The best erotic movies make desire part of the filmmaking, not just the subject of a scene. This ranking looks at how strongly desire shapes the story, how direction and performance create tension, how distinctive each film is, and whether its erotic elements deepen character or theme. It is a critic’s selection, not a definitive canon or an objective scorecard.
The window here runs from October 1996 to October 2026, using each film’s original release year rather than a later release in another territory. That distinction matters: BFI lists The Handmaiden as a UK release on 14 April 2017, while the BBFC identifies its production year as 2016. Erotic cinema also extends beyond explicitness: TIME’s discussion of In the Mood for Love describes how a film can create sensual charge through atmosphere and restraint, without depicting sex. TIME’s 2017 list offers that broader frame.
15 best erotic movies of the last 30 years
1. The Handmaiden (2016)
Park Chan-wook’s Korean thriller makes desire inseparable from its elaborate con plot. Set in 1930s Korea under Japanese occupation, it follows Sookee, a handmaiden to heiress Hideko, whose life is controlled by her uncle. The film’s shifts in perspective make attraction, deception and power continually revise one another. BFI describes it as an intricate story of erotic intrigue and notes its adaptation of Sarah Waters’ Fingersmith: BFI’s review.
Content note: The BBFC lists nudity, sexual references, BDSM activity and violence. Its record identifies the production year as 2016: BBFC classification record.

2. In the Mood for Love (2000)
Wong Kar-wai’s Hong Kong romance turns proximity and self-restraint into its central source of erotic tension. Two neighbors suspect their spouses are having an affair; what develops between them is shaped as much by what they refuse to do as by what they feel. Repeated encounters, carefully composed frames and an aching musical rhythm make longing the film’s subject and its form.
3. Eyes Wide Shut (1999)
Stanley Kubrick’s final film follows a married doctor through a nocturnal maze of jealousy, fantasy and sexual secrecy. Its cool, dreamlike pace makes desire feel less like fulfillment than an unsettling force that exposes insecurity. The film earns its place through sustained atmosphere and ambiguity rather than conventional thriller momentum.
4. Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019)
Céline Sciamma’s French period romance builds its eroticism through looking: an artist is commissioned to paint a young woman who does not want to sit for a portrait. Their attention to one another gradually changes the work and the relationship. The film’s restraint gives each glance and gesture narrative weight, making artistic observation itself part of the romance.
Rank #2
5. The Piano Teacher (2001)
Michael Haneke’s adaptation of Elfriede Jelinek’s novel centers on Erika, a piano instructor whose private desires and public discipline collide when a student pursues her. Isabelle Huppert’s performance gives the film a difficult, unnerving intimacy. It is an essential but deliberately uncomfortable choice: erotic desire here is entangled with control, humiliation and emotional damage, not presented as uncomplicated liberation.

6. Y tu mamá también (2001)
Alfonso Cuarón’s Mexican road film follows two teenage friends and an older woman on a journey that changes their friendship and their understanding of intimacy. Its sensuality comes from a mixture of youthful bravado, shifting loyalties and the physical openness of the road-movie form. The film’s desire is social as well as personal: class, age and friendship shape what the characters can say and do.
7. Secretary (2002)
Steven Shainberg’s romantic drama follows Lee, a young woman who takes a job as a legal secretary, and the attorney who becomes her partner in a BDSM relationship. Its distinctive contribution is to treat negotiated power as a developing relationship rather than as a visual shorthand for danger. The film’s success depends on the awkward humor and vulnerability of its performances as much as its sexual premise.
Rank #3
8. Romance (1999)
Catherine Breillat’s French film confronts sex, autonomy and dissatisfaction without smoothing its provocations into a conventional love story. It belongs here for the way it makes sexual experience an argument about a character’s life, rather than an ornamental interlude. BFI calls it Breillat’s best-known feature and notes that it received an X rating in some territories; classification language varies by market. BFI’s introduction to Breillat.
9. Lust, Caution (2007)
Ang Lee’s period thriller follows a young woman drawn into an operation to get close to a powerful collaborator during wartime. Seduction becomes both strategy and emotional risk, and the film’s erotic intensity is inseparable from surveillance and danger. Its most intimate scenes are consequential to the story, not detachable set pieces.

Todd Haynes’s adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s novel follows the attraction between a department-store clerk and an older woman seeking a divorce in 1950s America. Restrained performance, glances across rooms and the limited privacy available to the characters make desire feel simultaneously ordinary and precarious. Its quietness is a deliberate mode of erotic storytelling, not an absence of passion.
Rank #4
11. Blue Is the Warmest Colour (2013)
Abdellatif Kechiche’s French drama tracks a young woman’s relationship with an art student across years of attraction, intimacy and change. Its close, immersive style gives the relationship a strong physical presence, while the story’s larger achievement is its attention to how desire and identity evolve over time. The film’s explicit material and prolonged scenes will not suit every viewer; its ranking reflects the centrality of intimacy to the drama, not a claim that explicitness alone makes a film successful.
12. Shame (2011)
Steve McQueen’s drama follows a New Yorker whose compulsive sexual behavior leaves little room for intimacy. Its urban spaces and controlled visual style make the character’s isolation palpable. This is an anti-romantic entry: the film is erotic in subject, but its purpose is to show how sex can become a barrier to connection.
13. Swimming Pool (2003)
François Ozon’s French-British psychological drama follows a crime novelist who travels to a country house and finds her solitude disrupted by the owner’s daughter. Its erotic charge grows from observation, fantasy and uncertainty about what is being witnessed or imagined. The film ranks below the more emotionally expansive entries, but its elegant use of mystery makes desire part of its storytelling machinery.

14. Crash (1996)
David Cronenberg’s film explores a group of people who connect sexual excitement with car crashes and bodily injury. It is the ranking’s most deliberately transgressive choice, treating erotic fixation as a disturbing subculture rather than a conventional romance. The film’s 1996 release falls within this list’s window only if its original release is dated after October 1996; release dates can differ by territory, so it sits at the boundary rather than serving as a representative entry.
15. Benedetta (2021)
Paul Verhoeven’s period drama follows a nun in a convent whose visions and relationship with another woman unsettle the institution around her. The film mixes erotic desire with religious authority, ambition and satire. Its provocative tone is less intimate than the films above it, but the collision between private longing and public power gives it a clear place in a broad account of erotic cinema.

Explicit scenes are only one route. A film can make desire legible through the delay before a touch, a repeated look, the arrangement of bodies in a frame, costume, sound or the consequences of restraint. In In the Mood for Love, for example, withheld action is central to the sensual effect; TIME’s 2017 list discusses this kind of atmosphere alongside more overtly sexual films. BFI’s collections also encompass films described in terms of explicit or transgressive sexual content, showing how broad the category can be: BFI Player’s Sex collection and its rental collection.
How to choose a film from this list
- For intricate plotting and erotic suspense: start with The Handmaiden or Eyes Wide Shut.
- For sensuality built on restraint: choose In the Mood for Love, Carol or Portrait of a Lady on Fire.

- For intimacy examined as part of a longer personal history: choose Y tu mamá también or Blue Is the Warmest Colour.
Streaming, rental and disc availability changes by country and date. BFI’s curated collections illustrate that sex-themed programming appears on more than one kind of service, but they do not establish where every film on this list is currently available.
