What each Hall of Fame category means
Performer
The Hall uses this category for artists whose originality, impact and influence changed rock and roll. The 2025 Performer group includes bands, solo singers and a hip-hop duo whose work helped shape popular music.
Musical Influence
This category recognizes artists whose music and performance style directly influenced and evolved rock and roll and other music that affected culture. Salt-N-Pepa and Warren Zevon are the 2025 recipients.

The Ahmet Ertegun Award is for non-performing music-industry professionals whose work influenced rock and roll’s creative development and growth. Lenny Waronker is the 2025 honoree.

How the Rock Hall says induction works
The Hall’s stated eligibility rule requires an artist’s first commercial release to have been issued at least 25 years before the induction year. The Hall also says nominees must demonstrate musical excellence, impact and influence.
- A nominating committee develops the annual slate.
- A voting body of more than 1,200 inductees, historians and music-industry professionals casts ballots.
- The annual fan vote counts as one ballot in the overall process.
Those are the Hall’s published process rules; they do not, by themselves, explain why any particular 2025 honoree was selected.

Why the 2025 list is broader than a performer roll call
The 13-honoree structure shows how the Hall separates performing careers from the people who expand music’s vocabulary or build its infrastructure. Performer inductees represent bands and solo acts; Musical Influence recognizes artists whose styles redirected later music; Musical Excellence acknowledges behind-the-scenes and session craft; and the Ahmet Ertegun Award honors an industry professional. There is no uniform source-backed metric for ranking these contributions, so the categories are best read as different forms of recognition rather than a single hierarchy.
John Sykes, chairman of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, said: “Each of these inductees created their own sound and attitude that had a profound impact on culture and helped to change the course of Rock & Roll forever.” That is the Hall chairman’s characterization of the class, not an independently measured ranking.
