Who was Michael Newman?
Michael Newman was best known for playing Mike “Newmie” Newman on Baywatch, but his connection to the show was unusually close to the character he portrayed. Newman was an actual Los Angeles County lifeguard, not an actor hired to imitate one. He also worked as a firefighter while appearing on the long-running television series.
That professional background informed many of his appearances. Newman brought genuine rescue and water-safety experience to a show built around lifeguards, emergencies and beach culture. His role was fictionalized, but his practical knowledge was real.

Michael Newman’s Baywatch career
Newman first appeared in the Baywatch pilot in 1989. He initially worked as a recurring cast member before later joining the main cast. Accounts vary slightly depending on how related appearances are counted, but reputable reports place his total at approximately 150 episodes—more than any cast member other than David Hasselhoff.
Newman also reprised the role of Newmie in three episodes of the spinoff series Baywatch Nights. His other credited screen work included Welcome to Hollywood, Enemy Action and Baywatch: White Thunder at Glacier Bay.
For viewers who want to revisit his work, a Baywatch complete series DVD is one option to check, although edition, inventory and pricing can change. The available complete-series release has been listed as a U.S. remastered DVD covering seasons 1 through 9 and naming Newman among the cast.
He was a lifeguard and firefighter before and after television
Newman’s career did not begin or end with acting. His work on Baywatch took place alongside his real-world public-service career, including firefighting. After the series ended, he returned to firefighting and ultimately retired after approximately 25 years of service.
He also remained associated with lifeguarding, water safety and physical activity. That combination—television performer, working lifeguard and firefighter—made Newman different from most of the actors who appeared on the series.

Parkinson’s disease and his later advocacy
Newman was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2006, at age 50. He spoke about the diagnosis publicly during the promotion of After Baywatch: Moment in the Sun, a four-part 2024 Hulu docuseries examining the fame of Baywatch and its effect on people connected with the show.
Hulu described the series as featuring previously unseen home videos and intimate interviews. Newman’s participation gave viewers a chance to hear about his life after Baywatch, including the way Parkinson’s changed his priorities and influenced his desire to raise awareness.
Reporting on his documentary interviews said that the production worked with the Michael J. Fox Foundation and Cedars-Sinai on fundraising connected with Parkinson’s research. That was a documentary-related fundraising arrangement; it should not be read as evidence that Newman held an official position at either organization.
In an August 2024 interview, Newman said that sharing his story could help draw attention to the search for a cure. Those remarks were personal reflections about his experience, not a clinical account of Parkinson’s disease or medical advice.
