Vogue linked the dress code to J. G. Ballard’s short story “The Garden of Time.” In the story, a count cuts flowers from his garden in an effort to slow an approaching mob. That image offered several routes for dressing: literal flowers and garden motifs, broader nature-inspired imagery, or looks that evoked age and fashion history.
What did Zendaya wear?
Zendaya, one of the event’s co-chairs, appeared in two distinct looks. Her first was an ocean-blue Maison Margiela couture ensemble by John Galliano, paired with a dramatic matching headpiece by Stephen Jones. Later, she changed into vintage Givenchy couture from the spring 1996 collection, according to Vogue’s coverage of her looks.

The change made her an especially clear example of the evening’s mix of contemporary design and archival fashion: the Margiela look was a current couture creation, while the Givenchy look brought a past collection onto the carpet.
What did Chris Hemsworth wear?
Hemsworth co-chaired the Gala and attended it for the first time in a custom ivory three-piece Tom Ford suit. British Vogue reported that his wife, Elsa Pataky, wore a coordinating custom Tom Ford look. How did celebrities interpret “The Garden of Time”?
The carpet did not settle on one uniform version of the theme. Some looks used more direct garden and floral references; others suggested nature more abstractly or drew on fashion’s past. Vogue’s roundup, for example, highlighted Zendaya’s vintage Givenchy and Gigi Hadid’s Thom Browne look.
