Anora is the best R-rated movie of the 2024 film cycle. Sean Baker’s Palme d’Or-winning tragicomedy combines propulsion, sexual candor, class observation and a devastating emotional turn without sacrificing its central character’s dignity. It leads a particularly strong group that also includes The Substance, Challengers, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, Nosferatu and The Brutalist.
This is a curated ranking rather than an objective numerical league table. It focuses on films identified as R-rated in the United States and released or premiered during the 2024 film cycle. The Brutalist needs a date qualification: it premiered at Venice in 2024, although its U.S. wide theatrical release was January 24, 2025.

Ranking note: This list uses Rotten Tomatoes as a reception check, not as a mechanical league table. The order also weighs direction, performances, formal ambition, originality, emotional force, genre execution, and rewatchability. Tomatometer scores can change.
Descriptions avoid major plot spoilers. The eligibility rule is U.S.-focused: each film was identified as R-rated in the United States and belongs to the 2024 film cycle through a 2024 release or premiere. That convention matters for The Brutalist, which premiered at Venice in 2024 but received its U.S. wide theatrical release on January 24, 2025.

The 15 best R-rated movies of 2024, ranked
1. Anora
Why it ranks first: Sean Baker’s Palme d’Or winner is the most complete film in this group. It begins with the velocity and comic timing of a screwball Cinderella story, then gradually reveals the economic and emotional costs hidden inside that fantasy. The transition is remarkably controlled: the film becomes sadder without losing its humor, and more painful without treating its central character as a punchline.
Mikey Madison gives Ani a kinetic, sexually candid, fiercely self-protective center. Baker’s street-level realism keeps the film grounded in work, money, class and power, but the direction never reduces Ani to a social issue. The result is both an exciting romantic comedy and a bruising story about the moment fantasy collides with recognition. The Rotten Tomatoes listing for Anora identifies it as an R-rated 2024 film and records a 93% Tomatometer score.
Choose it if: You want the strongest combination of entertainment, performance, social observation and emotional payoff on this list.

Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance is 2024’s most audacious formal provocation. Its premise turns the pressure to remain young and desirable into a grotesque visual machine, and the movie attacks beauty culture through production design, makeup effects, camera movement and deliberately excessive escalation.
Demi Moore’s performance is what gives the spectacle its weight. She commits fully to the film’s physical and emotional extremity, making the satire feel less like an abstract argument than a crisis happening to a recognizable person. The symbolism is less subtle than in Anora, but subtlety is not Fargeat’s goal; command, shock and accumulation are. The Rotten Tomatoes page for The Substance lists it as R-rated, released in 2024, with an 89% Tomatometer score.
Choose it if: You want horror that is graphic, funny, visually extravagant and openly furious about the demands placed on women’s bodies.
3. Challengers
Luca Guadagnino turns a professional-tennis triangle into a study of desire, ego, competition and performance. The film’s central relationship is never static: every conversation feels like a match, every match feels erotic, and every act of intimacy carries the possibility of winning or losing.

Zendaya, Mike Faist and Josh O’Connor create a volatile three-way chemistry, while the nonlinear structure keeps revising the emotional meaning of earlier scenes. Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’s score gives the movie a propulsive electronic pulse, turning tennis into something close to a nightclub, a battlefield and a stage. It is one of the year’s most immediately entertaining films, but its formal precision keeps it from being disposable entertainment. Rotten Tomatoes lists Challengers as an R-rated 2024 release with an 88% Tomatometer score.
Choose it if: You like stylish relationship dramas where ambition and sexual tension are expressed through competition.
4. The Brutalist
Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist is the ranking’s most ambitious dramatic work. Adrien Brody anchors a severe, expansive story about an immigrant artist, artistic integrity, patronage, trauma and the corrosive relationship between talent and power. Its architecture is not simply a visual subject; it becomes a way to think about how people try to impose order on displacement and history.
The film’s length and severity will divide viewers, and its episodic scale can feel imposing. Those qualities are also central to its achievement. Corbet aims for the weight of an American epic rather than the efficiency of a conventional biographical drama, and the commitment is unusual in contemporary cinema.
Why it qualifies as a 2024 film: The Brutalist premiered in competition at the 2024 Venice Film Festival, as documented by the Venice Biennale’s official film page. Its U.S. wide theatrical release was January 24, 2025, which is why some viewers may encounter it categorized as a 2025 release. The Rotten Tomatoes listing identifies it as R-rated and records a 93% Tomatometer score.
Choose it if: You are in the mood for a demanding, visually monumental drama about migration, art and power rather than a quick conventional narrative.
5. Love Lies Bleeding
Rose Glass’s Love Lies Bleeding is a muscular collision of erotic romance, family corruption, bodybuilding, crime and violence. Kristen Stewart and Katy O’Brian give the increasingly surreal story a bruised emotional core: their characters’ desire for one another is sincere even as the world around them turns more dangerous and unstable.

