Disney has not published an official ranking of 30 princesses and heroines. This is an editorial ranking, using character agency, growth, contribution to the story, cultural and historical context, and lasting audience recognition. “Disney Princess” is also a branded group, while “Disney heroines” includes female leads beyond that brand.
Who are the Disney Princesses and heroines?
Disney’s Princess brand is not the same thing as a complete roster of female heroes in Disney films and series. The company says it brought Ariel, Belle, Cinderella, Jasmine, Mulan, Pocahontas, Sleeping Beauty, and Snow White together under the Disney Princess marketing umbrella in 2000. That 2005 account documents the brand’s beginnings; it does not establish a current, exhaustive roster. The Walt Disney Company’s 2005 account.
Disney’s 2026 World Princess Week announcement refers to “all 13 Princesses” in a TikTok Search Easter Egg, but the passage does not name all thirteen, and it offers no ranking. Disney describes the brand as celebrating “the most magical stories and the relatable, empowered heroines at the heart of those stories.” That is the company’s framing, not a scorecard for comparing characters. Disney’s 2026 World Princess Week announcement.
This list therefore takes “princesses and heroines” broadly. It includes branded Princess characters alongside other female leads whose choices drive Disney stories. The order is a critical judgment, not an official Disney list or an objective measurement.

How this ranking works
Each placement weighs five story-focused considerations:
- Agency: How much the character’s decisions shape what happens?
- Growth: Does the character change, learn, or deepen her understanding over the story?
- Narrative contribution: Is she central to the story’s conflict and resolution?
- Context: How does the character’s story engage with its cultural or historical setting?
- Recognition: Has the character remained a recognizable part of Disney storytelling for audiences?
These are comparative editorial criteria, not a formula. Royal title, product visibility, and marketing prominence do not automatically make a character better written or more important.
The 30 Disney princesses and heroines, ranked
1. Mulan
Mulan’s defining strength is decisive action under extraordinary pressure. She takes her father’s place in the army, adapts to a world designed to exclude her, and ultimately changes the course of the conflict through her judgment and courage. Her story gives agency and consequence equal weight.
2. Moana
Moana’s journey is both personal and communal: she accepts responsibility for her island and becomes a skilled wayfinder through persistence, learning, and collaboration. Disney itself describes her as an adventurous wayfinder, but her placement here rests on the story’s sustained focus on her choices and growth.

Tiana’s ambition is unusually concrete: she works toward opening a restaurant and must reconsider what success and partnership mean along the way. Her determination propels the plot, while her growth comes from balancing a hard-won dream with the people around her.
4. Belle
Belle’s curiosity and willingness to judge people for themselves make her more than a romantic lead. She resists a narrow life, intervenes when her father is in danger, and helps transform the story’s central relationship without surrendering her independence.
5. Rapunzel
Rapunzel begins with a world carefully restricted by someone else, then takes an active role in discovering what lies beyond it. Her curiosity, courage, and growing ability to make decisions give the adventure its emotional momentum.
6. Elsa
Elsa’s story centers on fear, responsibility, and self-acceptance rather than a search for romance. Her struggle shapes the kingdom’s crisis, and her eventual choices turn a private conflict into a story about care, family, and the cost of isolation.

Anna’s optimism is not simply a personality trait: it fuels her repeated efforts to reach her sister and repair their relationship. She is impulsive and imperfect, but her loyalty and courage are essential to the resolution.
8. Pocahontas
Pocahontas is written as a mediator who questions inherited assumptions and tries to prevent violence. The story’s historical framing is highly romanticized, so her cultural and historical context deserves scrutiny as well as recognition of her role within the film.
9. Cinderella
Cinderella’s kindness and hope persist under conditions designed to diminish her. She is less involved in changing the surrounding system than many characters above her, but her resilience and enduring place in Disney storytelling make her one of the brand’s most recognizable heroines. Disney’s 2026 brand release also describes her as optimistic and kind.
10. Ariel
Ariel’s curiosity about the human world drives the story from its opening choices onward. Her determination is compelling, though the consequences of her bargain complicate how freely she can pursue what she wants.

11. Jasmine
Jasmine challenges the assumption that her future should be decided for her. Her resistance to a political marriage and her willingness to act beyond palace walls give her a clear stake in the story’s power dynamics.
12. Snow White
Snow White is a foundational Disney heroine whose warmth and resourcefulness help her find safety and community. Her story gives her less control over the central conflict than later heroines, but her cultural recognition is immense.
13. Raya
Raya’s journey is shaped by betrayal, grief, and the difficult work of rebuilding trust. She takes responsibility for seeking a way to reunite a divided land, and her story asks whether trust can be chosen before it feels safe.
14. Kida
Kida is a leader whose knowledge of her people and their threatened home is central to the story. She is not merely a guide for an outsider: her authority and choices matter to whether her civilization survives.

