Apple Music is the best all-around offline music app for most iPhone owners: it combines a broad catalog, native iPhone integration, downloadable albums and playlists, lyrics and lossless audio. Spotify Premium is better for discovery and cross-platform playlists; YouTube Music Premium is better for live versions, remixes and covers; VLC and Evermusic are better when you already own the files and want playback without a streaming subscription.
That distinction matters. Streaming downloads are usually encrypted, app-controlled copies—not MP3 files you can move to Files, VLC or another service. Purchased tracks and music you supply yourself are separate categories.

1. Apple Music — best overall for iPhone
Why it ranks first
Apple Music offers downloadable albums, songs and playlists, lyrics, Apple-device integration and lossless audio support. Apple lists a U.S. student plan at $6.99 per month; billing prices can differ by plan, tax and channel. See the official Apple Music page.

How offline downloads work
- Open Music.
- Add a song, album or playlist to your library.
- Tap the download icon.
- Check the Library’s Downloaded area before leaving Wi-Fi.
Automatic downloads are convenient but can consume storage. Lossless and hi-res settings use substantially more space, and the audible benefit depends on the recording, headphones and playback hardware. Subscription titles are licensed access; music purchased from a store is a separate, generally retainable category under the seller’s terms. Apple’s iPhone playback guidance is at Apple Support.
Who should skip it
Choose another app if you need a free mainstream offline catalog, extensive social discovery or exportable MP3 files.
2. Spotify — best for discovery and playlists
Offline rules
Spotify Premium downloads albums, playlists and podcasts. The free version currently permits podcast downloads, not music downloads. Spotify documents up to 10,000 downloaded tracks on each of up to five devices and requires the account to reconnect at least every 30 days. Read the current rules at Spotify’s offline support page.
Individual songs cannot normally be downloaded directly; put the song in a playlist first.

- Offline Mode: Profile picture → Settings and privacy → Data-saving and offline → Offline mode.
Failure recovery
Check free storage, the five-device limit, account status and app updates. Avoid reinstalling before a trip: Spotify says downloaded content must be downloaded again after reinstalling.
3. YouTube Music — best for rare versions and the YouTube ecosystem
What makes it different
YouTube Music Premium can download songs, albums, playlists, videos and podcasts. Its catalog may contain several versions of one track—official audio, a music video, live performance, remix, cover or region-specific upload—so select the exact version you want offline.

Downloads and Smart Downloads
From an album or playlist detail page, choose download. For automatic selection, use Profile picture → Settings → Downloads & storage → Smart downloads. The current iOS help page says Smart Downloads can automatically save up to 200 recently played songs. You must reconnect at least once every 30 days. Storage depends on available space, content length and quality; audio-only downloads save space compared with video. Details are in YouTube Music’s offline guide.
Podcast download behavior can differ, and some podcasts do not support audio-only downloads. A YouTube Premium membership includes YouTube Music, but its value is higher if you also use ad-free YouTube and video downloads; see YouTube Premium.
4. Amazon Music Unlimited — best for Amazon households
Amazon Music Unlimited provides a mainstream catalog with offline downloads and high-quality listening options. Do not confuse it with Prime Music: a Prime membership does not automatically provide the full Unlimited catalog. Current U.S. pricing, Prime discounts, plan limits and download rules should be checked on Amazon’s product page at signup.
It is a sensible choice when your household already uses Amazon services, but less compelling if you want Apple’s iPhone integration, Spotify’s social discovery or permanent files.
5. TIDAL — best for audio-quality priorities
TIDAL is aimed at listeners who value lossless and higher-quality formats, subject to the current plan, device and catalog labeling. Verify which plans permit offline downloads and whether the specific albums you want are available in the format advertised at TIDAL.
Higher-quality files require more storage. Bluetooth playback may not preserve every benefit of hi-res files, so hardware and listening environment matter. TIDAL is a poor fit if the lowest price, broadest device integration or podcasts matter more than audio quality.

6. Deezer — best for Flow and international listening
Deezer combines personalized Flow recommendations with offline listening for paid subscribers and lossless availability on eligible plans. U.S. availability, pricing, download limits and menu labels should be checked before subscribing because they vary by market. Start at Deezer.
Choose Deezer when its catalog and regional availability suit you; otherwise Apple Music or Spotify generally offers a more familiar iPhone ecosystem.
7. SoundCloud — best for independent uploads and DJ sets
SoundCloud is valuable for independent artists, DJ mixes, remixes and live recordings that may not appear in mainstream catalogs. Offline eligibility depends on Go or Go+ and on rights for each upload. Not every track can be downloaded. Check the current terms at SoundCloud Go.
Because uploads can change or disappear, keep a separate local copy of music you legally own rather than treating a SoundCloud download as permanent ownership.

