The answer depends on what you expect a singing voice to do. A voice that sounds rough, nasal, thin, or almost spoken may strike one listener as awful and another as the very thing that makes a song memorable. These ten artists show why “worst singing voice” is a subjective label—not a verdict on musicianship, songwriting, or expressive skill.
Why an unconventional voice can work
Vocal polish is only one part of singing. Range and control matter, but so do timbre, phrasing, intelligibility, theatricality, and whether a voice suits its material. A recent Classical Music feature on polarizing voices likewise considers technical prowess alongside charisma, daring, and individuality. The ten examples below draw on a WatchMojo list as a starting point, not an objective ranking.
Ten talented musicians with polarizing voices
1. Tom Waits: theatrical grit
Waits’s voice can sound abrasive, gravelly, and deliberately exaggerated. That theatricality is also part of his storytelling: a song can feel like it is being delivered by a character rather than polished for vocal prettiness.
2. Lou Reed: closer to speech than song
Reed often used a restrained, speech-like delivery and a limited-seeming range. Listeners looking for soaring melodies may find it flat; its conversational quality can also make the words feel direct. He sang more conventionally on some earlier work, so the spare approach was not his only mode.

3. Conor Oberst: exposed and wavering
Oberst’s vulnerable, wavering sound can seem unstable beside a smooth pop vocal. For listeners who value emotional immediacy, that lack of polish can make a performance feel unusually exposed.
4. John Lydon: a sneer that suits punk
Lydon’s natural range is limited, and his sneering delivery is not built around conventional vocal beauty. In punk, that sharp, rebellious attitude can be a better fit than a technically immaculate performance.

5. Mark E. Smith: poetry at the edge of singing
The Fall’s Smith often snarled or spoke his lines rather than singing them in a conventional way. His delivery can challenge listeners expecting melody and smooth phrasing, while its rough, poetry-like character is central to the band’s sound.
6. Black Francis: whisper to roar
Black Francis moves from near-whispers to explosive roars. The abrupt shifts can feel raw rather than controlled, but they give the vocal a dramatic range of intensity even when it is not conventionally smooth.

7. Bob Geldof: rough-edged bite
Geldof’s rough, sneering delivery may lack the finish of a traditional rock crooner. Its bite, however, fits the Boomtown Rats’ punk-inflected sound and keeps the performance from feeling genteel.
8. Neil Young: a divisive, nasal tone
Young’s high, thin, nasal voice is one of the clearest examples of a distinctive timbre dividing listeners. It can sound fragile or grating; commentary on his work also describes it as a fit for the directness of his songs. Rolling Stone’s discussion of Young’s voice offers one perspective on that connection between sound and material.

9. Leonard Cohen: measured rather than powerful
Cohen’s limited range and measured cadence do not resemble a powerhouse singer’s. His controlled tone and songwriting give the songs their force without relying on vocal display.
10. Bob Dylan: a voice that changes with the song
Dylan’s voice has changed over time, and listeners remain divided over its nasal tones on Blonde on Blonde and the gruffer sound of later work. In an interview with Bill Flanagan on Dylan’s official site, he described his approach simply: “Depends what kind of song it is.” He explained that conversational standards call for a different intonation from songs using rougher vernacular language.

Asked about a crack in his voice on “September of My Years,” Dylan said, “My voice cracking here and there wouldn’t bother me, bum notes or wrong chords would bother me more.” He said the track was recorded live with the musicians playing together, and that he did not fix the crack. That distinction captures the trade-off: some listeners hear a flaw where the performer hears a moment that belongs in the take.

There is no objective worst-voice ranking here. “Awful” describes a listener’s reaction to traits such as limited range, rough texture, nasal tone, speech-like phrasing, or an intentionally theatrical delivery. Those traits are not, by themselves, evidence of weak musicianship or poor songwriting. The more useful question is whether a voice’s character serves the performance—and whether that character works for you.
