For a first stop, choose Hunger: it is an early career landmark and the clearest example of Michael Fassbender’s intense work with director Steve McQueen. This ranking weighs performance, role significance, career impact and genre variety—not a critic or audience consensus. It moves between intimate drama, historical films, science fiction, superhero stories, comedy and thriller, so the best pick depends partly on what you want to watch.

12 best Michael Fassbender movies, ranked

  1. Hunger (2008)

Fassbender’s portrayal of Irish republican prisoner Bobby Sands is a defining early performance: physically demanding, tightly controlled and central to Steve McQueen’s stark drama. The film began a major director-actor collaboration that continued with Shame and 12 Years a Slave. The Irish Film & Television Academy recognized Fassbender with its lead-actor award and Rising Star award in 2009; Cannes listed the film in Un Certain Regard. Choose it for austere, challenging filmmaking rather than a conventional biopic.

  2. Shame (2011)

In McQueen’s New York-set drama, Fassbender plays Brandon, a man whose compulsive sexual behavior and strained relationship with his sister shape the story. The performance earned him the 2011 IFTA lead-actor award and a Golden Globe nomination. It is among his most exposed and emotionally difficult leading roles, and a strong choice for viewers seeking an adult character study rather than a plot-driven film.

  3. 12 Years a Slave (2013)

Fassbender plays Edwin Epps, an enslaver in McQueen’s historical drama. His forceful supporting performance earned an IFTA award and major supporting-actor nominations, but Epps is not the story’s moral center: the film follows Solomon Northup, a free Black man kidnapped and sold into slavery, and his struggle to regain freedom. Searchlight Pictures describes it as “based on an incredible true story of one man’s fight for survival and freedom.” It is essential viewing, though its subject matter is harrowing.

  4. Steve Jobs (2015)

Danny Boyle directed Aaron Sorkin’s film, with Fassbender as Apple co-founder Steve Jobs. Rather than offer a cradle-to-grave biography, it stages three product launches and the conflicts around them. Fassbender won the IFTA lead-actor award and received an Oscar and Golden Globe nomination for the role. The British Film Institute lists the runtime as 121 minutes. It is the most dialogue-driven pick here, built around Sorkin’s rapid exchanges and Boyle’s kinetic direction.

  5. Inglourious Basterds (2009)

Quentin Tarantino’s alternate-history war film gives Fassbender a memorable supporting turn as British officer Archie Hicox. The role is smaller than his work in the films above, but his precise, mannered performance makes the character’s scenes stand out. It also shows how comfortably he can work within a stylized ensemble film.

  6. Macbeth (2015)

Fassbender stars as Shakespeare’s ambitious Scottish nobleman in Justin Kurzel’s adaptation, opposite Marion Cotillard as Lady Macbeth. The film’s bleak atmosphere and battle imagery put the tragedy’s violence and psychological unraveling front and center. Cannes selected it for competition. It ranks here for the force of its lead performance and for a striking screen interpretation of a familiar play.

  7. Fish Tank (2009)

Andrea Arnold’s Cannes competition film is a social-realist coming-of-age drama about Mia, a teenager living on an Essex estate. Fassbender plays Connor, a visitor whose presence unsettles the household. The part is supporting, and the film’s point of view belongs to Mia; its place on this list reflects both the early independent-film context of Fassbender’s career and Arnold’s intimate, observational approach.

  8. A Dangerous Method (2011)

David Cronenberg’s historical drama casts Fassbender as psychiatrist Carl Jung, alongside Viggo Mortensen as Sigmund Freud and Keira Knightley as Sabina Spielrein. It offers a quieter, psychologically focused alternative to his more physically intense roles. For viewers interested in the early history of psychoanalysis and the strain between professional conviction and personal desire, it is a distinctive entry.

  9. X-Men: First Class (2011)

Fassbender’s debut as Magneto turns the mutant character’s origin into a story of trauma, friendship and ideological conflict with Charles Xavier, played by James McAvoy. It is his most recognizable franchise role and a different kind of showcase from the independent dramas higher on the list. The Irish Film & Television Academy records his debut as Magneto and his later returns to the role.

  10. Frank (2014)

In Lenny Abrahamson’s offbeat comedy, Fassbender plays the title character, an eccentric musician who keeps a large papier-mâché head on. The concealment makes the performance an unusual test of voice, movement and timing rather than facial expression. It is the list’s clearest tonal change of pace, especially for viewers who want something stranger and lighter than the dramas above.

  11. Prometheus (2012)

Ridley Scott’s science-fiction film casts Fassbender as David, an android aboard an expedition searching for humanity’s origins. David’s composed manner and uncertain relationship to his human creators give Fassbender room to build unease through small gestures. It is a strong pick for viewers who want his work in large-scale genre filmmaking; the film also connects to Scott’s Alien universe.

  12. The Killer (2023)

David Fincher’s thriller follows Fassbender as a methodical contract killer after a job goes wrong. The role is deliberately restrained, with the film’s tension coming from routines, observation and the gap between the character’s rules and his actions. It adds a contemporary thriller to a career that continued beyond the 2010s; the IFTA profile also lists 2025 credits for Kneecap and The Agency.

How to choose what to watch first

  • For a career landmark: Start with Hunger, then consider Shame and 12 Years a Slave to see his three collaborations with Steve McQueen.
  • For a lead performance in a propulsive drama: Try Steve Jobs.
  • For Shakespeare or historical drama: Choose Macbeth or A Dangerous Method.
  • For genre filmmaking: Pick Prometheus for science fiction, X-Men: First Class for superhero action, or The Killer for a contemporary thriller.
  • For a change of tone: Choose Frank; for naturalistic independent drama, try Fish Tank.

Why this ranking is subjective

There is no single objective order for films that ask different things of Fassbender: a supporting role in an ensemble, a demanding character study and a franchise performance are not interchangeable measures. This list puts career-defining collaborations and acclaimed lead work near the top while retaining films that show his range. The Irish Film & Television Academy records two Oscar nominations for him, for 12 Years a Slave and Steve Jobs; the Golden Globes profile lists three acting nominations, for Shame, 12 Years a Slave and Steve Jobs.
