There is no objective “best anime” for any studio: each has a catalog that spans different stories, formats, and eras. This guide offers one accessible, representative starting point from each of 11 studios, selected for recognition and usefulness to a new viewer—not as a definitive ranking. The entries are not ordered from best to worst.
How to choose a studio’s anime
Start with the format and commitment you want. A film is a contained introduction; a television series offers more time with its characters, and a long-running franchise asks for a much larger investment. Genre, tone, and visual approach matter just as much as the studio name. A studio’s catalog is not a single style or a guarantee that every work will feel alike.
Production credits can also be more specific than a company label suggests, and names change over time. The picks below identify a useful place to begin, not a claim that every title represents all of a studio’s work.
11 anime studios and a starting recommendation from each
1. Studio Ghibli — Spirited Away
Spirited Away is a feature film and a strong entry point if you want an imaginative, self-contained story rather than a series commitment. It sits within a broad film catalog that also includes My Neighbor Totoro and The Boy and the Heron (2023). If you prefer a gentler starting mood, consider My Neighbor Totoro. Studio Ghibli’s official works catalog lists its films.
#1 Best Overall
2. Madhouse — Perfect Blue
This feature film is a tense psychological thriller, suited to viewers who want something unsettling and compact rather than a long adventure. Madhouse’s catalog also includes series and films such as Death Note, Paprika, Hunter × Hunter, One Punch Man, and Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End; the range makes clear that one pick cannot stand for the whole studio. Madhouse’s official company profile lists these works.
3. Kyoto Animation — Violet Evergarden
Begin with the 2018 television and streaming series if you want an emotionally focused character drama with a polished visual presentation. A 2020 movie continues its story. For a different mood and a series centered on music and friendship, try K-ON!; Sound! Euphonium is another option in the studio’s catalog. Kyoto Animation’s official works list includes the series and movie.
Rank #2
4. Toei Animation — One Piece
Choose One Piece if you want an expansive, ongoing-feeling adventure and are comfortable with a substantial episode commitment. It is a series, not a quick sample of the studio. Toei Animation Europe identifies it as one of the studio’s flagship titles, alongside Dragon Ball and Sailor Moon. If you want a different franchise entry point, either of those may suit you better. Toei Animation Europe’s company page describes its flagship titles and licensing activities.
5. Sunrise / Bandai Namco Filmworks — Cowboy Bebop
Cowboy Bebop is a television series with a stylish, episodic science-fiction approach, making it a useful pick if you want a more contained run than a sprawling franchise. Sunrise’s official history records the title and notes that the company name changed to Bandai Namco Filmworks Inc. after a merger. “Sunrise” remains relevant as a brand label, but company and production credits should not be treated as interchangeable. Sunrise’s official history explains the name change.

6. Science SARU — The Night Is Short, Walk On Girl
This 2017 film suits viewers looking for a playful, surreal feature rather than a conventional long-form series. Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs discusses the film in its profile of the studio and reports that it received the Grand Prize for Best Animated Feature at the 2017 Ottawa International Animation Festival. The feature also links Science SARU with director Masaaki Yuasa. The Agency for Cultural Affairs’ studio feature provides that context.
7. Production I.G — A Letter to Momo
Try this feature if you want a film-length introduction rather than a series. Production I.G’s official company page documents the film’s festival appearances and awards. The studio has a wider catalog, so this is a starting recommendation, not a claim that it defines the studio’s output. Production I.G’s “About Us” page provides information about the film.
Rank #4
8. ufotable — Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba
This series is a natural first choice if you want action and a continuing story built around a major franchise. ufotable features Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba among its works. Choose another entry here if you would rather start with a self-contained film or a less action-centered story. ufotable’s official English site lists the franchise.
9. MAPPA — Chainsaw Man
Choose this series if you are drawn to dark, eccentric action and a more abrasive tone. It is one option within a varied studio catalog, not a template for every MAPPA production: the company describes an ambition to work across genres rather than focus on one particular style. Its stated vision is “Delivering anime that will always remain in the hearts of viewers.” MAPPA’s works catalog lists titles, while its company page provides its vision and company context.
Best Value
10. Bones — Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
This television series is a good starting point if you want a large-scale fantasy adventure with a developed story rather than a film. The recommendation is editorial; the sources cited for this guide do not establish a primary studio credit for the title, so check the anime’s own credits if confirming production attribution is important to your choice.
11. Wit Studio — Attack on Titan
Try this series if you want high-stakes action and are ready for a longer narrative commitment. As with the Bones entry, this is a recommendation rather than a definitive studio ranking; the sources cited here do not establish a primary Wit Studio credit for the title. Consult the title’s credits if you need to verify which studio handled a particular season or production.