The film’s pulpy escalation is its defining strength. It does not remain a straightforward crime thriller for long, using heightened physicality and strange turns to make control, masculinity and queer desire feel inseparable from the body. The result is more emotionally grounded than its wildest images might suggest. Rotten Tomatoes lists Love Lies Bleeding as R-rated, released March 15, 2024, with a 94% Tomatometer score.
Choose it if: You want a love story with guns, sweat, family menace and a willingness to become gloriously strange.
6. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
George Miller’s prequel is less relentlessly kinetic than Mad Max: Fury Road, but it is richer in mythmaking and character history. Anya Taylor-Joy’s Furiosa carries a long survival story, while Chris Hemsworth gives the film an unusually theatrical antagonist whose grotesquerie fits the wasteland’s operatic tone.
The production design, vehicles, landscapes and action staging remain among the year’s most accomplished large-screen filmmaking. The narrative is more episodic than Fury Road, moving through chapters and stages of Furiosa’s life rather than building around one sustained chase. That structure slightly reduces its momentum, but it gives Miller room to explore the systems of power and revenge that produced the earlier film’s warrior.
Rotten Tomatoes identifies Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga as R-rated, released May 24, 2024, with a 90% Tomatometer score.
Rank #3
- 4K UHD+BLU-RAY
Choose it if: You want imaginative action cinema with a mythic scale and enough character history to make the spectacle matter.
7. A Different Man
Aaron Schimberg’s surreal dark comedy examines identity, performance and the desire to control how other people see us. Sebastian Stan plays a man whose transformation appears to offer a solution to social discomfort, but the film is more interested in what happens when a person mistakes control over his appearance for control over his life.
Adam Pearson supplies the film’s emotional and ethical counterweight, complicating the protagonist’s assumptions rather than allowing the story to settle into an easy makeover narrative. The plot becomes increasingly eccentric, and that strangeness may frustrate viewers looking for a conventional character arc. Its boldness and thematic seriousness, however, make it one of the year’s most distinctive films. Rotten Tomatoes lists A Different Man as R-rated and gives it a 93% Tomatometer score.
Choose it if: You prefer uncomfortable, conceptually daring films that use dark comedy to question identity and social perception.
8. Civil War
Alex Garland’s Civil War works most effectively as a sensory road movie about professional detachment, moral exhaustion and the spectacle of political violence. Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura and Cailee Spaeny give the journey a strong human center, while the embedded-journalist perspective turns combat photography and sound into sources of immediate danger.
The film’s refusal to explain exactly why its factions are fighting is intentionally provocative. It allows the story to focus on how violence is seen, recorded and normalized, but it also limits the movie’s political analysis. Garland is more interested in the ethics and psychology of witnessing than in building a detailed account of the future America he depicts. The Rotten Tomatoes page for Civil War identifies it as an R-rated 2024 film.
Choose it if: You want a tense, technically accomplished thriller about journalists moving through a fractured country, not a fully explained political allegory.

This compact possession film gets remarkable mileage from its fake-television format. The entire premise is built around a late-night host desperate to improve his ratings, and David Dastmalchian makes that desperation believable enough to anchor the supernatural material.
The live-broadcast structure turns the horror into a critique of ratings-driven entertainment: the show keeps going because stopping would mean failure, even as the situation becomes impossible to control. The atmosphere and formal conceit are highly effective. The ending is more divisive than the setup, but the film’s sense of period television and escalating on-air danger makes it one of the most accessible horror recommendations here. Rotten Tomatoes lists Late Night with the Devil as R-rated, released March 22, 2024, with a 97% Tomatometer score.
Choose it if: You want a short, high-concept horror movie with a strong central performance and a clever formal hook.
10. Nosferatu
Robert Eggers’s Nosferatu is built from atmosphere: decaying interiors, sickly light, oppressive shadows, tactile production design and a score that makes dread feel physical. The story’s familiar Gothic ingredients—obsession, disease, sexuality and death—are treated with the seriousness of a nightmare rather than the polish of a conventional monster movie.

