Its most sensitive departure is a childhood flashback that implies his uncle Robert abused him. Reporting cited about Hernandez’s own disclosure says he was molested as a child but does not identify the abuser, so the episode’s implication should not be treated as established fact.

The official FX episode promo frames the story around Aaron preparing for the NFL Draft while secrets threaten his prospects. That is the episode’s dramatic setup; it should not be read as a verified record of every conversation or event shown.
Does the episode prove Aaron was abused by his uncle?
No. The episode opens with a childhood scene in which uncle Robert leaves Aaron’s locked room and says he was giving him birthday money. A recap of the episode reads the scene as implying sexual abuse. That implication belongs to the show.

The same recap reports that Hernandez told attorneys and others he had been molested as a child, but the cited reporting does not identify the abuser. It therefore does not establish that his uncle Robert abused him. Because this detail rests on a secondary episode recap rather than a primary document or direct statement identifying an abuser, the responsible distinction is between what the scene suggests and what the available account establishes. Show Snob’s October 1, 2024 recap discusses the scene and the implication.
Where the draft storyline meets the historical record
The episode’s broad focus on draft pressure can be compared with Hernandez’s actual draft result. The New England Patriots selected him 113th overall in the fourth round of the 2010 NFL Draft. Deseret News’ retrospective account gives that draft position.

That known outcome does not independently verify dialogue, expectations, or specific draft-day scenes depicted in the episode. The evidence supports the actual selection and the show’s general framing of pre-draft stakes, not a scene-by-scene audit of the script.

American Sports Story: Aaron Hernandez draws on Boston Globe Spotlight Team reporting and the Wondery podcast Gladiator: Aaron Hernandez and Football Inc., but it is a scripted adaptation. Boston Globe journalist Patricia Wen, who visited the production and had edited the Spotlight Team investigation, said: “I knew these writers had the right to invent dialogue, make up scenes, and create composite characters.” She also reported that the Globe consulted with the production at times but did not participate in the final scripts. Wen’s September 4, 2024 article in The Boston Globe describes that relationship.

That creative latitude matters most when a scene appears to assign responsibility for a serious act to a real person. Viewers can identify what the series implies, but should not convert that implication into a factual accusation without independent evidence.
