Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA Crunchyroll black screen can come from a browser extension, DRM permission, stale app data, an unsupported device, a network path, or a Crunchyroll-side incident. The quickest safe sequence is to test a private browser window, refresh the app or site data, compare another device or network, and then check Crunchyroll’s status page before escalating.
This guide applies when the Crunchyroll page or app loads but the video area stays black, with or without audio or playback controls. A completely blank page is a different symptom and is more likely to involve loading, cache, extensions, or connectivity.
Start with a two-minute diagnosis
- Play a second show or episode.
- Open Crunchyroll in an Incognito or Private window.
- Try another browser or a phone/tablet.
- Switch between home Wi-Fi and mobile data if possible.
- Check the official Crunchyroll status history.
These comparisons prevent unnecessary resets. If another browser works, the original browser is the likely source. If mobile data works but Wi-Fi does not, investigate the home network. If every title fails on several devices and networks, local changes are unlikely to solve it.
1. Disable extensions and repair browser DRM playback
Crunchyroll identifies ad blockers, pop-up and script blockers, privacy tools, VPNs, proxies, and other extensions as possible playback or DRM conflicts. Its browser guidance recommends private browsing, disabling blockers, switching browsers, and updating the browser (Crunchyroll browser troubleshooting).

Test privately, then isolate the conflict
- Open a new Incognito or Private window.
- Sign in and play the same episode.
- If it works, disable extensions in the normal window.
- Start with ad blockers, anti-tracking and script tools, VPN or proxy extensions, video-enhancement tools, and screen-recording or playback utilities.
- Re-enable extensions one at a time to identify the conflict.
- Update the browser and fully restart it.
Crunchyroll’s support pages currently show different browser baselines. One page lists Chrome, Firefox, and Edge 117 or newer and Safari 16.1 or newer; another lists Chrome, Firefox, and Edge 123 or newer and Safari 17.1 or newer. Rather than relying on one aging table, install the latest browser version and verify requirements on Crunchyroll’s supported-devices page.
Check protected-content playback
If you see a DRM message or a black player in a browser, make sure protected content is allowed. In Firefox, permit DRM-controlled content. In Chromium-based browsers, ensure the Widevine component is enabled and current. Update the browser and temporarily disable extensions, VPNs, and proxies. Crunchyroll’s DRM guidance is available at What do I do with a DRM Error?
Do not install unofficial DRM files, modify browser binaries, or use bypass tools. DRM is required for authorized playback.
Optional browser experiment
Some users report that changing hardware-acceleration settings alters black-screen behavior, but Crunchyroll’s current official guidance does not establish it as a primary cause. If you try it, toggle the setting, relaunch the browser completely, and restore the original value if nothing improves or performance worsens.

2. Clear corrupted cache, refresh the session, or reinstall
Cached files, cookies, stale sessions, and corrupted app data can prevent the player from loading correctly. Crunchyroll recommends clearing relevant data and reinstalling when necessary (loading troubleshooting).
Desktop browser
- Close the Crunchyroll tab.
- Delete Crunchyroll’s site data, or clear the browser cache and cookies.
- Restart the browser.
- Open Crunchyroll, sign in again, and test playback.
Targeted site-data deletion is preferable when available because a full cookie wipe can sign you out of unrelated sites.
Android
- Open Settings.
- Choose Apps, then Crunchyroll.
- Open Storage.
- Tap Clear cache.
- If needed, use Clear data and sign in again.
Labels vary by Android manufacturer and version. Clear data is more disruptive than Clear cache.
iPhone, iPad, TV, streaming device, or console
- Force-close Crunchyroll.
- Restart the device.
- Install available operating-system, firmware, and Crunchyroll updates.
- If the black screen remains, uninstall Crunchyroll.
- Restart once more.
- Reinstall it from the platform’s official store.
Reinstallation resets potentially corrupted files and obtains the latest app version, but it can remove local app data or offline downloads depending on the platform. Keep your login credentials available before clearing data or reinstalling. Crunchyroll’s broader playback instructions are at Basic troubleshooting for buffering, freezing, and other video-play issues.

