The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006)
Sean moves to Tokyo and gets drawn into drift racing in this franchise entry directed by Justin Lin. It is the most internationally familiar pick here: a studio-backed story that puts drifting and Japanese car culture at the center of its Tokyo setting. Universal’s official franchise history identifies the film as a 2006 release and lists Blu-ray and DVD formats; availability varies by edition and region.

Initial D (2005, live action)
Takumi Fujiwara makes tofu deliveries in his father’s Toyota AE86, gradually revealing a finely honed ability behind the wheel. The story’s mountain-pass races make this the clearest choice for fans of technical downhill driving rather than expressway speed. Avex describes the film as based on Shuichi Shigeno’s comic books, and Toyo Tires places the AE86 races around Mt. Akina. See Avex’s film story page and Toyo Tires’ JDM movie guide.
-
Thunderbolt (1995)
Jackie Chan plays a mechanic and part-time racer caught up in an illegal-racing crackdown. Japanese performance cars are part of the action, including an FTO pursued by an R32 GT-R and a later showdown involving a yellow Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution III. Its blend of action-comedy and car chases makes it a good pick when you want more than a straight racing drama. These plot and vehicle details are described in Toyo Tires’ guide.

-
Wangan Midnight (2009, live action)
This adaptation follows the rivalry between the Devil Z and Blackbird on the Shuto Expressway’s Bayshore Route. The midnight-blue 240Z at its center gives the film a different appeal from Initial D: its world is built around Tokyo expressway runs rather than narrow mountain roads. Toyo Tires outlines the premise and central cars in its JDM movie guide.
-
Megalopolis Expressway Trial (Shuto Kousoku Trial, 1988)
The first film in a six-film series made between 1988 and 1996, this is the starting point for a set of Japanese expressway-racing stories. Toyo Tires singles out a modified DR30 Skyline among the cars that make the original notable. It is a useful choice if you want a local Japanese production centered on high-speed expressway culture rather than an international franchise take.
-
Shuto Kousoku Trial 2
The second entry continues the expressway focus of the series. The available sources establish the six-film span but do not provide a verified individual release year or an authoritative English-language title for this installment, so check the title used by the edition you find.
-
Shuto Kousoku Trial 3
The third film offers another step through the same series world: modified cars and expressway rivalry rather than mountain-pass drifting. Individual release metadata and a definitive English title are not established in the available catalog information.

Fast & Furious 5 [Blu-ray]- The disk has English audio and subtitles.

Shuto Kousoku Trial 4
Nikkatsu’s catalog lists Shuto Kousoku Trial 4, confirming the fourth installment’s catalog title. It is a sensible next pick after the original if you want to explore the franchise in sequence. The catalog entry does not, by itself, establish broader international release naming or viewing availability.
-
Shuto Kousoku Trial 5
The fifth film is part of the six-entry run identified by Toyo Tires. Its place in the series makes it a fit for viewers who want more expressway-focused Japanese car stories, although individual metadata and a settled English release title are not confirmed here.
-
Shuto Kousoku Trial 6
The sixth film completes the series’ 1988–1996 run. As with the other later installments, treat this as a series entry to seek out by its Japanese title where necessary; a verified individual release year and consistent English title are not established by the available sources.
Which one should you watch first?
| If you want… | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Mountain roads and drifting | Initial D | The AE86 and Mt. Akina pass-racing setting are central. |
| Tokyo expressway racing | Wangan Midnight or Shuto Kousoku Trial | Both use expressway runs as their defining car-action setting. |
| Action-comedy with Japanese performance cars | Thunderbolt | Jackie Chan’s action story features an FTO, R32 GT-R, and Evo III. |
| A major international franchise entry | Tokyo Drift | It follows an American protagonist drawn into Tokyo drift racing. |
| A longer series to explore | Shuto Kousoku Trial | The six-film series spans 1988–1996; some later entries may be easier to identify by Japanese title. |
What these films show—and what they do not
Together, the picks range from the AE86 on mountain roads to modified Skylines and a 240Z on expressways, with Thunderbolt bringing Japanese sports cars into a heightened action-comedy setting. They are fictional entertainment, not guidance for safe or legal driving. These titles also should not be treated as a complete or definitive history of Japanese car culture: the selection highlights films for their cars and racing premises, not as a measure of cultural impact.
