Some sequels arrive decades after their originals; others make audiences wait long enough for the characters to grow up. The films below pair a substantial release gap with a distinct payoff in emotion, craft, or storytelling. “Long-awaited” is a judgment, not a fixed threshold: this list uses theatrical release years and includes follow-ups with a clear case beyond the time they took to arrive.
How these sequels earned their place
A long gap alone does not make a sequel successful. These picks have a separate reason to revisit their worlds: they deepen a character or theme, deliver a meaningful emotional conclusion, or expand the original’s cinematic craft. Release gaps below are counted by theatrical release year. Rotten Tomatoes scores are dated snapshots, not permanent measures of quality.
Ten sequels that made the wait count
1. Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)
Wait: 29 years after Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985). Rotten Tomatoes’ 2018 list reported Tomatometer scores of 81% for the earlier film and 97% for Fury Road at the time. The new film does not rely on nostalgia: its relentless, largely visual storytelling turns a familiar wasteland into a kinetic action epic, with Furiosa emerging as a forceful co-lead. SYFY WIRE describes the project’s protracted path from George Miller’s 1987 idea through repeated delays to production in July 2012, and calls the result one of the rare sequels worth the wait. Read SYFY WIRE’s account of the long development.
2. Toy Story 3 (2010)
Wait: 11 years after Toy Story 2 (1999). The toys’ place in Andy’s life has changed as he grows up, giving the film a natural emotional question: what does loyalty mean when childhood ends? Rotten Tomatoes’ guide, updated March 24, 2026, listed a 98% Tomatometer score and praised its blend of comedy, adventure, and honest emotion. Fandango reports that the film won two Oscars and was 2010’s top-grossing film. Its farewell works because it follows from the characters’ history rather than treating the gap as an excuse for a reunion. See Fandango’s discussion of sequels with long waits.

3. Blade Runner 2049 (2017)
Wait: 35 years after Blade Runner (1982). A sequel to a film whose questions about identity and humanity had lingered for decades could easily have answered too much or repeated its predecessor’s mood. Blade Runner 2049 instead builds a new mystery around a new protagonist while returning to the original’s uneasy questions about memory, personhood, and power. Rotten Tomatoes included it among its Certified Fresh sequels; the cited gallery reports the 35-year gap. View the film’s Rotten Tomatoes page.
4. Before Sunset (2004)
Wait: Nine years after Before Sunrise (1995). Jesse and Céline meet again older, carrying the choices and disappointments of the years between encounters. The film makes elapsed time its central dramatic material: a conversation that once felt full of possibility now has urgency and consequence. Rotten Tomatoes’ ranked sequel guide listed it at 95% on March 24, 2026. View the film’s Rotten Tomatoes page.

5. Incredibles 2 (2018)
Wait: 14 years after The Incredibles (2004). The follow-up returns to the Parr family’s push-and-pull between domestic life and superhero work, while shifting the public-facing hero role toward Helen and leaving Bob to manage the household. That reversal gives the sequel a fresh comic engine without abandoning the family dynamic that made the first film work. Rotten Tomatoes’ guide listed it at 93% on March 24, 2026, describing it as a long-awaited follow-up that comes close to its predecessor. View the film’s Rotten Tomatoes page.
6. The Color of Money (1986)
Wait: 25 years after The Hustler (1961), according to Rotten Tomatoes’ 2018 list of long waits between sequels. Martin Scorsese’s follow-up brings back Paul Newman’s Fast Eddie Felson as an older pool hustler who encounters a gifted young player. Its appeal lies in the changed balance between mentor and protégé: the old character has experience, but experience does not guarantee control. A long gap becomes part of the story’s substance rather than a mere production statistic. View the film’s Rotten Tomatoes page.

7. Saraband (2003)
Wait: 30 years after Scenes from a Marriage (1973), as counted in Rotten Tomatoes’ 2018 sequel-gap gallery. Ingmar Bergman revisits Marianne and Johan decades later, allowing the passage of time to shape the characters’ strained intimacy and family relationships. The film’s worth is not that it recreates the earlier work’s circumstances, but that it asks what remains between people after an entire adult life has passed. View the film’s Rotten Tomatoes page.
8. Tron: Legacy (2010)
Wait: 28 years after Tron (1982), according to Rotten Tomatoes’ 2018 gallery. The follow-up brings a new generation into the Grid while retaining the original’s central appeal: a world where computer systems become a physical landscape. Its strongest case is craft and atmosphere, especially the chance to reimagine that digital arena for a later era of effects-driven filmmaking. The long interval is well documented; it should not be mistaken on its own for evidence of critical acclaim. View the film’s Rotten Tomatoes page.

9. The Godfather Part III (1990)
Wait: 16 years after The Godfather Part II (1974). Michael Corleone’s attempt to move his family into legitimacy gives the saga a final, tragic direction: power has not freed him from the past, and his efforts to secure a different future carry their own costs. It is a more divisive choice than the films above, but as a continuation of Michael’s story it offers a consequential endpoint rather than simply reopening the old conflict. View the film’s Rotten Tomatoes page.
10. Finding Dory (2016)
Wait: 13 years after Finding Nemo (2003). Dory’s memory challenges become the basis for a story about belonging, family, and the ways people build support around different needs. The sequel gives its comic, energetic lead a more personal journey while expanding the world beyond Marlin and Nemo. It earns its return by letting a supporting character’s traits drive the story, rather than making her a repeat of the first film’s sidekick. View the film’s Rotten Tomatoes page.

Why the wait can improve a sequel—and why it cannot guarantee one
Time between installments can give characters room to change and audiences time to carry the original with them. Before Sunset makes that elapsed time visible in its leads; Toy Story 3 turns a childhood’s end into the story’s emotional center. Other sequels use the interval to reinvent their visual world or revisit an older character from a new stage of life.
But the calendar is only context. Rotten Tomatoes’ 2018 gallery also identifies long gaps for films such as Saraband and Tron: Legacy; those figures establish elapsed years, not a verdict on quality. The useful question is what the sequel does with its delay: whether it changes the stakes, extends the original’s ideas, or offers a satisfying new experience.
