28 Years Later Is Streaming on Netflix—But Doctor Sleep Is the Shining Adaptation Stephen King Approved

“28 Years Later, the Only ‘Shining’ Adaptation Stephen King Enjoyed Is Finally Available To Stream” combines two separate facts: 28 Years Later is listed on Netflix in the US, while the Stephen King-approved Shining adaptation is Doctor Sleep, Mike Flanagan’s 2019 film—not a film connected to the Rage-virus series.

28 Years Later is the latest Danny Boyle and Alex Garland entry in the 28 Days Later universe. Netflix’s US listing describes an R-rated horror film set nearly 30 years after the Rage virus ravaged England, when a father and son leave a remote island for a dangerous hunting mission.

Key takeaways

  • 28 Years Later is a 2025 R-rated horror film directed by Danny Boyle and written by Alex Garland, set in the 28 Days Later universe.
  • 28 Years Later is listed on Netflix in the United States, while a July 29, 2026 JustWatch check also identified digital rental and purchase options.
  • The Stephen King connection belongs to Doctor Sleep, Mike Flanagan’s 2019 adaptation of King’s sequel novel to The Shining.
  • Stephen King approved of Doctor Sleep because the film connected his novel to Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 movie without abandoning the emotional qualities King wanted from the story.
  • The phrase “the only Shining adaptation Stephen King enjoyed” is too absolute: available reporting establishes King’s strong approval of Doctor Sleep, but also records his positive view of Carrie.

What is the connection between 28 Years Later and Stephen King?

28 Years Later has no Stephen King authorship connection. The film is Danny Boyle and Alex Garland’s continuation of the 28 Days Later horror universe, whereas the Stephen King reference points to Doctor Sleep, Mike Flanagan’s adaptation of King’s sequel to The Shining.

Sony describes 28 Years Later as a new story in the 28 Days Later world. Netflix’s US title page identifies the film as a 2025 R-rated horror movie in which a father and son leave a remote island nearly 30 years after the Rage virus devastated England. The two films have been placed together because of their shared appeal to horror viewers—not because they share a creator, fictional universe, or source novel.

Is 28 Years Later streaming on Netflix in the US?

Yes. Netflix’s US catalog lists 28 Years Later. The listing is the clearest current US subscription-streaming evidence in the supplied research, although streaming catalogs and regional rights can change. Check the official Netflix title page for 28 Years Later if the film does not appear in a Netflix search.

A JustWatch US availability check performed on July 29, 2026 also reported rental and purchase options through Amazon Video, the Apple TV Store, and Fandango At Home. Those storefront listings are transactional alternatives, not evidence that the film is included with every subscription service.

Which Stephen King adaptation did he famously approve?

The film is Doctor Sleep, released in 2019 and directed by Mike Flanagan. The movie adapts King’s 2013 sequel novel, following an adult Danny Torrance as he confronts the trauma and supernatural legacy of The Shining. The story also continues the visual and narrative continuity of Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 film.

That balancing act mattered because King’s novel and Kubrick’s movie take noticeably different approaches to the material. King has repeatedly expressed dissatisfaction with Kubrick’s interpretation of The Shining, while Flanagan’s film had to respect the audience’s familiarity with Kubrick’s imagery and still function as an adaptation of King’s book.

In a 2019 TIME interview, Stephen King described Flanagan’s achievement as a “seamless weld” between the novel sequel and Kubrick’s film. King also said that Flanagan warmed up what he viewed as Kubrick’s emotionally cold treatment of the material. That is the basis for calling Doctor Sleep the Shining-related adaptation that earned King’s approval.

Why did Stephen King like Doctor Sleep?

King liked Doctor Sleep because it connected two versions of The Shining while restoring more of the human emotion he wanted from the story. Flanagan did not simply ignore Kubrick’s film or reproduce it scene for scene. Instead, the movie uses recognizable elements from Kubrick’s visual continuity while adapting King’s concerns with addiction, recovery, family, grief, and inherited trauma.

The film therefore operates in two continuities at once:

  • King’s literary continuity: Doctor Sleep continues the characters and themes of King’s sequel novel.
  • Kubrick’s film continuity: the movie acknowledges the 1980 adaptation that most mainstream viewers know, including its version of the Overlook Hotel.