8. Audiomack — best free in-app option for mixtapes and emerging music
Audiomack’s U.S. App Store listing promotes streaming and downloading songs, mixtapes, albums and playlists for offline listening. Audiomack+ adds benefits such as ad removal and enhanced listening features; exact pricing should be read in the App Store. See the Audiomack listing.
The catalog is particularly strong in mixtapes, hip-hop, Afrobeats and emerging artists, but it is not identical to Apple Music or Spotify. Downloads stay inside Audiomack and are not exportable files; availability varies by track and country.

9. VLC media player — best without a subscription
VLC is a local player, not a licensed streaming catalog. It plays music files you legally obtained and transferred to the iPhone through the Files app, Wi-Fi sharing, Finder/iTunes transfer, or supported cloud and network sources in the current release. Confirm the latest transfer controls and formats on VLC’s iOS page.
Once files are stored locally, playback does not depend on a subscription, account verification or a catalog license. The trade-off is that you must acquire, tag, organize and back up the music yourself.
10. Evermusic — best for cloud libraries
Evermusic is designed for people who keep music in iCloud Drive, Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive or network storage and want an organized offline library. Supported providers, offline limits and subscription features can change, so verify them at Evermusic’s product page.
It is a strong companion for owned files and a poor substitute for a service that supplies mainstream discovery and licensing.
Can you listen to music offline for free?
Free in-app catalogs
Audiomack promotes offline downloads in its U.S. listing, although catalog coverage and track eligibility vary. SoundCloud’s free experience should not be assumed to include unlimited offline playback; eligibility depends on plan and upload rights.
Free local playback
VLC and similar players are free for playback when you provide legally obtained files. They do not provide a free commercial streaming catalog.

What “free” does not mean
Spotify’s free tier currently downloads podcasts, not music. A download button on a streaming service generally creates an encrypted, app-controlled copy rather than an MP3 in Files. Do not use stream rippers or modified apps to extract protected downloads.
Do downloads survive cancellation?
Usually not for subscription catalogs. Cancellation, failed payment, account suspension, a licensing change or a missed online verification can make downloaded titles unavailable. The exact timing differs by service, so do not treat a subscription download as ownership. Purchased tracks and files you supplied yourself remain a separate category.
How much iPhone storage will offline music use?
- Track count and song length.
- Download quality, including lossless or hi-res settings.
- Audio versus music-video downloads.
- Podcasts and audiobooks stored alongside music.
- Available iPhone capacity and app cache behavior.
YouTube Music explicitly ties capacity to available space, file length and quality. Download over Wi-Fi, choose audio-only where available, remove old videos and podcasts inside the app, and keep several gigabytes free for normal iPhone operation.
Prepare your iPhone for a flight or remote trip
- Download albums and playlists on reliable Wi-Fi.
- Choose standard or high quality, and audio-only instead of video when storage is tight.
- Open each important album or playlist and confirm every intended track shows as downloaded.
- Turn on Airplane Mode and test playback before leaving.
- Keep the relevant subscription active and reconnect periodically if the service requires verification.
- Avoid reinstalling a streaming app immediately before travel; downloads generally must be recreated.
- Carry a local-file backup in VLC or Evermusic for flights, remote areas or extended periods without account verification.
Common offline failures and fixes
The download icon appears but playback fails
- Confirm the download finished rather than remaining queued.
- Open the app once while online.
- Check subscription and account status.
- Try the app’s Offline Mode, if available.
- Check whether the title was removed, replaced or restricted in your country.
- Free storage if the iPhone is nearly full.
Downloads vanished after reinstalling
Streaming downloads are app data, so reinstalling commonly removes them. Spotify explicitly requires redownloading after reinstall.

Possible causes include rights restrictions, an upload owner disabling offline access, a removed title, a different country catalog, selecting the wrong version, or adding a new track to a playlist without downloading the updated playlist.
Which app should you choose?
- Best overall iPhone choice: Apple Music.
- Best discovery and playlists: Spotify Premium.
- Best for remixes, live recordings and covers: YouTube Music Premium.
- Best for audio quality: TIDAL or Apple Music, depending on current plan terms and hardware.
- Best free/in-app option: Audiomack, with catalog limitations.
- Best subscription-free player: VLC.
- Best cloud-library manager: Evermusic.
- Best for independent uploads: SoundCloud.
For long stretches without internet, local files are the dependable option. For a large, constantly refreshed catalog, choose the service whose catalog, discovery tools and verification rules fit how you actually listen.
