Brad Pitt was born in Shawnee, Oklahoma, but he says he basically grew up in Springfield, Missouri. That distinction is the key to understanding where he is from: Shawnee is his birthplace, while Springfield is his childhood hometown. His own 2007 recollection fills in the moves and family details behind that story.
Brad Pitt’s birthplace and hometown are different
The Oklahoma Historical Society identifies Shawnee, Oklahoma, as Pitt’s birthplace and says his family later moved to Springfield, Missouri. In a 2007 interview with Dotson Rader for Parade, Pitt described Springfield as the place where he “basically grew up.”
That makes “Where is Brad Pitt from?” a question with two useful answers: he was born in Shawnee, and Springfield is the hometown he associates with his childhood. The Oklahoma Historical Society’s biography provides the documented outline; Pitt’s interview with Parade adds his own account.
10 facts about Brad Pitt and his Springfield years
1. He was born in Shawnee, Oklahoma
Pitt’s birthplace was Shawnee, not Springfield. The Oklahoma Historical Society records Shawnee as the starting point in his biography, and Pitt himself opened his recollection by saying, “I was born in Shawnee, Oklahoma.”

2. His family moved several times while he was young
Pitt recalled moving from Shawnee to Tulsa, then to St. Louis, and reaching Springfield by the time he was in kindergarten. The Historical Society gives a shorter outline—Shawnee to Tulsa and then Springfield—so the intermediate St. Louis stop is best understood as a detail from Pitt’s personal recollection, not a claim that the accounts are identical.
3. He said Springfield was where he basically grew up
In the 2007 Parade interview, Pitt said of Springfield: “There I basically grew up.” The quote explains why Springfield is commonly described as his hometown despite his Oklahoma birthplace.

Pitt reflected on how leaving home changed his view of his upbringing: “I didn’t realize how interesting the place I come from is until I left home and saw how other cultures handled things differently.” He made that comment in the same 2007 interview with Dotson Rader for Parade.
