These twelve pairings are a newly selected group of documented Western figures—not a claim to reproduce an unidentified original list. “Cowboy duo” is a broad popular label, not a precise historical category: several people here were performers, lawmen, or figures of frontier lore rather than ranch cowboys.
Documented partners and collaborators
1. Buffalo Bill Cody and Wild Bill Hickok
William “Buffalo Bill” Cody, a scout and showman, and James “Wild Bill” Hickok, a scout and gunfighter, knew one another and worked for the freighting company Russell, Majors & Waddell. Hickok mentored Cody, who later invited him to join the Buffalo Bill Combination. They appeared together in the stage production Scouts of the Plains beginning in 1873; the Buffalo Bill Center of the West identifies it as the only show they performed together. They remained friends until Hickok was murdered in Deadwood in 1876. Their shared stage work and friendship are documented, even if later Western storytelling often makes their partnership seem more extensive. Buffalo Bill Center of the West.

2. Annie Oakley and Frank Butler
Oakley was a sharpshooter and performer; Butler was a marksman in a traveling variety act. They met when Butler challenged local shooters and Oakley beat him in a shooting contest. They married and became performing partners, making theirs both a documented marriage and a professional collaboration. Their story is often remembered through Oakley’s celebrated stage persona, but the partnership began with a real contest and continued in shared performance. American Cowboy and Biography.com.
3. Roy Rogers and Dale Evans
Rogers and Evans were twentieth-century Western entertainers, not frontier-era cowhands. They met while making the 1944 film The Cowboy and the Senorita, married four years later, and worked together in films and television. Their relationship is therefore best understood as a documented marriage and entertainment partnership. Their screen identities helped make them enduring symbols of the cowboy-and-cowgirl pairing. 4. Calamity Jane and Wild Bill Hickok
Martha “Calamity Jane” Canary and Hickok knew one another in the American West, but the evidence does not support the familiar claim that they were a romantic couple. National Geographic describes them as likely acquaintances, while the University of Nebraska–Lincoln says their acquaintance lasted only a few weeks before Hickok’s murder. Dime novels and sensational newspaper accounts later heightened their shared fame and recast Jane as Hickok’s love interest. The connection is real; the romance belongs to folklore rather than established history. National Geographic and University of Nebraska–Lincoln.
Historical figures who should not be turned into a fictional team
5. Nat Love and Bass Reeves
Nat Love, a Black cowboy who later recounted his life in an autobiography, and Bass Reeves, a Black lawman, are significant figures in the history of the American West. That shared historical importance does not establish that they were partners or companions. TIME discusses both in the context of the film The Harder They Fall and stresses that sharing a name with a historical figure does not mean the film’s characters had a real-life connection. Love’s autobiography includes self-reported exploits that are disputed, so claims drawn from it should be attributed to his account rather than treated as independently settled fact. They belong in a broad history of the West, but the available account does not establish them as a real duo. TIME.

How to tell a real Western duo from a legend
For any supposed cowboy pairing, separate four questions: what kind of relationship the people had, what work or event they actually shared, how long the connection lasted, and how strong the evidence is. A marriage and shared performances, like Oakley and Butler’s, are not the same as a brief acquaintance later transformed by popular culture, like Jane and Hickok’s. And two real historical figures appearing together in a modern film does not by itself prove that they knew each other.
