Conditions were severe by ordinary beach standards. ABC reported air temperature of 4°C shortly before sunrise and water temperature of 12°C. The Bureau of Meteorology’s apparent-temperature reading was -1°C. The Guardian reported a Hobart CBD low of 3.2°C before dawn and water of approximately 12°C.
Those figures describe different measurements and locations, so they should not be treated as one single official temperature reading. Together, however, they explain why the event’s organizers warn participants to take cold-water immersion seriously.
It was a swim, not a Spencer Tunick photoshoot
The most accurate description of the event is Dark Mofo’s Nude Solstice Swim, or a mass nude winter-solstice swim. Although the gathering produces striking photographs, the 2026 event was not a Spencer Tunick-style mass nude photography installation.
Tunick’s large-scale Australian photography projects—including the 2022 installation at Sydney’s Bondi Beach and a 2024 project in Brisbane—were separate events. Their participants were photographed as part of an art project. At Long Beach, the central activity was a collective swim staged as the finale of Dark Mofo.

Why do people do it?
For many participants, the appeal is the shared challenge of doing something uncomfortable and unusual at the darkest, coldest point of the year. Interviewees have described the swim as liberating, invigorating and communal.
ABC spoke with a 96-year-old Tasmanian who said she had participated every year. Other swimmers included a French participant returning after attending in 2025 and repeat visitors who treated the plunge as an annual pilgrimage.
The event’s atmosphere is therefore less about individual bravado than about synchronized participation: thousands of strangers assemble in the cold, wait together, and enter the water at the same moment.
A Dark Mofo tradition since 2013
The Nude Solstice Swim began in 2013 on a much smaller scale. Approximately 200 people had registered when the event was first proposed, and Tasmania Police initially objected, warning that participants could face public-indecency arrests.
Despite that early opposition, the swim became an annual Dark Mofo attraction. It now forms part of the festival’s recurring winter rituals, alongside programs involving art, music, fire and food.

Participation has grown substantially, although historical figures are not interchangeable with the 2026 registration total:
- 2013: about 200 people registered when the event was first proposed.
- 2022: ABC reported roughly 2,000 swimmers.
- 2024: ABC reported 3,000 participants.
- 2025: Surf Life Saving Tasmania reported almost 3,000 participants and said the event was incident-free, with support from 48 surf lifesavers.
- 2026: 3,000 people registered, exhausting the available allocation quickly.
The strongest confirmed figure for 2026 is the number registered. It should not automatically be interpreted as proof that every registrant entered the water.

Anyone considering a future swim should treat it as a cold-water event, not an ordinary beach outing. Dark Mofo’s official event information warns that immersion in very cold water may require medical advice. People with relevant health concerns should seek professional guidance before registering.
Practical preparation
- Wear warm layers while waiting, and have dry clothing ready for immediately afterward.
- Bring a towel and protect it from the damp sand and pre-dawn conditions.
- Choose sturdy, comfortable footwear: the event information warns about uneven ground, sand and low lighting.
- Follow the organizer’s instructions about entering and leaving the water.
- Do not assume that a short swim eliminates the risks of cold-water immersion.
A quick-dry microfiber beach towel can be a practical option for an event where participants need to carry their towel to the beach, stay warm before the plunge and dry off quickly afterward. It is not a substitute for warm post-swim clothing, medical advice or following the event’s safety arrangements.

The official event information lists accessible parking and says beach-access wheelchairs must be booked in advance through Surf Life Saving Tasmania. The Nude Solstice Swim has become one of Tasmania’s most recognizable winter rituals because it turns physical discomfort into a public celebration. The cold, darkness, fire and synchronized movement give the event a theatrical quality, but the basic experience is direct: people gather, remove their clothes, face the weather and enter the Derwent together.
