It Ends With Us has two distinct endings. In both versions, Lily Bloom leaves Ryle Kincaid and chooses divorce after recognizing that her marriage has repeated the abuse she witnessed between her parents. The difference comes in the epilogue: the novel permits Lily and Ryle to co-parent their daughter, Emerson, while the film’s final reunion presents Lily and Emerson as “just the two of us” and reconnects Lily with Atlas.
How does the book end?
After giving birth to her daughter, Emerson (often called Emmy), Lily understands that staying married to Ryle would continue the pattern of violence she saw in her childhood home. Ryle’s abuse has made the marriage unsafe, even though he can also be loving and remorseful. Lily therefore asks for a divorce rather than waiting for the pattern to worsen.
The novel’s epilogue does not remove Ryle from Emerson’s life. Lily and Ryle remain connected as co-parents, so the ending leaves practical and emotional questions open: how can Lily protect herself and her daughter while allowing Ryle to be a father? Simon & Schuster’s official book-club discussion guide specifically asks whether Lily made the right choice by keeping Ryle involved in Emmy’s life and invites discussion of family support, feminine solidarity and the disconnected-heart symbol linked with Lily and Atlas.
Does Lily end up with Atlas or Ryle in the novel?
Lily does not stay with Ryle. She divorces him. The epilogue points toward a future in which she can build a relationship with Atlas while still sharing parenting responsibilities with Ryle. The book’s resolution is therefore not a simple replacement of one man with another: Lily’s decisive act is leaving the abusive marriage and setting a different example for Emerson.

How does the movie ending differ from the book?
The 2024 film keeps Lily’s divorce and her daughter but changes the final status of Ryle. In the last reunion between Lily and Atlas, Lily says it is “just the two of us,” referring to herself and Emerson. Ryle is absent from that closing image. The film thus gives viewers a more visually decisive separation between Lily’s new family life and the man who abused her.
The movie does not provide a detailed custody plan or establish every practical condition surrounding Ryle’s contact with Emerson. Its final scene is an emotional statement of where Lily stands, not a complete ruling on custody, safety planning or recovery.

Do Lily and Atlas get together at the end of the film?
Yes. Lily and Atlas reconnect in the film’s closing sequence, and the scene indicates that their relationship can begin again after Lily leaves Ryle. The film’s emphasis is on Lily and Emerson moving forward together, with Atlas entering that future, rather than on showing Ryle participating in it.
Why did the adaptation change the epilogue?
Director Justin Baldoni told TheWrap that an earlier draft included Ryle dropping Emerson off with Lily. He said the scene was removed after both he and the organization No More felt the film did not have enough time to establish a believable co-parenting arrangement. Baldoni described the planned scene this way: “In the original draft, we had a scene in the epilogue where we see Ryle dropping off their child to Lily, and they have a short conversation.”

The novel has more room to leave co-parenting as an ongoing, difficult question; the film uses its limited closing minutes to make Lily’s break from Ryle unmistakable.
What do the two endings mean?
Both endings are about breaking a family pattern
Sony Pictures’ official synopsis says Lily “must find her own strength to break the pattern or the pattern will break her.” That pattern is the abuse Lily witnessed between her father and mother and later experiences in her own marriage. Divorce is the action that stops Lily from normalizing the same household for Emerson.

The novel favors ongoing responsibility and ambiguity
By allowing Ryle to co-parent, the book asks readers to wrestle with a difficult reality: leaving an abusive spouse does not automatically end every relationship or decision involving a child. Lily’s support network and her ability to set boundaries remain central. The epilogue offers continued conflict rather than pretending that one legal decision resolves all emotional consequences.
The film favors a clearer emotional image
The film’s “just the two of us” line compresses that complexity into a final image of Lily and Emerson together, with Atlas beside them and Ryle outside the reunion. It supplies stronger romantic and emotional closure, even though it leaves the practical details of future contact unstated.
What happens to Lily, Atlas and Ryle after the story?
The first story ends with Lily choosing a life beyond her marriage to Ryle and reopening her connection with Atlas. The sequel, It Starts With Us, continues Lily and Atlas’s story from Atlas’s perspective. It does not change the fact that Lily’s defining decision in It Ends With Us is to leave Ryle.
Ryle’s continuing role is the key point of divergence: the novel’s epilogue includes him as Emerson’s co-parent, while the film’s last scene does not show him and frames Lily and Emerson as a two-person unit.
Other adaptation changes that affect the ending’s context
The film also removes most of the novel’s Ellen DeGeneres framing and changes Atlas’s restaurant name from BiB to Root. TIME reported that Hoover discussed condensing the novel for a feature film. These changes are separate from the epilogue, but they help explain why the movie tells the same central story with fewer explanatory detours.
Where the story comes from
Hoover’s original novel is a 384-page Atria title published August 2, 2016 (ISBN 9781501110368). The author’s site identifies it as the first of two books. Netflix’s Tudum identifies It Starts With Us as the 2022 follow-up told from Atlas’s point of view. Tudum has also reported a cumulative total of 169 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list; the page does not state the year for that figure, so it should not be read as a current ranking.
