No single documentary can explain the world. The most useful approach is to pair films that ask different questions: who holds power, how conflicts are experienced, why inequality persists, how evidence is produced, and which historical choices shaped the present. The 31 films below are organized as a viewing route rather than a ranking.
Official catalogs from PBS FRONTLINE, Netflix, BBC Select, THE WHY Foundation and the Media Education Foundation show that documentary coverage spans public affairs, war, climate, rights, health, science, history and media. Those catalogs change by territory and date. Nine titles below are specifically identified in those catalog descriptions; the other selections are editorial leads whose release details, current availability and film-specific claims should be checked before publication or classroom use.
How to use this list responsibly
Start with the question you want to investigate, not with the promise that a film is a complete account. A documentary is shaped by its director’s access, interview choices, archive and editing. Watch for what is documented directly, what is argued by participants, and what the film leaves outside its frame.
- Pair perspectives: Follow a film about institutions with one centered on people living through their consequences.
- Check the date: Political, technological and conflict reporting can become outdated quickly.
- Separate evidence from interpretation: A compelling sequence or interview is not automatically independent verification.
- Confirm access locally: Streaming rights, subtitles, audio description and educational licenses vary by country.
Power and democracy
The Edge of Democracy
This film offers a political-history lens on Brazil’s democratic crisis, moving between institutional conflict and the filmmaker’s personal experience. It can help viewers examine how impeachment, party politics and polarization feel from inside a country, but it is not a neutral history of every faction or period.

India: the Modi Question
BBC Select presents this series as an investigation of tensions between Narendra Modi and India’s Muslim minority. Treat its allegations and interviews as the documentary’s reported case; consult additional reporting for legal findings, political context and perspectives not included in the series.
Putin vs The West
BBC Select describes the film as examining Western leaders’ attempts to deal with Vladimir Putin and the path to the war in Ukraine. Its emphasis is on decision-makers and diplomacy, so pair it with reporting from civilians, Ukrainian sources and specialists on Russian domestic politics.
Inside Taiwan: Standing Up To China
This BBC Select report explores China–Taiwan tensions, possible conflict, and claims about disinformation and cyberattacks. Those claims should remain attributed to the film or its interviewees; the documentary cannot by itself establish the scale, authorship or strategic effect of every operation discussed.
13TH
Listed in Netflix’s documentary catalog, this film connects race, criminal justice and U.S. institutions through historical argument and contemporary examples. It is particularly useful for tracing policy narratives, while its thesis should be tested against court records, demographic research and accounts that emphasize different causes of incarceration.

Mariupol: The People’s Story
BBC Select describes this 2022 siege account as filmed and told by residents who experienced loss, survival and escape. The page reports a 2023 International Emmy, a 2022 Peabody and a 2023 IDA Documentary Award. Awards do not make it a complete military history, and current BBC Select access must be checked by country.
For Sama
Through a mother’s letters and footage from Aleppo, this film connects intimate family decisions with the Syrian uprising and siege. Its first-person urgency is its strength and its boundary: it represents one family and community rather than every political actor or the entire Syrian war.

The Act of Killing
This widely circulated investigation gives perpetrators of Indonesia’s 1965–66 mass killings space to recreate their actions. The disturbing performances reveal memory, impunity and political mythology; viewers should supplement them with survivor testimony and historical scholarship rather than treat reenactment as a literal record.
Restrepo
Embedded footage follows U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan’s Korengal Valley. The film conveys combat stress, routine and small-unit loyalty with unusual immediacy, but its military viewpoint leaves Afghan civilian experience, wider strategy and the war’s political causes comparatively limited.
Five Broken Cameras
Personal camera recordings document a Palestinian village’s protests against a separation barrier and the repeated destruction of equipment. The result is a grounded account of nonviolent resistance and family life, not a settlement of the broader Israeli–Palestinian legal and historical disputes.
Climate and the environment
An Inconvenient Truth
This presentation popularized a public case about human-driven climate change through graphics, scientific findings and political advocacy. It can clarify basic mechanisms and communication strategies, but emissions data, projections and policy options should be updated with current assessments.
Before the Flood
Leonardo DiCaprio travels to communities, scientists and policymakers to explain climate risks and proposed responses. Its global tour is useful for connecting causes and consequences; its celebrity-host format and chosen interviews mean it should be paired with local reporting and technical sources.
Fire of Love
Built from the footage of volcanologists Katia and Maurice Krafft, this film uses their partnership and fieldwork to make volcanic science accessible. It illuminates observation and risk, while the poetic structure is not a substitute for hazard maps, evacuation guidance or a complete history of volcanology.

