The 2025 Met Gala’s “Tailored For You” dress code turned the red carpet into a range of responses to Black dandyism: from sharply tailored suits and pinstripes to theatrical capes, hats and historical tributes. The May 5 event celebrated the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute exhibition Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, which explored how clothing and style shape Black identities across the Atlantic diaspora.
What did “Tailored For You” mean?
“Tailored For You” was the dress code; Superfine: Tailoring Black Style was the exhibition it accompanied. The code invited individual interpretation rather than prescribing one silhouette. Tailoring appeared in classic and sleek suits, as well as theatrical and avant-garde designs. The theme was not simply generic menswear: attendees explored suiting and traditionally masculine details through varied styles and gender presentations.
The gala took place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York on May 5, 2025. The exhibition ran from May 10 through October 26, 2025, and has now concluded. Vogue identifies Monica L. Miller’s book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity as foundational to the exhibition’s subject. Read Vogue’s exhibition and theme overview.
Red-carpet looks that interpreted the theme

Pinstripes, suiting and statement hats
- Rihanna in Marc Jacobs: The pinstripe look included the sleeves of a men’s suit tied behind her as a bustle and a large hat. The Associated Press reported that Rihanna was the last to walk the carpet.
- Zendaya in Louis Vuitton: She wore a tailored white trouser suit with a matching wide-brim hat. Vogue’s reference coverage connects the hat and styling to Diana Ross’s character Tracy Chambers in the 1975 film Mahogany.
- Janelle Monáe in Thom Browne: Exaggerated pinstripes made the suit a particularly bold expression of the evening’s Black-dandy theme, according to the Associated Press.
Historical references and collaborative design
- Teyana Taylor: Her Zoot Suit-inspired look featured a red feather-adorned top hat and matching cape. She collaborated with costume designer Ruth E. Carter.
- Colman Domingo in Valentino: Vogue linked his embellished blue cape to the blue cape André Leon Talley wore to the 2011 Met Gala.
- Gigi Hadid in Miu Miu: Vogue identified her gold lamé gown as a direct reference to a Balmain dress Josephine Baker wore in 1951, and as a tribute to designer Zelda Wynn Valdes.
- FKA twigs and Dua Lipa: Vogue also identified their looks as references to Josephine Baker.
- Maluma and Willy Chavarria: Vogue connected their interpretation to mid-1940s Chicano culture and the Pachucos.
These are documented examples, not a definitive ranking of the carpet. Historical connections here are attributed to Vogue’s reference coverage; they should not be taken as the wearers’ stated intentions unless separately confirmed. Vogue’s guide to historical references provides further context.
How to judge whether a look was on theme
There was no single objective score for “on theme.” Vogue invited readers to vote on looks, underscoring that the dress code allowed room for interpretation. A useful way to compare outfits is to consider:
Rank #2
- Historical specificity: Is a documented reference identifiable, and is it accurately attributed?
- Tailoring and silhouette: How does the cut, suiting, pinstripe or other menswear detail shape the look?
- Craft and collaboration: Are the designer or collaborators, such as Ruth E. Carter, part of the documented story?
- Individual interpretation: Does the outfit make the dress code its own, whether through a classic suit, a feminine silhouette, a dramatic cape or an avant-garde form?
The Associated Press captured one aspect of that range through William Dingle, director of style for blackmenswear.com: “women wanting to maintain a traditionally feminine dress silhouette while still respecting the theme,” said William Dingle, director of style for blackmenswear.com. The observation helps explain why the evening’s interpretations extended beyond conventional suits.
