There is no authoritative, universally agreed top ten of war movies. This editorial selection weighs filmmaking craft, historical or cultural significance, emotional force, breadth of perspective, and the depth that makes a film worth revisiting. It draws on candidates in Rotten Tomatoes’ current war-film guide and the British Film Institute’s all-time list, but neither source establishes this ranking.

“War movie” here means more than a battlefield story: the films range across civilian suffering, captivity, resistance, the Holocaust, memory, and the return to civilian life. The list is curated, not ranked as a definitive measure of greatness.

10 war movies that reward repeat viewing

1. Grave of the Fireflies (1988)

Isao Takahata’s animated film follows a teenager trying to care for his younger sibling amid the devastation of wartime Japan. Its focus is not military strategy or combat, but the fragile routines and painful consequences of civilian life. Animation gives the story a distinctive visual language without softening its subject. It is a powerful choice for viewers interested in the human cost of war beyond the front line.

2. A Man Escaped (1956)

Robert Bresson’s prison drama, based on French Resistance fighter André Devigny’s writings, builds suspense from confinement, patience, and small decisions. Rather than offering the scale of a battle film, it makes escape itself the central drama. Its disciplined form and close attention to action make it compelling on a return visit, when the tension comes as much from how the story is told as from what happens.

3. Casablanca (1942)

Michael Curtiz’s wartime drama approaches conflict through romance, divided loyalties, and the choices facing people caught in a larger crisis. Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman anchor a story whose emotional stakes sit alongside the political setting. It is a reminder that a war film can be driven by character and moral choice rather than combat scenes.

4. The Battle of Algiers (1966)

Gillo Pontecorvo’s film depicts the struggle against French colonial rule in Algeria in a documentary-like style. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics’ consensus describes it as “A documentary-like depiction of a nation’s real-life efforts to expel a colonizing force.” Its subject and point of view broaden a list otherwise easily dominated by familiar World War II narratives. The formal approach invites attention to how the film presents political violence, resistance, and the people caught in them.

5. Schindler’s List (1993)

Steven Spielberg’s film is a Holocaust drama, not simply a combat movie. It confronts the persecution and mass murder of Jews during the Second World War through the story of Oskar Schindler and the people he sought to save. Its place here reflects its emotional and cultural weight, while its subject deserves to be understood on its own terms rather than folded into a general catalogue of battle stories.

6. Das Boot (1981)

Wolfgang Petersen’s film follows a German submarine patrol in the Atlantic during World War II. The confined setting makes waiting, exhaustion, and danger central to its depiction of combat. Its claustrophobic point of view offers a striking contrast with films that tell war through sweeping landscapes or large formations. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics’ consensus calls it “one of the greatest war films ever made.”

7. Waltz With Bashir (2008)

Ari Folman’s animated autobiographical film connects memory and testimony to his experience as an infantry soldier during the 1982 Lebanon war. Its animation is not a departure from the subject; it is part of how the film explores recollection and what can be remembered or recovered. It stands apart from conventional battle narratives by making the search for memory its central movement.

8. The Best Years of Our Lives (1946)

William Wyler’s drama follows three World War II veterans as they return to civilian life. Its focus on readjustment widens the frame from wartime service to what follows, including the difficult transition back into families, work, and community. It belongs on a war-film list because the consequences of war do not stop when fighting ends.

9. Come and See (1985)

Elem Klimov’s film, included in both Rotten Tomatoes’ war-film guide and the BFI’s all-time list, offers another World War II perspective beyond the familiar military epic. Its place among these selections helps balance stories of combat and resistance with a film concerned with the devastating experience of war. It is a demanding choice for viewers who want a more harrowing account rather than a reassuring or celebratory one.

10. Lawrence of Arabia (1962)

David Lean’s epic follows British officer T. E. Lawrence during World War I. Its scale and visual spectacle make it a natural counterpoint to the close, confined perspectives of films such as A Man Escaped and Das Boot. The BFI includes it on its all-time list, and its historical setting broadens the selection beyond the best-known European and Pacific theaters of World War II.

How to choose what to watch next

The strongest starting point depends on which aspect of war you want a film to examine. These distinctions are more useful than treating all ten as interchangeable entries in a single genre:

  • For civilian experience: Grave of the Fireflies centers wartime devastation’s effects on siblings; Schindler’s List addresses the Holocaust.
  • For resistance and captivity: A Man Escaped turns a prisoner’s escape into a tightly controlled suspense story; The Battle of Algiers depicts anticolonial struggle in a documentary-like mode.
  • For combat under pressure: Das Boot confines its perspective to a submarine patrol, while Lawrence of Arabia offers epic scale and a World War I setting.
  • For memory and life after war: Waltz With Bashir uses animation to explore recollection; The Best Years of Our Lives follows veterans’ return to civilian life.
  • For a classic wartime drama: Casablanca places romance and moral choice against a wartime backdrop.

These are recommendations about each film’s subject and approach, not claims that one kind of war story is more important than another. The BFI notes that voters in its Sight and Sound poll could interpret greatness through historical importance, aesthetic achievement, or personal impact. The 2022 poll incorporated top-ten lists from more than 1,600 participants and received votes for more than 4,000 films overall; it was not a war-film ranking. Rotten Tomatoes’ guide is a more directly relevant candidate pool, but its ordering places Certified Fresh films first and does not make the selection above an objective verdict.

Rewatching and collecting the films

These films reward revisiting for different reasons: visual form, character, ethical questions, historical context, or the contrast between a first impression and later reflection. If you are looking for war movies on Blu-ray or DVD, confirm the specific title, edition, region compatibility, and current stock before buying; availability and formats vary, and no particular edition is established here.