Plastic China
By following families working in informal plastic recycling, the film links global consumption to labor, pollution and unequal exposure. It is strongest as a human-scale account of a waste economy; conditions and regulations change, so do not generalize its locations to every recycling system.
Inequality, race and human rights
I Am Not Your Negro
Using James Baldwin’s unfinished manuscript and archival material, the film examines race, violence and American political storytelling. Baldwin’s voice supplies a powerful interpretive framework, but the documentary is an essay rather than a comprehensive survey of Black political movements or present-day policy.
Crip Camp
This history of a summer camp and the disability-rights movement shows how relationships formed in youth helped drive organizing and federal civil-rights protections. It foregrounds activists’ memories and U.S. law; disabled people outside that movement and international disability politics receive less attention.
The Look of Silence
A sibling of The Act of Killing, this film follows an Indonesian optometrist confronting men implicated in the 1965–66 killings. Quiet encounters expose denial and fear from a survivor’s perspective, but the conversations are not a census of perpetrators, victims or national responsibility.

Human Flow
Ai Weiwei’s global survey of displacement visits camps, borders and transit routes. Its scale helps viewers see migration as a worldwide system involving war, poverty and policy, yet the montage cannot provide legal detail for every asylum system or represent every refugee experience.
Health and public systems
The Waiting Room
Set in a public hospital emergency department, this observational film shows how clinicians and patients navigate overcrowding, triage and unequal access. It makes system pressures tangible, but one institution and period cannot establish national performance or explain every health-policy choice.

Unrest
A patient-led account of myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome documents illness, stigma and the search for recognition. It centers lived experience and advocacy; viewers should consult current clinical guidance because diagnostic criteria and treatment evidence continue to develop.
Pandemic: How to Prevent an Outbreak
This series follows scientists and health workers preparing for infectious-disease threats. Its value lies in showing surveillance, vaccines and public-health logistics before a crisis; later events may change what was accurate, and no series can predict a specific outbreak’s course.
Science, technology and digital power
Apollo 11
Listed in Netflix’s science-and-nature catalog, this archival film reconstructs the 1969 lunar mission from launch preparation through landing and return. It excels at engineering detail and historical atmosphere, while giving less space to the social costs, geopolitical context and people excluded from the program’s story.
The Social Dilemma
Netflix lists this film among documentaries about technology and society. Former industry employees explain how platform design can shape attention, behavior and public debate. Their testimony is a starting point, not a complete causal account; newer research and platform changes may revise its examples.
AlphaGo
This film follows the match between an artificial-intelligence system and the champion Lee Sedol. It helps viewers understand machine learning through competition, uncertainty and human reaction, but a board-game milestone should not be mistaken for evidence that general intelligence or broad social benefits have arrived.
Particle Fever
Scientists at CERN prepare for the Large Hadron Collider’s first major results while debating what discoveries would mean. The film communicates how experiments, theory and collaboration interact; it is not a full primer on particle physics or a guarantee that every expectation shown was realized.

History and the choices behind the present
Shoah
Claude Lanzmann’s extensive interviews with survivors, witnesses and some perpetrators examine the Holocaust without relying on conventional archival narration. Its testimony is indispensable but demanding; it should be studied alongside documented chronology, Nazi records and scholarship on communities and sites not represented in the interviews.
The Fog of War
Robert McNamara reflects on decisions made during the Second World War, Vietnam and the Cuban missile crisis. His retrospective lessons illuminate bureaucratic reasoning and moral uncertainty, yet his account is self-interested memory and should be checked against contemporaneous records and other participants.
The Vietnam War
This long-form series assembles interviews and archival material to trace the conflict’s political and human consequences. Its breadth supports sustained study, but editorial selection still shapes the narrative; Vietnamese, Laotian and Cambodian perspectives deserve additional sources.
Media, information and accountability
Manufacturing Consent
Based on Edward Herman and Noam Chomsky’s model, the film asks how ownership, advertising, sourcing and political pressure influence news. It is useful for media-literacy questions, though its framework is contested and should be compared with reporting on newsroom practice, audience demand and independent media.
Collective
After a nightclub fire in Romania, journalists investigate why victims die from unsafe hospital treatment and trace the chain of institutional failure. The film demonstrates investigative methods and accountability; its findings concern a specific case and cannot automatically describe every health ministry or corruption pattern.
Navalny
This political thriller follows Alexei Navalny, his team and the investigation into his poisoning and opposition to the Kremlin. It offers access to one opposition movement and its security claims; viewers should consult independent legal, intelligence and Russian political reporting for corroboration and competing interpretations.
Building a viewing sequence
- Begin with one institution: Choose 13TH, The Waiting Room or Manufacturing Consent to see how rules and incentives affect people.
- Add a first-person account: Follow with Mariupol: The People’s Story, For Sama or Five Broken Cameras.
- Test the frame: Pair a film’s argument with scholarship, primary documents or reporting from a perspective it does not include.
- Update volatile subjects: Recheck access and context for technology, elections, war and public-health films before recommending them to others.
Used this way, the list is not a canon or a promise that 31 films can settle the world’s disputes. It is a set of questions: how power operates, whose evidence is heard, what systems conceal, and where viewers need more than one account.
