This ranking puts Tombstone first for Kilmer’s unforgettable Doc Holliday, while weighing each film’s staying power, his performance and the role’s place in his career. It is an editorial ranking, not a definitive consensus: a list focused on the best overall film might put Heat ahead of a list focused on Kilmer’s most memorable performance.
What makes these Val Kilmer movies worth watching?
Kilmer could define a film with a supporting role, lead a demanding biographical performance or make a mainstream action character last in the public imagination. This list balances those different strengths instead of treating box-office visibility or starring status as the only measure. It also ranges beyond the familiar hits to include comedy, fantasy and a darker lead role.
The selections draw on career and film-credit context from Rotten Tomatoes’ Val Kilmer filmography, AFI Catalog, and retrospectives from the Washington Post, the Associated Press and The Criterion Collection. Those sources help establish the career context; they do not create one objective order of the best 12.
12 best Val Kilmer movies, ranked
1. Tombstone (1993)
Kilmer’s Doc Holliday is the signature character performance of his career: witty, watchful and memorable without pulling the film away from its ensemble. He makes Holliday’s flamboyance and fragility feel inseparable, giving the western a vivid counterweight to its larger-than-life gunfighters. The role is a natural first pick when the question is which Kilmer performance stays with you. The Washington Post and AP both highlight the film in their retrospectives, and Criterion’s remembrance returns to the role’s enduring appeal.

2. Heat (1995)
Michael Mann’s crime film is a formidable ensemble, and Kilmer’s Chris Shiherlis shows how much presence he could bring to a supporting part. He plays a skilled criminal whose personal life is under pressure, adding a volatile, vulnerable thread to the film’s tightly controlled world. Heat could rank first in a list that prioritizes the film as a whole; this ranking gives the top spot to the more defining individual performance in Tombstone.
3. The Doors (1991)
As Jim Morrison, Kilmer took on an unusually demanding blend of impersonation and musical performance. The role asks him to carry the film’s portrait of a famous frontman rather than simply evoke a familiar screen persona. In AP’s 2025 account of the documentary Val, Kilmer’s commitment to the part is summed up in his reported words: “Not playing Jim was not an option.”
4. Top Gun (1986)
Iceman gave Kilmer a lasting mainstream screen identity. His cool, controlled rival to Maverick turns a supporting role into one of the film’s defining personalities, and the friction between the two pilots helps give the action story its human stakes. The performance belongs on a career list even though Kilmer’s later work would show a much wider range.
5. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005)
In Shane Black’s comic-noir, Kilmer plays Gay Perry, a private investigator whose dry delivery and sharp timing make him an ideal foil for Robert Downey Jr.’s frantic would-be actor. It is a late-career comic showcase, and a useful reminder that Kilmer’s screen presence did not depend on playing the most prominent character in a scene. Rotten Tomatoes’ filmography identifies his role as Perry.

This spy-movie parody gave Kilmer an early starring showcase as rock singer Nick Rivers, sending him through a string of absurd comic set pieces. It reveals a playful, self-aware performer well before Top Gun and The Doors made his dramatic and action personas more widely familiar. AP’s career overview places the film among his notable early roles.
7. Real Genius (1985)
Kilmer plays Chris Knight, a gifted college student whose easy confidence keeps this science-fiction comedy from becoming only a string of campus pranks. The film earns its place here as a curated pick from his early comic period: it broadens the picture of his career between the anarchic parody of Top Secret! and the mainstream breakthrough that followed.

8. Willow (1988)
This fantasy-adventure adds a different register to the ranking. Kilmer’s Madmartigan begins as a boastful, opportunistic swordsman and becomes part of the film’s ensemble journey. The role matters less as a solo showcase than as evidence of his range across genres and his ability to bring comic swagger to a large-scale adventure.
9. True Romance (1993)
Kilmer’s brief appearance as Elvis Presley—who appears to Clarence as a guide—is one of the film’s most distinctive supporting touches. It is a compact role rather than a lead performance, but its offbeat mood and specificity make it a good example of how Kilmer could leave an impression with limited screen time. Rotten Tomatoes’ guide includes the film among its Kilmer selections.
10. Batman Forever (1995)
Playing Bruce Wayne, Kilmer took on one of cinema’s most recognizable franchise leads. The film’s heightened, camp-leaning style makes it a contrast to the restraint of Heat or the naturalistic detail of The Doors. Its place here reflects the role’s scale in his career, not a claim that it is the most revealing performance on the list. The Washington Post includes it in its selection of notable Kilmer roles.

11. The Salton Sea (2002)
In this darker lead role, Kilmer plays a trumpet player pulled into a dangerous underworld after a personal tragedy. It is a less familiar choice than Top Gun or Tombstone, but its inclusion gives the ranking room for a more troubled, unconventional performance and a film that sits outside his best-known studio hits.
12. Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
Kilmer returned as Iceman decades after the original, in a brief appearance that draws its force from the history between character and actor. The Criterion Collection’s 2025 remembrance describes the emotional impact of the scene and cites a Los Angeles Times assessment. The role has limited screen time, so it ranks lower on performance breadth; readers who value emotional resonance and career closure above screen time could reasonably place it higher.
