First check whether your exact TV model and platform are supported. ITV lists LG Smart TVs from 2016 onward and Samsung Smart TVs from 2017 onward; 2016 Samsung models may have on-demand viewing only. Sony support depends on the model and platform, so a missing app may be a compatibility limit rather than a fault.
For a supported TV, work through these 11 checks from least disruptive to most disruptive. Start by identifying what fails: a missing app, a loading screen, buffering, playback, live TV, sign-in or one particular programme can point to different causes.
Check ITVX compatibility before troubleshooting
ITV’s current compatibility list is the best starting point. ITV Hub is the former name; look for ITVX in the TV’s app store. App availability can also depend on the TV’s platform and country or region settings. ITVX is a UK service, so do not assume an app missing on a TV configured for another region indicates an installation problem.
- Samsung: ITV lists Smart TVs from 2017 onward. ITV says 2016 Samsung models may offer on-demand viewing only, so do not assume they support live ITVX.
- LG: ITV lists Smart TVs from 2016 onward. A model year alone does not guarantee identical menus or performance; the webOS version, region setting and available storage can matter.
- Sony: Check the exact model and platform. ITV’s compatibility wording includes YouView devices from Sony, but it does not establish that every Bravia, Android TV or Google TV model supports the full ITVX app.
If ITVX is absent from a compatible TV’s store, check the TV’s region and software, then confirm the exact model against ITV’s list. If the platform is not listed, repeated reinstall attempts will not add support.

11 ways to fix ITVX on a smart TV
-
Check whether the problem affects one programme or the whole service
Try another on-demand programme, then try live TV. If possible, open ITVX on a phone or computer using the same home connection and test another app on the TV. A single failing title is different from ITVX failing everywhere; if ITVX fails on several devices, look at the service, account or broadband connection before resetting the television. ITV’s playback-problems guidance asks users to note the affected content and whether live TV, on-demand or both are affected. This check does not confirm an outage; use ITV’s own updates for that.
-
Fully restart the TV
Exit ITVX, turn off the television, unplug it from the wall for about 30–60 seconds, reconnect it, switch it on and reopen the app. A standby press may leave some processes running. ITV recommends restarting the device as an early step in its smart-TV troubleshooting guidance. On Samsung, a full power cycle is often called a cold boot; Samsung includes it among its initial remedies for apps that freeze or fail to load (Samsung troubleshooting).

-
Check the TV’s connection and other apps
Confirm that the TV reports an internet connection, then open another streaming app. Notice whether the connection drops during playback, whether the TV is on a guest or restricted network, and whether Ethernet is steadier than Wi-Fi. Restarting the router is a useful test if several apps are affected, but it is not a guaranteed ITVX fix. ITV says that when other apps also fail, the likely issue is the connection or device rather than ITVX alone. Stability, Wi-Fi interference and congestion matter; do not assume a particular headline speed will solve the problem.
-
Try a phone hotspot to isolate the home network
Temporarily connect the TV to a phone’s mobile hotspot and open ITVX. If it works there but not on home Wi-Fi, investigate the router, Wi-Fi signal, DNS settings, network filtering or broadband connection. If it still fails, focus on the TV’s compatibility, app, software or ITVX service. LG recommends smartphone tethering as a way to distinguish network trouble from a TV issue (LG app troubleshooting). Use a hotspot briefly: mobile data may be limited, and carrier performance or restrictions can affect streaming.

-
Update ITVX
Open the television’s app area or store, find ITVX and install an available update. Samsung’s Apps area, LG’s Home screen or LG Content Store, and the relevant Sony platform’s app mechanism may use different labels and controls. Exact steps vary by model and software. Samsung says app updates can address apps that crash or will not open (Samsung UK app guidance); ITV also includes app updating in its connected-device steps.
-
Install available TV software updates
Check the TV’s system or support settings for a software update, install it and restart the set. Menu names differ between Samsung Tizen, LG webOS and Sony models. Samsung’s guidance includes updating TV software and, where necessary, obtaining model-specific firmware from Samsung Support for USB installation (Samsung troubleshooting). On Sony Android TV or Google TV, one example path is Home → Settings → Device Preferences → About → Restart → Restart; Sony notes that menus vary by model (Sony restart guidance). An update can repair an existing installation, but it cannot make an unsupported model compatible.

Close ITVX and launch it again
Return to the TV home screen, close or exit ITVX if the platform offers that control, wait a few seconds and reopen it. This is worth trying if the app was suspended in the background, the TV resumed from standby or playback was interrupted. If it remains stuck, use the full restart in step 2 rather than repeating the quick relaunch.
-
Sign out of ITVX, then sign in again
If ITVX opens but account access or content looks wrong, use the app’s account menu to sign out, restart the app and sign in again. First check that the account works on another device and that you are using the intended account or profile. If browser or phone sign-in succeeds but TV activation does not, the problem may be specific to the TV app or its activation session; creating a new subscription is not a useful first troubleshooting step.

-
Reinstall ITVX if the TV allows it
Remove the app, restart the television, find ITVX in the app store and install it again, then sign in. Reinstallation removes local app state and normally means signing in again. Samsung recommends deleting and reinstalling an app before resetting Smart Hub (Samsung troubleshooting), and LG describes updating or reinstalling apps that freeze or fail (LG app troubleshooting). Some Sony or YouView sets may treat ITVX as a built-in app that cannot be removed in the usual way.
-
Clear cache or app data only if the TV offers those controls
Some Android TV or Google TV models expose Settings → Apps → ITVX → Storage & cache → Clear cache. A Clear data option is more disruptive: it can sign you out and erase local app information. Do not apply Android menu instructions to Samsung Tizen or LG webOS; those platforms may not offer an equivalent per-app cache control. Use restart, update or reinstall options available on that TV instead. ITV notes that cache and data clearing is available only on some devices in its troubleshooting guidance.
-
Reset the TV platform only as a last resort—or use a supported device
Resetting affects more than ITVX and cannot overcome a platform that ITV does not support. On Samsung, resetting Smart Hub may sign you out of apps and remove Smart Hub settings; app installation and account setup may need to be repeated, and the menu or PIN varies by model. On LG, a network or TV reset can mean reconnecting Wi-Fi and reconfiguring settings. On Sony, check compatibility and update software before considering a factory reset. If the built-in platform is unsupported or remains unreliable, check ITV’s current compatibility list before choosing an external streaming device, console, casting route or YouView device; support depends on the exact device and platform.
What to send ITV or the TV maker if the fault remains
Before contacting support, note the TV make and exact model, software version, ITVX version if visible, and any error message or code. Record whether the failure affects live TV, on-demand or both; whether one title or all titles fail; whether other TV apps work; and whether ITVX works on another device or a phone hotspot. Include the fixes you have already tried. ITV’s playback support page explains the content and playback details useful when reporting a problem. For TV-specific menus or firmware, contact the maker using the model information.

When the built-in app is not a practical option
If ITVX is not listed for the exact television platform, or the TV can no longer receive the software it needs, a supported external streaming device or another listed platform may be the more practical route. Check ITV’s platform compatibility list for the exact device before relying on it. No particular device or price is established here, and an external option is an alternative rather than proof that the television itself is defective.
