30 Indigenous Films from the NFB? Begin with These Verified Picks and the Official Collection

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you are looking for Indigenous films from the National Film Board of Canada, the most dependable starting point is the NFB’s Indigenous Cinema collection. It is an online catalogue of Indigenous-made work with browsing routes for films, directors and subjects. The NFB says its documentaries and animated films come from every region of Canada and are available free of charge, although access, subtitles and language options can vary by title and location.

A full list of 30 current titles cannot be verified from the available publication records alone. Rather than invent runtimes, languages or availability, this guide gives you four films documented in the NFB’s 2021–22 Film Club material, explains what makes each a useful entry point, and shows how to use the official collection to assemble a larger, current watchlist responsibly.

What the NFB’s Indigenous Cinema collection is

The Indigenous Cinema page is a discovery hub rather than a single genre shelf. Its navigation lets you move among films, directors and subjects, so a short animation can lead to a filmmaker’s other work or to films addressing related questions about land, memory, language or cultural continuity. Because the catalogue is maintained by the NFB, it is the right place to check whether a title is currently streamable, what subtitles are offered and whether a geographic restriction applies.

The NFB describes its role this way: “For more than 85 years, the National Film Board has been producing documentaries and animated films from every region of Canada and for all audiences—available free of charge.” That is a general statement about the collection. A specific film page remains the authority for present-day viewing conditions.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The scale of the collection has changed over time. In Visual Voices: A Festival of Canadian Aboriginal Film and Video, a 2006 NFB guide referred to “over four hundred titles” across documentary, drama and animation. That number belongs to the collection as described in 2006, not to a current catalogue count. The same guide discussed social justice, racism, land claims, cultural preservation, political self-determination, creative arts, oral tradition, land and cultural knowledge—useful signposts for exploring the collection without treating any one film as representative of every Indigenous nation.

Four documented films to put at the top of your list

The following metadata and descriptions come from the NFB Film Club 2021–22 program. Confirm each detail on the live NFB film page before planning a screening, because catalogue information and access can change.

Film Filmmaker Year Runtime Form and entry point
Now Is the Time Christopher Auchter 2019 16 minutes Documentary context on Haida art, ceremony and a landmark totem-pole raising
The Mountain of SGaana Christopher Auchter 2017 10 minutes Animation shaped by Haida visual language and a spirit-world rescue story
Shaman Echo Henoche 2017 5 minutes Animation based on a legend from Nain, Nunatsiavut, Labrador
Three Thousand Asinnajaq 2017 14 minutes Archive-inspired Inuit cinema connecting past, present and future

Now Is the Time — a ceremonial return to Haida carving

Christopher Auchter’s 16-minute 2019 film centers on Haida carver Robert Davidson and the raising of a totem pole in Old Massett in 1969. The event is not presented as an isolated art-world anecdote. The film’s subject opens a conversation about the public visibility of Haida carving, the role of ceremony and the way cultural practice can become a statement of continuity.

Auchter is identified by the NFB program as a Haida filmmaker. That authorship matters when you are deciding where to begin: the film is not an outside survey of Haida culture but a work made by a Haida director about a specific community history and artistic act. Its short length makes it practical for a first screening, while the 1969 setting gives viewers a concrete historical moment to discuss afterward.

Choose this film when you want documentary observation, a clearly located event and an introduction to the relationship among artist, community and cultural renewal. The program document supplies the 2019 date and 16-minute runtime; check the current title page for language and subtitle information.

The Mountain of SGaana — a Haida story told through animation

Also directed by Christopher Auchter, this 2017 animated film runs 10 minutes. The NFB program describes a young man taken to the spirit world and a young woman who sets out to rescue him. Its formal approach draws on Haida art, so the visual design is part of the storytelling rather than decoration added around a conventional plot.

The premise gives viewers an immediate narrative route into questions about transformation, obligation and the boundary between human and spirit realms. Because the film is brief, it works well as a companion to Now Is the Time: one title addresses a documented community event and the other uses animation to express a traditional story. Watching them together can help a group compare documentary and animated forms without ranking one as more authentic.

Use the live NFB page to verify current playback, original-language details and subtitle choices. The 10-minute runtime and 2017 date come from the 2021–22 program and should be treated as program-era metadata.

Shaman — a five-minute legend from Nunatsiavut

Echo Henoche’s Shaman is a 2017 animated film with a five-minute runtime. The NFB program calls it an animated telling of a legend shared by Henoche’s grandfather in Nain, Nunatsiavut, on Labrador’s North Coast. The program text says, “The short brings to life Henoche’s favourite legend, told to her by her grandfather in her home community of Nain, Nunatsiavut, on Labrador’s North Coast.” This is the program’s description of the film’s origin, not a quotation presented as Henoche’s own words.