15. Megara
Megara’s sharp humor masks a history of hurt, but her arc gives her room to choose vulnerability and loyalty on her own terms. She adds emotional complexity to a story that might otherwise rely on a simpler romantic template.
16. Esmeralda
Esmeralda acts with compassion and conviction in the face of persecution. Her courage is public and political: she protects people targeted by those with power and refuses to accept injustice as inevitable.
17. Jane Porter
Jane’s curiosity and willingness to revise her assumptions make her an active participant in the story rather than a passive visitor. Her scientific interests and growing relationship with Tarzan give her a distinct perspective on the worlds they inhabit.
18. Lilo
Lilo is a child heroine whose individuality, grief, and stubborn loyalty shape the emotional center of her story. Her bond with Stitch is part of a wider story about family and belonging, and her distinctive point of view gives the film much of its force.
19. Vanellope von Schweetz
Vanellope refuses to accept that a label or glitch should decide what she can become. Her wit and persistence drive her pursuit of agency in a world with rules written by others.
20. Judy Hopps
Judy’s determination to become a police officer puts her in conflict with assumptions about who belongs in the job. Her growth depends on recognizing her own blind spots as well as proving her ability.
21. Mirabel Madrigal
Mirabel’s importance comes from seeing the emotional strain her family has learned to hide. She investigates what is wrong and helps bring the family’s relationships into the open, even without the magical gift that defines her relatives.
22. Asha
Asha’s concern for her community becomes a direct challenge to a ruler who controls people’s hopes. Her story puts collective responsibility and the right to imagine a future at its center.

23. Elena of Avalor
Elena’s story is explicitly about learning to rule, not simply inheriting a title. Disney’s 2016 description presents her as a princess, sister, granddaughter, and loyal friend who learns with help from a council; it also quoted then-Disney Junior executive Nancy Kanter calling her the first princess who would actually rule her kingdom. That is a description of the series at the time, not a claim about every Disney princess. Disney’s July 2016 description of Elena of Avalor.
24. Kida’s fellow Atlantis heroine, Audrey Ramirez
Audrey’s mechanical skill and practical resolve make her one of the expedition’s most capable members. She contributes to the group’s survival through expertise rather than royal status, demonstrating why a list of Disney heroines should reach beyond the Princess brand.
25. Nani Pelekai
Nani’s story is about the pressure of caring for a younger sister while trying to keep their family together. Her imperfect decisions feel grounded in that responsibility, and her fierce commitment to Lilo gives the film its human stakes.
26. Eilonwy
Eilonwy brings nerve, intelligence, and a willingness to challenge the boys around her. She is a less prominent figure in Disney’s modern brand conversation, but her resourcefulness earns her a place among the studio’s earlier fantasy heroines.

27. Maid Marian
Maid Marian is a poised, compassionate presence in a story led largely by Robin Hood. Her role is less active than those of the heroines above, but she remains an important female character in Disney’s animated retelling.
28. Giselle
Giselle’s fairytale expectations meet the complications of modern life, allowing her to grow beyond the storybook role she first imagines for herself. Her changing understanding of love gives the character more dimension than a simple fish-out-of-water premise.
29. Wendy Darling
Wendy is a thoughtful storyteller and caretaker whose perspective adds tenderness to the adventure. She is not the principal driver of its conflict, but her choices reflect the film’s tension between childhood freedom and growing up.
30. Alice
Alice’s curiosity carries her through a dreamlike world whose rules keep shifting. Her adventure is more about observation and imagination than a conventional heroic transformation, but that unusual perspective is precisely what makes her memorable.

Disney’s public descriptions emphasize themes such as courage, compassion, confidence, creativity, and possibility. Those themes help explain what the brand wants to celebrate; they do not establish an official hierarchy among characters. In 2026, Disney announced World Princess Week programming that included a short film, a concert celebration, Disney+ programming, retail activity, books, and live experiences. The announcement’s “all 13 Princesses” reference concerns a TikTok activation, not an official ranking or a complete list for this article. Read Disney’s announcement.
Disney has also described the brand’s commercial history. In a 2005 company release, it projected $3 billion in worldwide consumer-products retail sales for that year, reported 40% growth in 2005 and 300% growth over the preceding three years, and said 30 magazine editions circulated in 75 countries with a worldwide circulation of 10 million. These are historical company-reported figures, not current sales or evidence that one character is artistically superior to another. The 2005 company release.
What makes a Disney heroine worth ranking?
A strong heroine need not be a queen, a princess, or the most powerful person in her story. The more useful questions are whether she makes consequential choices, whether the story gives those choices meaning, and whether her perspective adds something distinctive. Some characters here are celebrated for changing events directly; others matter because they reveal a family’s tensions, resist unjust expectations, or embody a lasting storytelling tradition.
That distinction is why the list includes both Disney Princess-branded figures and heroines outside the brand. Disney’s own 2026 description emphasizes relatable, empowered heroines, while its 2005 history shows that the Princess identity also developed as a marketing grouping. The two categories overlap, but they are not interchangeable.
