If you liked War Machine for its military survival story and otherworldly threat, these four films offer different kinds of science-fiction action: an alien invasion, a devastating monster, futuristic combat, and a violent AI-powered revenge tale. Netflix availability varies by country, so check your local catalog before settling on a weekend pick.
What makes these films a fit for War Machine fans?
Netflix describes War Machine (2026) as a story in which an Army Ranger training mission becomes a fight for survival against an otherworldly killing machine. Its official logline reads: “During the final stage of US Army Ranger selection, an elite team’s training exercise turns into a fight for survival against an unimaginable threat.” (Netflix title page; Netflix Media Center)

The picks below are not all military-training stories. Two lean into large-scale threats and survival; the other two are adjacent choices for viewers who want futuristic action or technology-driven violence.
| Movie | Best for | Threat and scale | How it connects to War Machine |
|---|---|---|---|
| Independence Day (1996) | Invasion spectacle | Extraterrestrial attack on a global scale | Closest match for military action against an unknown threat |
| Godzilla Minus One (2023) | Monster danger with emotional stakes | Creature destruction against a wartime backdrop | Survival and military context, with a more human-centered story |
| Elysium (2013) | Action-first futuristic sci-fi | An individual challenges a powerful system | Advanced weaponry and sci-fi action, not Ranger training |
| Upgrade (2018) | Dark, hard-hitting techno-thriller | An AI implant enhances its user’s abilities | Technology-powered menace and action, at a smaller scale |
1. Independence Day (1996): for the biggest invasion spectacle
Choose Independence Day if the appeal of War Machine was the idea of people confronting an overwhelming extraterrestrial force. The threat here is an alien attack on Earth, and the response brings soldiers together with civilians and scientists. It expands the conflict from a unit’s fight for survival to a broad, destructive blockbuster spectacle.

2. Godzilla Minus One (2023): for monster peril and human consequences
Godzilla Minus One pairs a devastating creature threat with a wartime setting and a survivor carrying trauma. It is the strongest choice of the four if you want danger and survival to have emotional consequences, not just action beats. Its human-centered story gives the monster’s destruction a different weight from a conventional invasion spectacle.
3. Elysium (2013): for futuristic action and advanced weapons
For a more action-forward science-fiction pick, try Elysium. Its central conflict follows an individual taking on a powerful system, with futuristic technology and weaponry driving the action. It is a looser match to War Machine than the invasion or monster films: the connection is high-tech combat and a formidable threat, rather than military training or a unit’s survival story.

4. Upgrade (2018): for darker, technology-driven violence
Upgrade is the outlier if what you want is a giant threat or a military setting. This darker, more violent techno-thriller builds its revenge story around an AI implant that enhances its user’s abilities. Pick it for close-quarters action and unease about technology, rather than the scale of War Machine‘s otherworldly menace.
Want a more mainstream creature adventure?
Swap in Jurassic World (2015) if you would rather watch a creature loose among people than a darker techno-thriller. It offers survival action and a more familiar monster-adventure setup. Tom’s Guide included it among its Netflix recommendations alongside the four films above (Tom’s Guide, March 7, 2026).