Netflix Tudum reported that Flanagan screened the finished movie for King and sat beside him anxiously during the viewing. Flanagan’s account, published in Netflix Tudum’s interview coverage, describes his relief when King responded positively. The account is useful context, but it should not be presented as a first-hand viewing experience by this article.

Was Doctor Sleep really the only Stephen King adaptation he enjoyed?

No reliable version of that claim should be stated without qualification. Doctor Sleep is the Stephen King adaptation most clearly associated with his approval of a Shining continuation, and King strongly disliked Kubrick’s The Shining. However, reporting also records King’s positive view of Brian De Palma’s Carrie.

The distinction matters. “The only Shining adaptation Stephen King enjoyed” can reasonably describe the unusual situation surrounding Doctor Sleep if the wording means the only sequel or Shining-related film he famously approved. “The only Stephen King adaptation he ever enjoyed” makes a broader claim that the available evidence does not support.

The Guardian’s interview with King records both his hostility toward Kubrick’s version of The Shining and his favorable view of Carrie. The careful conclusion is that Doctor Sleep earned King’s approval despite the long-running disagreement over Kubrick’s film—not that every other adaptation failed his test.

What is 28 Years Later about?

28 Years Later follows a father and son who leave the protection of a remote island to undertake a dangerous hunting mission in an England devastated by the Rage virus. Netflix places the story nearly 30 years after the original outbreak, while Sony presents the film as a new auteur-horror entry in the established universe.

Danny Boyle returns as director, and Alex Garland returns as writer. The film is not a documentary and is not based on a Stephen King book; its connection to the earlier franchise comes from the Rage-virus setting and the 28 Days Later mythology.

How should you watch the two films?

Watch 28 Years Later as a continuation of the 28 Days Later series, and watch Doctor Sleep as a sequel to The Shining. The films do not require a shared watch order because they are separate properties.

If you want to… Start with… Why
Follow the virus-apocalypse story 28 Days Later, then 28 Weeks Later, then 28 Years Later This preserves the broad development of the Rage-virus film universe.
Understand King’s Shining continuation Read or watch The Shining, then read or watch Doctor Sleep Doctor Sleep continues Danny Torrance’s story and deliberately bridges King’s novel with Kubrick’s film.
Choose only one film from this headline 28 Years Later for outbreak horror; Doctor Sleep for supernatural psychological horror The films share a horror audience but not a story, author, or fictional universe.

Readers who want the literary source can look for Stephen King’s Doctor Sleep novel as companion material. The book is not required to understand the movie, but it provides the source version of Danny’s adult story and clarifies why Flanagan’s adaptation had to reconcile King’s sequel with Kubrick’s earlier film.

Can you buy a physical copy of 28 Years Later?

Yes. Physical releases include 4K UHD, Blu-ray, DVD, and collector-oriented editions, although the exact stock, retailer, pricing, and regional specifications should be checked before purchase. Sony’s international home-video listing identifies a package containing 4K UHD and Blu-ray discs, and release coverage has documented additional physical formats.

If you prefer to own the film, look for the 28 Years Later 4K UHD release. A physical copy can be useful for viewers who do not want to depend on changing streaming rights, while a 4K edition is most worthwhile for viewers with a compatible 4K Blu-ray player and display. Do not assume that every “4K” listing includes the same discs, digital code, audio options, or regional compatibility.

Collectors can compare the 28 Years Later Blu-ray and 4K editions before ordering. The Sony Pictures home-video listing supports the existence of a 4K UHD/Blu-ray package, while GameSpot’s release coverage documents collector-edition availability. Neither source should be treated as a guarantee of current Amazon stock or price.

Where can you find the 28 Years Later soundtrack?

The film has an official soundtrack, and a 2xLP vinyl edition has been listed by Black Screen Records. The official soundtrack landing page is available at 28 Years Later’s soundtrack page, while the specialist retailer lists the 28 Years Later original soundtrack on 2xLP. Availability and pricing for physical music releases can change separately from film availability.

Bottom line

28 Years Later is available through Netflix in the US, with digital rental and purchase alternatives identified in the latest supplied JustWatch check. The Stephen King headline refers to a separate film: Doctor Sleep, the 2019 sequel adaptation that King famously approved because Mike Flanagan built a careful bridge between King’s novel and Kubrick’s movie. The phrase “only adaptation” needs qualification, but King’s approval of Doctor Sleep is well documented.

Which Shining adaptation did Stephen King like?

Is 28 Years Later connected to Doctor Sleep or Stephen King?
