The code does not identify whether the cause is Hulu’s service, your account, device, browser, network, or the particular title. Start by trying another video and fully closing Hulu; then work through the least disruptive fixes below.
Before troubleshooting: find out how broad the failure is
Hulu’s public Help Center does not publish a unique technical definition for RUNUNK13. It can appear when starting, resuming, or switching videos, but those are reported patterns rather than an official specification. Secondary guides commonly associate it with playback, cache, software, and connection problems, but none proves a single cause (Beebom; Online Tech Tips).
| Test | What the result suggests |
|---|---|
| Try two or three different titles | Only one failed title may indicate a title, episode, entitlement, or metadata problem. |
| Try another device on the same network | Failure on one device points toward that app, browser, or hardware. |
| Try another network, such as cellular data | Working elsewhere implicates the original Wi-Fi, router, DNS, filtering, or ISP path. |
| Check Hulu Help Center and support channels | Failure across devices and networks may be a Hulu-side or account-wide issue. Hulu lists support options, including 24/7 live support, at help.hulu.com. |
Do not repeatedly factory-reset a TV, streaming stick, or console before these checks. Hulu’s current hardware and software support varies by platform; verify your model on the supported-devices page and review the unsupported-device guidance.
10 fixes, from fastest to most disruptive
1. Retry the video and test another title
- Exit the error screen.
- Open the same title again.
- Try a different episode or movie.
- If available, start from the title page instead of Continue Watching.
This can clear a transient playback state and tells you whether one title is affected. It is a diagnostic, not a guaranteed RUNUNK13 fix.

2. Fully close Hulu
Pressing Home or switching apps may leave Hulu running. Terminate it with your platform’s app controls, then reopen it. On Android, swipe Hulu from recent apps or use Force stop. On Fire TV, use Settings → Applications → Manage Installed Applications → Hulu → Force Stop. On iPhone or iPad, open the app switcher and swipe Hulu away. On a browser, close the Hulu tab or window and open a new session. Smart-TV and console labels differ; Hulu’s dedicated instructions are at Fully close Hulu.
3. Restart the device
- Close Hulu.
- Restart the phone, tablet, computer, TV, streaming stick, or console itself.
- Wait for startup to finish, then test Hulu.
A restart clears temporary memory and stalled app processes without deleting account data.
4. Power-cycle the modem and router
- Close Hulu on affected devices.
- Unplug the modem and router, or switch them off.
- Wait about 60 seconds.
- Reconnect the modem first and wait for internet service.
- Reconnect the separate router, then test Hulu.
Do not interrupt a firmware update. Hulu includes power-cycling in its buffering troubleshooting. If only Hulu fails while other services work, the router may not be the root cause.
5. Remove VPN, proxy, extension, and filtering interference
Temporarily disable VPNs, proxies, ad-blocking DNS, network-wide filters, and browser extensions that block scripts, cookies, ads, or media. Corporate, school, hotel, and public Wi-Fi can also restrict streaming.

- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
- Open Hulu in a private/incognito window.
- Disable extensions if necessary.
- Sign in and test playback.
- If it works, re-enable extensions one at a time.
Also test another Wi-Fi network or cellular data. Hulu’s buffering guidance discusses anonymous-proxy errors and related troubleshooting (Hulu). Do not buy or enable a VPN as a fix; proxy routing can create playback problems.
6. Update Hulu and system software
- Check the device’s app store for a Hulu update.
- Check for operating-system, smart-TV, streaming-stick, or console updates.
- Update the web browser through its About or Settings page.
- Restart after installing updates and test again.
Hulu surfaces app and system updates as a troubleshooting step at its Help Center. No particular version is publicly documented as an RUNUNK13-specific cure.
7. Clear browser cache or Hulu site data
This applies to browser playback. Start with cached files, then clear Hulu-specific cookies or site data if needed.
- Close Hulu tabs.
- Clear cached images and files.
- Reopen the browser and sign in if requested.
- If playback still fails, clear Hulu’s cookies/site data and test again.
Cache clearing is usually less disruptive. Cookies or site data can sign you out and remove preferences. Hulu’s instructions are at Clear browser cache.

8. Clear Hulu app cache or data
Use this only where the platform exposes storage controls; menu names vary.
- Android: Settings → Apps → Hulu → Storage or Storage & cache → Clear cache.
- Fire TV: Settings → Applications → Manage Installed Applications → Hulu → Force Stop → Clear Cache.
If clearing cache fails, Clear storage, Clear data, or the platform equivalent removes local data and normally signs you out. Hulu lists cache and data clearing among its troubleshooting topics at help.hulu.com. Do not assume Android paths apply to iPhone, Roku, or every smart TV.
9. Sign out, reinstall Hulu, and sign back in
- Sign out of Hulu.
- Restart the device.
- Uninstall Hulu, or use the platform’s reinstall-equivalent option.
- Restart again if the platform recommends it.
- Install Hulu from the official app store and sign in.
Have your login details ready. Reinstallation can remove offline downloads, require device activation, and restore profile settings. It cannot repair a Hulu-wide outage.
10. Test another supported platform and contact Hulu
Compare the same account, title, and network on another supported device or browser. If RUNUNK13 persists across multiple supported devices, titles, or networks, stop repeating local resets and contact Hulu through the Help Center.

Device-specific branches
Browser only
Use a private window, disable extensions, update the browser, clear Hulu site data, and test another supported browser. If Hulu works in another browser on the same connection, the internet connection is not the primary suspect.
Android phone, tablet, Fire TV, or Google TV
Fully stop Hulu, restart the device, clear cache, update the app and system, then clear app data or reinstall if necessary. Clearing data signs you out.
iPhone or iPad
Swipe Hulu away in the app switcher, restart iOS or iPadOS, update Hulu and the operating system, then reinstall if the problem continues. iOS does not provide the same general-purpose clear-cache menu as Android.
Smart TV, Roku, or game console
Use the platform’s quit or close control, restart the hardware, check Hulu and firmware updates, and use its cache-clear or reinstall-equivalent option where available. Confirm continued support for the exact model at Hulu’s supported-devices page.

Special cases
Only one show or episode fails
Try another episode, another title, and the same episode on another device. Record the exact title and episode for Hulu; do not assume a full device reset is warranted.
The error appears after an advertisement, seeking, resuming, or casting
User reports describe these patterns, but they do not establish a universal technical cause (Reddit report; Hulu support thread). Restart playback, allow an advertisement to finish instead of repeatedly seeking through it, test another device, and sign out and back in. Claims about a specific “pre-roll handshake,” kernel failure, or DNS flush are not confirmed by Hulu.
When to contact Hulu
Contact support when multiple supported devices and titles fail, the same account fails on more than one network, or the problem began after an account, subscription, or device change. Provide:
- RUNUNK13 and the exact title and episode.
- Device make and model, operating-system version, and Hulu app or browser version.
- Whether other titles and devices work.
- Whether another network works.
- The approximate date and time of each failure.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does clearing cache delete my Hulu subscription?
No. Clearing a browser cache or app cache does not cancel your subscription, although clearing cookies, site data, or app storage can sign you out.
Will reinstalling Hulu cancel my subscription?
No. Reinstalling removes the local app and may remove downloads or activation data; it does not cancel billing.
Should I change DNS to fix RUNUNK13?
Not as a default step. DNS changes may help a narrowly scoped network-resolution problem, but Hulu has not established them as a RUNUNK13 remedy.
