Science fiction’s best armor ranges from close-fitting protective suits to powered exoskeletons and operator-controlled machines. Jamie Sawyer’s 2017 selection offers ten memorable examples, but it is one writer’s lineup—not an official ranking or a measure of popularity. Real wearable robotics can assist with specific tasks; it is still a long way from an all-purpose, armored suit that can fly, fight, and keep its wearer alive anywhere.
What counts as sci-fi armor?
The phrase covers several different designs. Some are armor worn directly on the body; some add powered assistance to the wearer’s movements; others are large machines operated from inside. Their fictional capabilities also vary: protection, strength, mobility, environmental support, or integrated weapons and tools. The entries below follow Sawyer’s 2017 list in its original order, with the machine-like examples identified as such.
Ten memorable pieces of sci-fi armor
1. Elysium exoskeleton
Sawyer’s list describes the suit in Elysium as bolted to its wearer and designed to improve strength and stamina. It feels comparatively close to real exoskeleton research because its premise is physical assistance rather than effortless flight or invulnerability. That resemblance is an imaginative comparison, not a technical assessment: real devices remain much more limited in task and capability.
2. District 9 exosuit
The alien-made suit in District 9 combines strength augmentation with built-in weapons. Its appeal comes from treating powered armor as a platform for both the wearer and combat systems—not merely a protective shell. That package is far beyond what current wearable robotics can provide.

3. Halo MJOLNIR armor
The Spartan armor in Halo is a classic powered-assault-suit design. Sawyer highlights its strength augmentation and spacesuit-like function, pairing battlefield protection with support for operating in hostile environments. It is the kind of fiction in which armor is also a life-support system and a force multiplier.
4. Warhammer 40,000 Space Marine power armor
Space Marine armor is central to the look and fictional technology of Warhammer 40,000. In Sawyer’s account, it supports the wearer’s strength and provides life support. The combination makes the armor more than a defensive layer: it is part of how its wearer can function in extreme conditions and carry out combat duties.
5. Aliens Power Loader
The Power Loader from Aliens is best understood as a powered industrial loader operated by a human, not as body armor. The story famously turns the machine to an unintended combat use, which is part of its appeal. Its real-world analogue is closer to heavy equipment and human-machine operation than to a close-fitting exosuit.

6. Avatar AMP suit
The AMP suit in Avatar is a militarized platform controlled by an operator. Sawyer’s selection emphasizes its environmental protection, but its scale and cockpit-like operation separate it from wearable armor. It is a piloted machine that surrounds and assists a person, rather than armor fitted directly to the body.
7. The Matrix Armoured Personnel Unit
The Armoured Personnel Unit in The Matrix is another large mechanized platform, used in the defense of Zion in Sawyer’s description. It belongs in a broad sci-fi armor list because it protects and equips a human operator, but it is not a close-fitting suit or a wearable exoskeleton.
8. Edge of Tomorrow combat jacket
The combat suit in Edge of Tomorrow is a powered, combat-oriented design with integrated weapons in Sawyer’s account. It imagines armor as a way to combine the soldier, mobility assistance, and battlefield equipment into one system.

9. The Forever War fighting suit
The fighting suit in Joe Haldeman’s The Forever War stands out for the breadth of its support functions. Sawyer emphasizes long-duration life support, camouflage, and medical or trauma-management features. It is a reminder that the most useful fictional armor may be defined as much by keeping a wearer alive as by helping them fight.
10. Starship Troopers power armor
Sawyer characterizes Starship Troopers power armor as a landmark military-science-fiction design, with strength assistance and battlefield mobility features. Its influence in the genre comes from presenting the armored soldier as a mobile, augmented combat system rather than an infantry member wearing only passive protection.

What real wearable robotics can do—and why sci-fi remains ahead
NASA’s X1 was research hardware, not superhero armor
In a 2013 account, NASA described the X1 as a 57-pound wearable robotic exoskeleton worn over the legs and harnessed around the back and shoulders. It had 10 degrees of freedom: four motorized joints at the hips and knees, plus six passive joints. NASA discussed resistance exercise for astronauts and possible mobility-assistance research on Earth. Those are historical project details, not a statement about the device’s current deployment status. NASA explicitly noted that X1 could not do what movie Iron Man does. NASA’s X1 overview
The broader field is active, but focused. A peer-reviewed review of wearable soft robotic suits examines actuation, physical interfaces between people and robots, and systems for detecting a wearer’s intentions. It describes research into human motor assistance and augmentation, along with limitations and open questions. That supports a more grounded picture: wearable robots may help with particular movements or tasks, but an armored, self-powered, all-purpose combat suit is a substantially different engineering challenge. More strength can mean more machine to carry
GE’s historical account of its 1960s Hardiman experimental prototype illustrates the trade-off. GE says the design aimed to let a user lift up to 1,500 pounds; the suit itself weighed 1,500 pounds and had 28 joints. The project did not advance beyond an experimental prototype because of problems including size, weight, instability, and power supply. These figures are GE’s retrospective account, not an independently replicated performance result. GE’s history of Hardiman

Power and integration remain hard problems
A 2014 U.S. Army account of the TALOS concept described a proposed system combining armor, sensors, health monitoring, and an exoskeleton. It reported that contemporary batteries could not supply the power required for the suit’s systems and noted that TALOS was not expected to fly. This was a development-era description of plans and requirements, not evidence that a fielded suit resulted. U.S. Army account of TALOS
The engineering problem is not simply to make a motor strong enough to move a limb. A wearable system must also carry its power source, fit and move with a person, remain stable, and coordinate safely with the wearer. Adding armor, sensors, life support, and weapons increases the demands on the same system. The research review and the historical examples show why a device that assists a specific movement is a more grounded prospect than a self-contained cinematic suit.
Why Mandalorian armor is a popular alternate
Star Wars’ Mandalorian armor is a defensible alternate for readers who want a recognizable screen design, though it is not part of Sawyer’s ten. StarWars.com discusses its practical and cultural significance in the fictional setting and its association with beskar. Those capabilities belong to Star Wars lore, not real materials science. Why the real-world comparison matters
NASA’s 2013 article placed robotics in the context of human spaceflight. Michael Gazarik, then director of NASA’s Space Technology Program, said: “Robotics is playing a key role aboard the International Space Station and will continue to be critical as we move toward human exploration of deep space,” NASA’s 2013 X1 article. That outlook is less cinematic than powered armor, but it captures the practical ambition: develop robotic systems to support people in demanding environments and tasks.
