10 Most Important Black Mirror Episodes, Ranked

These ten Black Mirror installments show how the anthology ranges from social satire and horror to romance and interactive storytelling.

There is no official ranking of the most important Black Mirror episodes. This list is an editorial judgment, weighing how strongly each installment defines the anthology, expands its storytelling, or keeps its questions about technology and society alive. The series moves between genres and tones, so the choices below include romance, satire, horror, interactive storytelling, and science fiction—not just cautionary tales about gadgets.

If you’re asking which Black Mirror episodes to watch first, these ten offer a strong map of what the show can do. The ranking is not a poll or a claim of universal consensus.

10. “Fifteen Million Merits” (Season 1, Episode 2)

One of the first episodes to show how Black Mirror can make a media system part of its characters’ everyday reality, “Fifteen Million Merits” imagines a world where people earn merits through labor and spend them on entertainment and escape. Its dystopia is about more than technology: it asks what happens when attention, ambition, and dissent are all packaged as spectacle.

It also helps establish the show’s early range beyond the premise of its opening episode. Charlie Brooker’s 2025 Q&A identifies Konnie Huq as a co-writer, a useful reminder that the series’ writing was not solely Brooker’s work.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

9. “Be Right Back” (Season 2, Episode 1)

In a quieter register than many entries on this list, “Be Right Back” turns grief into a question about digital traces. A bereaved woman encounters an AI imitation built from the online presence of the person she lost. The episode’s emotional force comes from the gap between the version of someone that can be reconstructed from their data and the person they were.

That intimate focus broadens the show’s idea of technological harm: the consequences need not be a social collapse or public spectacle. They can unfold in private, inside an attempt to keep mourning at bay.

8. “White Christmas” (2014 special)

“White Christmas” is a feature-length special, not a standard season episode. Its interlocking stories bring several speculative technologies into one structure, using a frame narrative to connect ideas that might otherwise stand alone. Netflix’s episode description also notes nods to installments from the first two series.

It is an important example of how Black Mirror can create connections across its anthology without giving up its rotating characters and premises. The result feels cumulative, but each story still has its own moral and emotional problem.

7. “White Bear” (Season 2, Episode 2)

“White Bear” begins as a disorienting thriller: a woman wakes with amnesia while strangers silently record her and refuse to help. The setup makes the viewer share her uncertainty while putting the crowd’s behavior on display.

TIME has highlighted the episode’s question about watching suffering for entertainment. Its place on this list rests on that focus on spectatorship and punishment, as well as the way it uses suspense to make the audience reconsider what it has been watching. The episode’s reversal is best encountered without advance explanation.

6. “The Entire History of You” (Season 1, Episode 3)

In “The Entire History of You,” a device that records and replays memories gives a familiar relationship insecurity a technological outlet. The ability to revisit moments does not settle doubt; it supplies more material for suspicion and self-inflicted damage. The episode’s compact premise shows how Black Mirror can make a speculative tool feel like an extension of an ordinary human impulse.

It is also a notable early writing credit: Jesse Armstrong wrote the episode, an exception to Brooker’s usual role as the series’ writer.

5. “Bandersnatch” (interactive film, 2018)

Black Mirror: Bandersnatch is an interactive film, not a numbered regular episode. Viewers make choices that shape the story, so the format is part of the subject: the audience is not merely watching a character confront control and consequence, but repeatedly making decisions within the narrative.

The Guardian praised its ambition in introducing a new storytelling form, while WIRED noted that the novelty divides opinion. Whether or not the branching experience works equally well for every viewer, it is among the series’ most formally distinctive installments. Its Emmy win also made it part of a three-year run of Black Mirror victories for Outstanding Television Movie.

4. “USS Callister” (Season 4, Episode 1)

“USS Callister” borrows the look and scale of a space-opera adventure to tell a story about power, abuse, and toxic fandom. Its protagonist uses a private simulation to put digital copies of his co-workers under his control. The bright genre surface makes the question of who gets to define “play” especially sharp.

Charlie Brooker later described the crew as “virtual clones, but they’re effectively humans in a video game,” in a Netflix Tudum interview published April 10, 2025. That idea underpins the episode’s ethical stakes: what seems like a private fantasy to one person is lived as reality by the people inside it.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

The story gained unusual continued relevance with Netflix’s 2025 sequel, “USS Callister: Into Infinity,” which Netflix identifies as the first Black Mirror sequel episode. “USS Callister” also won the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Television Movie, following “San Junipero” and preceding Bandersnatch.

3. “The National Anthem” (Season 1, Episode 1)

The series opens with a deliberately abrasive thought experiment: technology and mass media turn public pressure into a grotesque moral spectacle. Rather than easing viewers into the anthology, “The National Anthem” announces that Black Mirror will use provocative premises to examine how attention, politics, and collective judgment can collide.

WIRED describes it as the episode that set the tone. That does not make it the right first recommendation for every viewer; its provocation is part of its design, and it is far harsher than the show’s range as a whole.

2. “Nosedive” (Season 3, Episode 1)

“Nosedive” turns social rating into a whole system of status and access. Every interaction can affect a person’s score, and that score shapes the opportunities available to them. Netflix’s guide connects the premise to influencer culture and social media, but the episode’s sharpest move is to imagine those familiar pressures as infrastructure rather than background noise.

That clarity makes it one of the anthology’s most legible ideas: a recognizable social habit becomes the organizing rule for an entire society. It remains a strong starting point for viewers interested in how the series builds a world around a behavior people already know.

1. “San Junipero” (Season 3, Episode 4)

“San Junipero” is the clearest case for why “important” should not mean “most bleak.” The episode is a romance with an unusually hopeful ending, yet its technology does not remove the series’ questions about mortality and what it means to continue existing. TIME calls it remarkably uplifting; Netflix describes it as the show’s first happy ending.

Its tonal departure is not an exception to Black Mirror so much as evidence of its range. The episode won the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Television Movie in 2017, the first of three consecutive wins for the series, followed by “USS Callister” in 2018 and Bandersnatch in 2019. Those awards recognize critical and industry attention; they do not turn this editorial order into an objective verdict.

Why these ten matter together

Black Mirror is an anthology: characters, settings, casts, and genres change, while the recurring concern is how media and technology shape society. TIME’s 2025 overview emphasizes that variety, and WIRED describes the series’ interest in technology’s unintended effects. The episodes above illustrate several distinct approaches: a social system built around ratings, an intimate story of grief, a public spectacle, a digital world treated as real by its inhabitants, and a narrative that gives viewers choices.

Other critics rank the show differently. TIME’s 2025 overview is chronological rather than a numbered ranking, while WIRED and The Guardian offer their own priorities and judgments. This list is a synthesis of historical role, formal innovation, tonal range, recognition, and continuing relevance—not a measured consensus about the “best” episodes.