3. Isolate the network, device, and platform
A comparison test often reveals more than repeated resets. Crunchyroll recommends trying another browser or device, switching Wi-Fi and mobile data, restarting the router, and lowering quality when the connection is unstable (loading guidance and playback guidance).
Interpret the comparison
| Result | Likely clue |
|---|---|
| Works in Private mode | Extension or stored site data |
| Works in another browser | Original browser settings, DRM, extensions, or compatibility |
| Works on mobile data but not Wi-Fi | Home network, filtering, router, DNS, or ISP path |
| Works on another device on the same Wi-Fi | Original device or app |
| Fails on every device and network | Account, service-side, regional, or platform issue |
| Only one episode fails | Title- or episode-specific delivery issue |
| App fails but browser works | App data, firmware, or device compatibility |
These are diagnostic clues, not guarantees. Test another title before resetting an entire device.
Network and support checks
- Restart the modem or router and wait for the connection to stabilize.
- Try another network before changing advanced settings.
- If video loads but stalls, temporarily lower playback quality.
- Confirm that the operating system, firmware, app, and browser meet the exact platform requirements on Crunchyroll’s supported-devices page.
Crunchyroll mentions OpenDNS or Google Public DNS as possibilities in its browser guidance, but DNS is an advanced last resort. It changes how a device or network resolves services and cannot repair app data, DRM permissions, an unsupported platform, or an outage. Record your original settings before changing them.
Useful edge cases
- Audio but no picture: Start with Private mode, another browser, DRM verification, and extension removal. Display-output, graphics, acceleration, or capture software can also be involved, but this symptom does not prove a graphics-driver fault.
- One show or episode only: Check another title. Regional availability, licensing, or an episode-specific delivery problem may be involved.
- VPN or proxy enabled: Disable it temporarily for diagnosis; Crunchyroll says these can interfere with DRM and regional access.
- Phone works but TV does not: Focus on TV firmware, supported-device requirements, app reinstall, and the TV’s network connection.
4. Check Crunchyroll’s status and contact support
Stop repeating local resets when the black screen appears on multiple devices and networks, every title fails, Private mode makes no difference, or the same error code persists. First review Crunchyroll’s official status page. A normal status display does not rule out an isolated playback problem, but a confirmed incident may make local troubleshooting ineffective.

Include actionable diagnostics
Crunchyroll support can investigate faster when you provide:
- Device type and operating-system version.
- Browser and version, or Crunchyroll app version.
- Country or region.
- Affected show and episode.
- Exact error code or message.
- Whether the problem affects one device or several.
- A screenshot.
- Tests already performed, including another browser, device, and network.
A useful report is: “Crunchyroll video is black on [device/platform]. It affects [one title/every title]. I tested [browser/app], [second device], and [Wi-Fi/mobile data]. I cleared site data, disabled extensions, updated the app/browser, and restarted the device. The exact error is [message], and it began on [date].”

Why is Crunchyroll audio playing while the video stays black?
That pattern can involve browser rendering, DRM, extensions, display output, or capture software. Test a Private window and another browser first, then disable extensions and verify protected-content playback.

Will clearing cache delete my Crunchyroll downloads?
Browser cache clearing does not remove browser downloads, but clearing app data or reinstalling can remove local app data and offline downloads depending on the platform. Keep your login details available.
Should I use a VPN to fix the black screen?
No. Crunchyroll says VPNs and proxies can interfere with DRM playback. Disable them temporarily while diagnosing the connection.
Why does only one episode show a black screen?
Test another title. A single episode may have a title-specific delivery, licensing, regional-availability, or cached-player issue rather than a device-wide fault.
The Bottom Line
Use the least disruptive tests first: Private mode and extension removal, then targeted cache or app repair, followed by another device or network. If the failure follows you everywhere, check Crunchyroll’s status and send support the exact platform, title, error, and tests you performed.
