Rey Mysterio’s story includes a teenage wrestling license, an early leap into Mexico’s AAA promotion and tattoos that tie his ring persona to his hometown and family. Here are 10 lesser-known details, with Mysterio’s recollections distinguished from WWE’s official career records.
1. His ring name is a tribute to his uncle
WWE says Mysterio adopted the name Rey Mysterio in honor of his uncle, the original Rey Mysterio. WWE’s official profile also says he learned lucha libre before he was old enough to drive.
2. His uncle was among the people who trained him
In a 2006 interview with WWE, Mysterio recalled watching wrestling tapes and training with his uncle and other Mexican wrestlers. He described an early commitment that left little room for a backup plan: “From Day One, my mind was set on one thing — being a professional wrestler.” The account is his recollection, published in WWE’s interview about his early career.
3. He took Mexico’s wrestling-license test at 15
Mysterio said that Mexico required wrestlers to obtain a license and that the usual minimum age was 18. He recalled taking the test at 15; after the commission raised the age issue, his parents signed a waiver. This detail comes from his 2006 interview, not an independently documented account of the licensing rules.

Asked about the 619 tattoo, Mysterio said, “It represents what I do and where I come from; it’s a big significance for me.” WWE lists the 619 and West Coast Pop among his signature moves, but this interview does not explain the move’s full origin story. The tattoo explanation comes from his 2007 WWE interview about his tattoos.
7. His tattoos express family ties and cultural pride
In the same 2007 interview, Mysterio said his tattoos include his wife’s name and his children’s names.