Its brevity makes it a strong first choice for viewers who have limited time or who want to pair a film with a longer discussion. The family transmission described in the program also offers a precise way to talk about oral tradition: not as an abstract theme, but as knowledge carried between generations and transformed into animation by a contemporary filmmaker.

Look up the current NFB listing before showing it publicly. Language, subtitles and online availability are title-specific details and are not established by the older program document.

Three Thousand — Inuit time, memory and archival images

Inuk artist Asinnajaq made Three Thousand in 2017; the NFB Film Club lists its runtime as 14 minutes. The program describes it as archive-inspired cinema connecting Inuit past, present and future. That framing makes the film useful for viewers interested in how artists rework existing images rather than simply illustrating a chronological history.

Approach it as a work about time and perspective. “Archive-inspired” does not mean that every image should be read as neutral evidence; it signals an artistic arrangement of materials through an Inuit point of view. A post-screening conversation can ask what changes when archival material is recontextualized by an Inuit artist, and how the film links inherited memory to imagined futures.

As with the other examples, verify the current NFB page for access and captioning. The 2017 date and 14-minute runtime are documented in the 2021–22 Film Club guide.

How to find more Indigenous films on the NFB

Use the official collection as a catalogue, not a one-time list. This process helps you reach 30 films without relying on stale metadata or assuming that one filmmaker, nation or form stands for all Indigenous cinema.

  1. Open the collection page. Start at nfb.ca/indigenous-cinema. The page provides the collection’s own description and links for browsing films, directors and subjects.
  2. Pick a discovery route. Choose Films when you want to scan titles, Directors when you want to follow an individual artist, or Subjects when you are looking for a concern such as land, cultural preservation or creative arts.
  3. Record title-level facts from the current page. For each candidate, note the filmmaker, nation or community identification as stated by the NFB or filmmaker, form, year, runtime, original language, subtitle or caption options and present viewing status.
  4. Build variety deliberately. A useful 30-film watchlist can include documentary, animation and drama; different regions and nations; varied generations of filmmakers; and both short and feature-length works. Variety is a navigation aid, not a scorecard.
  5. Recheck before publishing or screening. Streaming rights, subtitles and geographic access can change. Keep the date you checked each title and link directly to its current NFB page.

Choose by the kind of viewing experience you want

For a short first session

Shaman is five minutes, The Mountain of SGaana is 10 and Three Thousand is 14. Their compact lengths make them suitable for a classroom opening, a library program or a personal introduction before moving to longer work.

For documentary engagement

Now Is the Time offers a specific historical event—the 1969 totem-pole raising in Old Massett—and a named artist, Robert Davidson. It is the clearest choice among the documented examples if you want to discuss documentary attention to ceremony and place.

For animation and visual storytelling

The Mountain of SGaana and Shaman demonstrate that animation can carry community-based stories, family-held knowledge and formal traditions. Compare their visual strategies rather than treating animation as a children’s category.

Historical context for the NFB’s Indigenous filmmaking work

The 2006 Visual Voices guide records that the NFB established Studio One in 1991 and that its successor, the Aboriginal Filmmaking Program, was established in 1996. These dates are historical context, not a description of a current program structure. They help explain why the NFB’s Indigenous film history includes both institutional support and a long range of documentary, dramatic and animated work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The same 2006 guide’s phrase “over four hundred titles” should be read with its publication date attached. It demonstrates the collection’s substantial scale at that time, but it cannot tell you how many titles are online now. Current discovery belongs on the NFB’s Indigenous Cinema page and on individual film pages.

How to use these films in a classroom or community program

Begin by naming the filmmaker, nation or community information supplied on the title page, and the film’s form. Avoid introducing a work as a lesson about “Indigenous culture” in the singular. Indigenous peoples in Canada have distinct languages, histories and artistic traditions, and the four documented films already show different perspectives: Haida documentary and animation, a Nunatsiavut family legend and Inuit archive-inspired cinema.

For a short program, screen two films with a deliberate contrast: pair Now Is the Time with The Mountain of SGaana to compare documentary and animation, or pair Shaman with Three Thousand to discuss family transmission and archival imagination. Ask viewers to describe formal choices, place and point of view before asking them to generalize about themes.

The NFB collection page also links to education and screening resources. If you are organizing a public or institutional showing, confirm the current terms, fees and rights for each specific title instead of assuming that online availability automatically grants screening permission.

Where to watch

Go to the NFB’s Indigenous Cinema collection and use its Films, Directors and Subjects navigation. The NFB says its films are available free of charge, but that statement is general; title pages are the place to confirm whether a particular film is playable in your region, what language and subtitle options are offered, and whether access has changed.

Because the evidence for a fixed 30-title selection is not current or complete, treat the four films above as verified entry points rather than a definitive ranking. Add further titles only after checking their live NFB pages, and preserve the filmmaker, community, form, year, runtime and access details attached to each film.
