Harrison Ford’s strongest films include landmark adventures and science fiction, but also performances in which he steps outside the familiar roles of Han Solo and Indiana Jones. This ranking weighs Ford’s work, the film’s craft and lasting appeal, and each title’s importance to his career. Franchise entries are judged as individual films; the list ranks the films, with Ford’s performance central to the assessment.

There is no objective universal order: Rotten Tomatoes ranks Ford’s filmography by Tomatometer, while JustWatch publishes an editorial ranking of its own. Those lists are useful reference points, not a definitive answer. The selection below draws on the breadth of Ford’s career, from ranked filmography entries and JustWatch’s picks to career credits documented by D23.

25 best Harrison Ford movies, ranked

1. The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

Ford’s Han Solo is at his most appealing in a film that deepens the character without losing the original’s wit and momentum. The second Star Wars film gives his roguish confidence real emotional stakes, making this the strongest blend of Ford’s star persona and a superbly built adventure.

2. Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)

As archaeologist-adventurer Indiana Jones, Ford makes intelligence, nerve, and comic exasperation feel like parts of the same heroic package. Steven Spielberg directed this fast, inventive adventure, released in 1981, which established one of Ford’s defining roles. Lucasfilm’s official film page identifies Spielberg as director and provides the film’s premise.

3. Blade Runner (1982)

Ford plays Rick Deckard, a weary investigator in a future where the line between human and artificial life is unsettled. His restrained performance fits the film’s ambiguity and gives its noir atmosphere a human center. Blade Runner is essential Ford, but for a very different reason than his buoyant adventure roles.

4. Witness (1985)

In Peter Weir’s thriller, Ford is John Book, a Philadelphia detective hiding among an Amish community after a young boy witnesses a murder. The role calls for quietness and vulnerability rather than swagger, and Ford delivers one of his most distinctive dramatic performances. Witness earned him his only Best Actor Academy Award nomination, according to D23 and Rotten Tomatoes.

5. The Fugitive (1993)

Ford’s Dr. Richard Kimble is a man forced to investigate his wife’s murder while fleeing the law. He brings intelligence and desperation to a tightly paced chase film, making the character’s ingenuity as compelling as the danger around him.

6. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989)

Ford’s third turn as Indiana Jones adds Sean Connery as his father, giving the serial-inspired adventure a family conflict that complements its action. Ford remains the physical and comic anchor, while the film’s warm, playful tone makes it one of the most satisfying entries in the series.

7. Star Wars: Return of the Jedi (1983)

Han Solo’s return brings Ford back to a character whose dry humor and skepticism balance the saga’s larger-than-life stakes. The film completes the original trilogy’s central arc and gives the character a more openly heroic role without erasing his scrappy charm.

8. Blade Runner 2049 (2017)

Ford revisits Deckard decades later in Denis Villeneuve’s deliberate, visually expansive continuation. Rather than simply repeat the original’s mystique, the film makes Deckard’s history part of a new character’s search for meaning. Ford’s weathered presence gives the reunion weight.

9. Patriot Games (1992)

Ford takes over as CIA analyst Jack Ryan in this adaptation of Tom Clancy’s novel. The performance makes Ryan a capable but reluctant protagonist, more grounded than an action hero by trade. It is an effective showcase for Ford’s ability to make intelligence and moral conviction feel like suspenseful assets.

10. Working Girl (1988)

In Mike Nichols’s workplace comedy-drama, Ford plays investment banker Jack Trainer, a romantic and professional ally to Melanie Griffith’s Tess. His relaxed comic timing suits a film that is as interested in ambition and class as romance, offering a lighter side of Ford outside his best-known franchises.

11. Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015)

Ford’s return as Han Solo is more than a cameo: the character’s old instincts and unresolved losses shape the film’s emotional center. The sequel relies on familiarity, but Ford gives Han enough rueful humanity to make the return matter.

12. American Graffiti (1973)

Before becoming a leading man, Ford made a memorable appearance as Bob Falfa, a confident street racer in George Lucas’s coming-of-age ensemble. The part is smaller than his later signature roles, but it captures the screen presence that would soon carry an entire film.

13. The Mosquito Coast (1986)

Ford plays Allie Fox, an idealistic inventor whose certainty and ambition become increasingly destructive to his family. The role strips away the reassuring heroism of Han Solo and Indiana Jones. It is among Ford’s most challenging character performances, even when the film’s intensity makes it a less comfortable watch.

