These 15 characters stand out for how memorable their scythes are, how skillfully or creatively they use them, how much they matter to their stories, and how closely the weapon is tied to their identity. This is an editorial ranking, not a canonical power scale: scythes range here from transformed partners to magical manifestations, and the list does not claim that one wielder would defeat another.
“Anime” is used broadly enough to include RWBY, an animated web series rather than a Japanese anime. Hybrid weapons are identified as such; a chain blade or polearm is not automatically a conventional scythe.
15. Airi — Queen’s Blade
Airi is a scythe-wielding character whose weapon gives her a clear visual identity in Queen’s Blade. She makes the list for the directness of that design: a recognizable scythe is central to how she is presented, rather than a weapon that only briefly resembles one.
14. Erigor — Fairy Tail
Erigor is one of the series’ scythe users, and the weapon helps distinguish him among its combatants. His place here reflects that memorable silhouette and his role as an antagonist, rather than a claim that his scythe makes him stronger than the other characters ranked.

13. Giselle — GATE
Giselle is identified as a scythe wielder in the ranking references used for this list. The references differ on the spelling, giving “Giselle” and “Gisselle”; this entry uses “Giselle.” Her inclusion is for the weapon’s clear presence in her character design, though the available descriptions provide less detail about its name or specific combat use than they do for higher-ranked entries.
12. Haqua du Lot Herminium — The World God Only Knows
Haqua’s weapon is identified as the Scythe of Testament. A named scythe gives the weapon a stronger connection to her character than an interchangeable blade would, earning her a place among the more distinctive users on this list.

11. Jack the Ripper — Black Clover
Jack’s scythe is a manifestation of his magic, not an ordinary weapon he carries. Its cutting ability can change against opponents, making it a flexible expression of his fighting style. That inventive magical form earns him a higher spot than characters whose scythes are mainly visual signatures.
10. Celty Sturluson — Durarara!!
Celty stands apart from conventional combat-focused scythe users. Her supernatural identity and distinctive visual presentation make the weapon part of the character’s atmosphere as well as her silhouette. She ranks here for that strong design-and-identity connection, even though her appeal is not simply a matter of weapon technique.

9. Shinoa Hiiragi — Seraph of the End
Shinoa wields a scythe inhabited by a demon. That supernatural element makes the weapon more than a piece of equipment: it connects her fighting style to the series’ demonic conflicts and gives the scythe a meaningful story role.
8. L’Arc Berg Sickle — The Rising of the Shield Hero
L’Arc is identified as the Scythe Hero and wields the Vassal Scythe. Unlike a character who merely favors a scythe, his role is explicitly bound to one. The weapon’s place in the story and its connection to his identity make him one of the list’s clearest examples of a scythe defining a character.

7. Shuhei Hisagi — Bleach
Hisagi’s released weapon is described as two small scythes connected by a chain. This is a hybrid form rather than a single conventional farming-style scythe, and the linked blades give his weapon a distinctive shape and fighting identity. He ranks highly for that unusual design and its recognizable connection to him.

Dead Master’s scythe is notable for its bone-like design, which makes it immediately recognizable and closely aligned with her stark visual style. The weapon does more than signal that she can fight: it reinforces the character’s identity every time it appears.

5. Hidan — Naruto: Shippuden
Hidan’s signature weapon is a triple-bladed scythe. Its unusual construction makes it one of the most memorable scythe designs in anime, and its association with his combat identity ensures that it feels specific to him rather than like a generic fantasy weapon.
4. Blake Belladonna — RWBY
Blake’s Gambol Shroud is a hybrid weapon described as a variant ballistic chain scythe. It combines a scythe-like blade with a chain and ballistic elements, so calling it a conventional scythe would miss what makes it distinctive. Its versatility and direct connection to Blake’s fighting style earn it a high place here.
3. Ruby Rose — RWBY
Ruby’s Crescent Rose is among the most recognizable scythe designs in modern animation. Its importance to her character and combat identity makes it an especially strong fit for this ranking. Like Blake, Ruby is from RWBY, an animated web series; including her depends on using “anime” in the broader sense of animated series rather than restricting the term to Japanese productions.
2. Maka Albarn — Soul Eater
Maka’s partner Soul Evans transforms into a scythe; he is not simply a weapon she owns. Their meister-and-weapon partnership is fundamental to Soul Eater and makes Maka the list’s clearest example of a character whose story and fighting style are built around a scythe. GamesHorizon writer Stuart Ray made a similar editorial point in a June 24, 2023 ranking, writing that it would be difficult to discuss anime scythe users without mentioning Soul Eater. That is a critic’s assessment, not an official ranking.
1. Maka Albarn and Soul Evans — Soul Eater
Because the weapon is a person, ranking Maka alone would leave out half of what makes this pairing exceptional. Maka is the meister; Soul is her partner who becomes the scythe. Their bond makes the weapon central not just to a character’s look, but to the series’ premise and their shared role in its story. Together, they are the strongest overall choice for a list judged by design, use, narrative importance, and identity—not by a cross-series power comparison.
