If an Instagram video starts when you tap it but stays still as you scroll, you have an autoplay problem. If it also freezes, shows a spinner or black screen after you tap, troubleshoot playback or the connection instead.
Start with that tap test, then work through the least disruptive fixes first. Instagram’s autoplay controls and labels can vary by app version, account and rollout, so a missing setting does not necessarily mean you missed it.
First, identify what is failing

Instagram video behavior is not one single feature: inline Feed and Reel playback, Stories, sound, and video embedded in a browser can each behave differently. A video that begins silently is still playing; muted autoplay is common.

1. Look for Instagram’s autoplay and media-preview controls
Instagram does not expose one confirmed, universal autoplay switch in every app build. If videos play on tap, first look for a setting that controls autoplay or media previews:

- Open Instagram and tap your profile picture.
- Tap the three-line menu, then open Settings and privacy.
- Use settings search for autoplay, video autoplay, data usage or media previews. If there is no search, look in sections such as Accessibility, display and languages, Data usage, or Display and sound.
- If your version offers a video autoplay or media-preview control, enable it, close Instagram, reopen it and test several videos.
Those labels and locations are reported in recent coverage, but may differ by account, language, operating system and rollout. Meta confirms Instagram has a Use less data feature, but its public help page does not establish a complete, stable autoplay-menu path. If the control is absent, move on rather than repeatedly searching menus.
2. Temporarily turn off Instagram’s data-saving option
In Settings and privacy, look for Data usage, Media quality, Use less data or a similarly named option. Temporarily disable the data-saving control, then close and reopen Instagram and test on reliable Wi-Fi.
Data saving may limit preloading, reduce video quality or delay playback; it does not always disable autoplay. If this test restores automatic playback, decide whether you prefer the convenience or the data savings, and turn the option back on if conserving data matters more. The feature is documented for Instagram on iPhone and Android, not as a universal desktop setting.

On iOS 13 and later, Low Data Mode reduces background network use and streaming quality and can turn off some automatic downloads and autoplay behaviors in Apple apps. It can be enabled separately for cellular and Wi-Fi, so check the network where Instagram is failing. Apple’s names differ by region and iOS version.

- Cellular: Open Settings → Cellular (or Mobile Data) → Cellular Data Options (or Mobile Data Options) → Data Mode, then select Standard.
- Wi-Fi: Open Settings → Wi-Fi, tap the information button beside the connected network and turn Low Data Mode off.
If you use dual SIM, check the line currently providing cellular data. Change one network’s setting at a time and test Instagram on that connection. Apple documents the behavior and options in its Low Data Mode guidance and its iPhone cellular data controls.
4. Check Android Data Saver and Instagram’s data access
Android settings vary by version and manufacturer, so the labels on a Samsung, Pixel, Motorola or OnePlus phone may not match exactly. Look under Settings → Network & internet or Connections for Data Saver or Data usage. Turn Data Saver off temporarily, or allow Instagram unrestricted data access if that option is available.
Also open Instagram’s app information and check its mobile-data and background-data permissions. Background-data access can help with preloading, but it does not by itself control foreground autoplay. Test both Wi-Fi and mobile data after changing the setting. Google notes that Android controls differ across devices and documents Data Saver and background data as well as app-specific data controls on Pixel.
5. Compare Wi-Fi with mobile data
Meta recommends testing Instagram on both Wi-Fi and mobile data when videos will not load. Switch networks and try a short Reel, a Feed video and a Story. If possible, try a different Wi-Fi network rather than relying only on the same router.

- Switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data and test.
- Switch from mobile data to another Wi-Fi network and test.
- If appropriate, turn Airplane Mode on for about 10 seconds, then turn it off and reconnect.
- If other video services also struggle on your Wi-Fi, restart the router.
A connection can handle ordinary browsing yet still be unstable for video because of congestion, signal changes, network restrictions or a captive portal. There is no universal minimum speed threshold for Instagram autoplay established here, so a speed test alone cannot rule out a network problem. 6. Temporarily test battery-saving modes
As a diagnostic experiment, turn off Low Power Mode on iPhone or Battery Saver on Android, and check whether Instagram has an app-specific background restriction. Reopen Instagram and test again, then restore your preferred battery settings.
Battery-saving modes can limit background activity, but the available guidance does not establish that they universally disable Instagram autoplay. Treat this as a way to isolate a possible restriction, not a guaranteed fix.

- Install any Instagram update available in the App Store or Google Play.
- Check for a pending iOS or Android update.
- Restart the phone, open Instagram and test before changing more settings.
Meta recommends using the latest available app and device software as part of troubleshooting. Updates can fix playback problems, but a newly introduced bug is also possible. If the issue began immediately after an update, note the Instagram app version and operating-system version before reporting it.

8. Force-close Instagram and clear Android’s app cache
Force-close Instagram, reopen it and test. If you have Android and the problem continues, clear only the temporary cache first:
- Open Settings → Apps → Instagram → Storage (the labels may vary).
- Tap Clear cache, then reopen Instagram and test.
Clearing a cache can remove problematic temporary data, but it is not a guaranteed fix. Avoid unofficial “Instagram cleaner” apps. On Android, Clear storage or Clear data is more disruptive: it can sign you out and remove local app state. Use it only if you are ready to log in again.
9. Reinstall only after protecting drafts and account access
If restarting, connection tests and updates have not helped, reinstalling is a later option recommended by Meta. Before doing so, confirm you know your password and can access the email address or phone number on the account, your two-factor authentication method and any backup codes. Save any locally stored Reel or Story drafts you need: drafts may be lost when the app is removed.

- iPhone: Force-close Instagram and restart the phone first. To remove and reinstall it, use Settings → General → iPhone Storage → Instagram and choose Offload App if available, or delete the app and reinstall from the App Store. Offloading and deleting are not the same operation; if you need a clean reinstall, deletion is the more complete removal.
- Android: Reinstall Instagram from Google Play if clearing the cache and updating did not help. If you use Clear storage/data instead, expect to sign in again.
Instagram-hosted posts and profile information are associated with your account, but local drafts and login state may not survive removal. Meta’s troubleshooting steps include uninstalling and reinstalling the app.

10. Test the browser, another device or another account
If you use Instagram in Chrome, Safari, Edge or Firefox, troubleshoot that browser separately. Update it, try a private window or another browser, temporarily disable extensions that block scripts or media, and clear Instagram’s site data or cookies. Check the browser’s site permissions too: autoplay rules can depend on the browser, sound state and whether you have interacted with the page. Muted inline video may be allowed while audible autoplay is blocked.
Meta’s general browser-video troubleshooting recommends steps such as updating the browser, checking the connection and restarting the computer; it is not a guarantee of a specific Instagram browser fix.
Then compare the same content using another Instagram account or device, if available. These checks help narrow the cause:

- Only one account fails on the same device: an account-specific setting, feature rollout or bug is plausible.
- Only the browser fails: focus on browser permissions, extensions and site data.
- Multiple devices and networks fail: a broader Instagram service or account issue becomes more likely.
A missing control or an isolated feature failure can reflect a rollout difference or a bug, not a mistake. If videos still fail after the relevant checks, report the problem through Instagram’s in-app help/reporting flow. Include what happens when you tap, which surfaces are affected, the networks and devices tested, and the app and OS versions. Meta notes that features may not be available to everyone and recommends reporting persistent problems in its Instagram troubleshooting guidance.
