specific; do not assume the same coverage elsewhere.
Which Apple TV owners should expect the changes?

Should you update, buy or wait?
Update if you already own a compatible Apple TV 4K and want the redesign, household profile options, Apple Music Sing features or supported sports Multiview. To check for an update, open Settings > System > Software Updates > Update Software. If one is available, choose Download and Install and keep the device connected to power while it completes. Menu wording can vary by software version and language; Apple’s support page lists release information.
Consider buying if you value Apple-device integration, a dedicated streaming interface, Apple’s sports services or the smart-home features of the current Apple TV 4K. Apple lists a 64GB Wi-Fi model and a 128GB Wi-Fi + Ethernet model; the Ethernet configuration also supports Thread. Wired networking, extra storage or Thread may matter to some households, while the Wi-Fi model may be enough for basic streaming on a reliable wireless network. Compare the current specifications against what you need.
Wait if you already have a recent Apple TV 4K and none of these changes solve a problem for you, if you only need basic streaming on a responsive smart TV, or if you are specifically waiting for new hardware. Apple’s cited product page still lists the third-generation model; that is not evidence that a new 2026 box is coming. Storefront price signals can also conflict, so confirm the live U.S. checkout price rather than relying on an old listing.