14. Clear and Present Danger (1994)

Ford returns as Jack Ryan in a political thriller about covert action and the costs of power. His measured, principled Ryan provides a counterweight to the machinery of government and military escalation, while the film expands the character beyond the personal peril of Patriot Games.

15. Sabrina (1995)

In Sydney Pollack’s romantic comedy, Ford plays businessman Linus Larrabee opposite Julia Ormond and Greg Kinnear. The role asks him to soften a familiar air of control into romantic uncertainty. Sabrina is a polished, adult romance and a useful reminder that Ford’s appeal was never limited to action.

16. Air Force One (1997)

Ford plays President James Marshall, who confronts hijackers aboard the presidential aircraft. The premise is unabashedly high-concept, and Ford commits to its combination of authority, physical action, and family stakes. It is a particularly direct expression of his late-1990s action-star persona.

17. Presumed Innocent (1990)

Ford’s Rusty Sabich is a prosecutor accused of murdering a colleague, in a legal thriller built around doubt and divided loyalties. His controlled performance keeps the character’s private life and public defense in tension, making the film a strong dramatic counterpoint to Ford’s more overtly heroic roles.

18. The Conversation (1974)

Ford’s role as Martin Stett is supporting, but his presence in Francis Ford Coppola’s surveillance thriller is significant. He plays a polished, unsettling figure in a film otherwise dominated by Gene Hackman’s inward-looking performance. It is a worthwhile early-career credit for viewers tracing Ford’s path beyond leading roles.

19. The Frisco Kid (1979)

Ford co-stars with Gene Wilder in this comedy-western as a bank robber who becomes an unlikely companion to a rabbi traveling west. Their contrasting temperaments drive the film, and Ford’s dry humor works especially well against Wilder’s earnestness.

20. The Devil’s Own (1997)

Ford plays New York police officer Tom O’Meara, whose household takes in an Irish visitor whose hidden identity becomes dangerous. The film draws tension from Ford’s trust in a person he does not fully know, giving his genial, dependable screen image an uneasy edge.

21. What Lies Beneath (2000)

Ford shifts into psychological thriller territory as university professor Norman Spencer, whose apparently settled life begins to fracture. The role makes use of the audience’s familiarity with Ford as a reassuring presence, turning that expectation into part of the film’s unease.

22. 42 (2013)

Ford plays Brooklyn Dodgers executive Branch Rickey in the story of Jackie Robinson’s integration of Major League Baseball. The performance is a supporting turn rather than a Ford-centered vehicle, but his blunt, forceful Rickey gives the film a memorable institutional ally to Robinson’s struggle.

23. The Call of the Wild (2020)

Ford stars as John Thornton in this adaptation of Jack London’s novel, sharing the adventure with Buck, a digitally rendered dog. It is a later-career, family-oriented performance that leans on Ford’s weathered warmth rather than his familiar action-hero energy.

24. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023)

Ford’s final Indiana Jones adventure is a reflective return to the character, placing an older Indy in a story about history, loss, and the passage of time. Its appeal rests partly on seeing Ford revisit a role that has defined his career, though it does not reach the fleetness of the series’ best films.

25. Morning Glory (2010)

Ford plays veteran television journalist Mike Pomeroy in a newsroom comedy-drama, opposite Rachel McAdams. His gruff resistance to morning-show conventions gives the film much of its comic friction and showcases a less solemn, more openly playful mode.

What to watch first if you want a different side of Ford

  • For a serious dramatic performance: choose Witness, where Ford’s restraint is central rather than incidental.
  • For a suspenseful non-franchise thriller: try The Fugitive or Presumed Innocent.
  • For his science-fiction work: watch Blade Runner, then Blade Runner 2049 for the later continuation.
  • For comic timing outside adventure: start with Working Girl or Morning Glory.

How to read this ranking

The order is an editorial judgment, not a claim that one rating system settles the question. Rotten Tomatoes’ filmography ranking is based on Tomatometer scores, and JustWatch publishes a separate editorial list; both can change or reflect different criteria. This list gives weight to Ford’s performance and the whole film, while also considering how each role adds to his career. A franchise title is assessed as an individual film, not rewarded simply for belonging to a famous series.