That choice makes the vampire a figure of contamination and dread, although viewers expecting a more romantic interpretation may find it alienating. Rotten Tomatoes lists Nosferatu as R-rated, released December 25, 2024, with an 85% Tomatometer score.
Choose it if: You want carefully composed Gothic horror where lighting, design and texture are as important as plot.
11. Kinds of Kindness
Yorgos Lanthimos returns to a colder, more abrasive mode with this triptych about obedience, identity, desire and social control. Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, Willem Dafoe and Margaret Qualley play multiple roles with precision, creating a world where affection, authority and selfhood can all become mechanisms of coercion.
The best episodes are genuinely strange and darkly funny, but the nearly three-hour runtime and deliberate emotional chill make this a demanding watch. Unlike The Substance, its absurdity is rarely designed to offer cathartic release; it keeps the audience at an uncomfortable distance. That limits its accessibility, but the formal ambition and ensemble work merit inclusion. Rotten Tomatoes lists Kinds of Kindness as R-rated, released June 28, 2024, with a 71% Tomatometer score.

12. Monkey Man
Dev Patel’s directorial debut is a kinetic revenge picture that combines underground fighting, political anger, religious mythology and visceral close-quarters action. Patel also gives the lead role a physical commitment that makes the character’s pain legible even when the story’s political messaging becomes blunt.
The film’s visual grammar is energetic: cramped spaces, aggressive camera movement and impact-heavy fights create a sense of bodily desperation. It occasionally feels like several different revenge movies competing for room, but the ambition is substantial. Patel is not merely supplying a generic action vehicle; he is using genre to connect personal vengeance to institutional and class power. Rotten Tomatoes lists Monkey Man as R-rated, released April 5, 2024, with an 89% Tomatometer score.
Choose it if: You want a rough-edged action debut with political anger, mythology and punishing hand-to-hand combat.
13. The First Omen
The First Omen is a surprisingly serious studio horror prequel. Arkasha Stevenson finds striking imagery in religious dread, institutional power and bodily autonomy, while Nell Tiger Free gives the film a strong emotional lead rather than treating the character as a passive vessel for franchise mythology.
Best Value
- After witnessing a brutal murder, young Amish boy Samuel and his mother Rachel seek protection from police officer John Book (Harrison Ford).
The movie is most effective when its horror comes from institutions deciding what can happen to a body. It does not completely escape the obligations of prequel storytelling, including the need to connect itself to an established mythology, but its visual confidence and willingness to treat its themes seriously put it above most routine franchise installments. Rotten Tomatoes lists The First Omen as R-rated, released April 5, 2024, with an 84% Tomatometer score.
Choose it if: You want mainstream horror with religious imagery, strong atmosphere and more thematic weight than its franchise label suggests.
14. Abigail
Abigail is the most purely crowd-pleasing movie in the ranking. Its contained kidnapping setup evolves into a fast, bloody vampire comedy with an appealing ensemble, practical effects and a cast willing to let every character become ridiculous under pressure.
It is less formally ambitious than the films above it, but it understands the value of momentum and comic contrast. The movie keeps finding new ways to put its characters together, separate them and make their survival increasingly unlikely. That reliable genre execution makes it an easy recommendation for a group watch, even if it does not linger thematically after the credits. Rotten Tomatoes lists Abigail as R-rated, released April 19, 2024, with an 83% Tomatometer score.
Choose it if: You want a bloody, funny ensemble horror movie that prioritizes entertainment and practical mayhem.
15. The Bikeriders
Jeff Nichols’s period crime drama follows a Midwestern motorcycle club whose communal identity gradually hardens into organized violence. Jodie Comer, Austin Butler and Tom Hardy give the film a compelling presence, and the photography captures both the romance of the subculture and the decay beneath it.
The storytelling is more conventional and episodic than the films ranked above it. Its strength lies in texture and performance: the club feels like a social world before it becomes a criminal structure, and the characters’ nostalgia cannot fully hide what that transformation costs. It is a worthwhile final selection because its atmosphere and actors make a familiar rise-and-fall story feel lived-in. Rotten Tomatoes lists The Bikeriders as R-rated, released June 21, 2024, with a 79% Tomatometer score.
Choose it if: You want a character-led period crime film about community, masculinity and the moment rebellion becomes organized violence.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is The Brutalist included among 2024 movies if its U.S. wide release was in 2025?
The list uses a 2024 film-cycle definition: a film qualified through a 2024 release or premiere and was identified as R-rated in the United States. The Brutalist premiered at the 2024 Venice Film Festival but opened widely in U.S. theaters on January 24, 2025, so it is included with that qualification.
Are these movies ranked only by Rotten Tomatoes scores?
No. Rotten Tomatoes scores are included as a reception snapshot, but the ranking also considers filmmaking craft, performances, ambition, originality, emotional force, genre execution and rewatchability. A higher Tomatometer score does not automatically produce a higher position.
