“Competence porn” is an informal label for the pleasure of watching skilled people tackle difficult problems through knowledge, practice, and teamwork. It is not an official genre, and people disagree about which titles qualify. The recommendations below focus on stories that make the work visible: the decisions, procedures, improvisation, and coordination that let capable people meet a challenge.
What “competence porn” means
The phrase describes an audience pleasure, not a formal category used to classify films or television. In Rachel Ayers’s account for Reactor, the appeal lies in seeing experts adapt, cooperate, and handle complicated situations. Sometimes the pleasure comes as much from watching the process as from seeing whether the plan succeeds.
A useful way to judge a title is to ask whether it shows people doing the work, rather than merely telling us they are brilliant. Do their skills shape decisions? Do we see procedures, specialized knowledge, or distinct roles working together? These are interpretive questions, not a strict checklist. A story can fit the appeal even if its characters do not win.
Movies and shows built around visible expertise
Medicine and emergency response
- The Pitt — A medical workplace drama and a particularly clear contemporary example: the satisfaction comes from watching professionals respond to demanding situations through applied expertise and coordinated work.
- Hijack — A crisis thriller structured around a capable specialist confronting successive problems. Its appeal is the unfolding effort to assess the situation and act, not simply the label of “smart” attached to its lead.
Science, engineering, and space
- Apollo 13 — A film about people applying technical knowledge and teamwork to an extraordinary challenge. The work of solving problems is central to the drama.
- Hidden Figures — A story of mathematical and scientific proficiency, including the expertise of women whose contributions have often been overlooked in familiar accounts of technical achievement.
- Gravity — A high-stakes space story that draws on characters’ training and practical decisions in an extreme environment.
- The Martian — A familiar recommendation for viewers who enjoy watching problems in space met with ingenuity. Whether it counts as “competence porn” is debated; the label is subjective, not a universal verdict.
Plans, teams, and strategic play
- Ocean’s Eleven — A caper whose team members bring different abilities to a shared plan. The pleasure lies partly in seeing specialized roles fit together.
- Leverage — A strong team example: a planner works with specialists whose distinct skill sets serve a coordinated operation.
- Ocean’s Eight — A caper that broadens the familiar team-of-specialists setup and puts women’s skills at the center of the plan.
- Survivor — An unscripted competition where strategy is part of the game. Its contestants develop and deploy social and tactical skills as the circumstances change.
- Moneyball — Named among the examples in Lifehacker’s June 14, 2024 article headline, though the full list could not be verified from the accessible page. It is a useful candidate for viewers drawn to analytical approaches to a familiar challenge.
Investigation, institutions, and everyday work
- The X-Files — Dana Scully’s scientific and investigative expertise offers a different model of competence from the lone action hero. It is also a reminder that skill can be expressed through skepticism, observation, and method.
- Parks and Recreation — Leslie Knope’s organizing and public-service work makes planning, persistence, and collaboration part of the show’s comic and emotional texture.
- The Great British Baking Show — An unscripted example in which careful technique and creative problem-solving are enjoyable to watch, even when the challenge is a bake rather than a life-or-death crisis.
Science fiction and collective labor
- Alien — Ellen Ripley’s judgment and practical response under pressure make her a standout example of competence that does not depend on the traditional cool, calm male-hero mold.
- Pluribus — Cited for sequences of coordinated, meticulous labor, including work carried out by an antagonistic collective. Competence can be compelling to watch even when the people displaying it are not heroes.
- Star Trek — Named among the examples visible in the Lifehacker article’s June 14, 2024 search result. The accessible result does not establish which specific series or films appeared in its full list.
- The Prestige — Also named in that search result. It is included here as a recommendation for viewers interested in skilled craft and elaborate planning, rather than as a claim that the full article’s treatment has been verified.
Competence does not guarantee success
A capable person can still be defeated by circumstances, institutions, or a problem that exceeds what anyone can control. A House of Dynamite is a contested example: its characters may be skilled, yet systemic failures can prevent their efforts from averting disaster. That tension is part of the appeal for some viewers. Watching people work well under pressure is not the same as being promised a triumphant ending.

Why representation changes the watchlist
Competence stories have often treated the capable protagonist as a “cool, calm” white man. In a 2018 essay for The Common Reader, Michaella A. Thornton asks readers to notice that pattern and consider whose expertise gets recognized. Her examples include Hidden Figures, Scully in The X-Files, Ripley in Alien, Leslie Knope in Parks and Recreation, and Ocean’s Eight.
These examples also show why the label need not mean a single kind of hero or work. Mathematical expertise, investigation, public-service organizing, survival decisions, and technical teamwork can all provide the pleasure of watching someone do a job well.

How to choose what to watch
- For visible procedures and teamwork: Try The Pitt, Apollo 13, or Leverage.
- For a clever plan and distinct specialties: Choose Ocean’s Eleven or Ocean’s Eight.
- For strategy in an unscripted setting: Try Survivor or The Great British Baking Show.
- For skilled women at the center: Consider Hidden Figures, Alien, The X-Files, Parks and Recreation, or Ocean’s Eight.
- For competence amid failure or uncertainty: Consider A House of Dynamite or The Martian, keeping in mind that viewers differ on whether either fits the label.
The Lifehacker piece dated June 14, 2024 is titled as a list of 30, and its accessible search result names Ocean’s Eleven, Moneyball, Star Trek, and The Prestige. The complete thirty-item selection cannot be confirmed from that result, so this watchlist is an independent set of recommendations rather than a reproduction of Lifehacker’s list.
