FMovies is no longer a dependable streaming service. The major FMovies operation went offline in 2024 after enforcement activity reported by TorrentFreak, following months of domain changes and instability. Any site now claiming to be the “official” FMovies should be treated as unverified, not as a trusted replacement. See the shutdown reporting at TorrentFreak and the earlier domain-change report at TorrentFreak.
The best legal substitute depends on what you valued: free on-demand movies, live-channel browsing, library access, personal media, or a fast way to locate one specific title. This US-oriented guide ranks services by those jobs and flags advertising, accounts, device support and regional limits.
Quick comparison
Availability, catalogs and apps change by country, device and licensing agreement. “Free” means no direct subscription charge; it may still involve advertising or library eligibility.

|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tubi | General free on-demand viewing | Free | Yes | On-demand | Optional for basic viewing; confirm current flow | US service; catalog is location-dependent |

| The Roku Channel | Roku-centered television viewing | Free, with paid listings also present | Usually on free titles | On-demand and selected live content | Varies by market and device | Check whether it is supported where you live |

| Kanopy | Ad-free library and educational films | Included through participating library or university | Generally no commercial breaks | On-demand | Eligible card or institutional login | Participation and monthly limits vary |
| Hoopla | Digital borrowing through libraries | Included through participating library | Generally no commercial breaks | On-demand borrowing | Eligible library card | Borrowing limits are library-specific |
| YouTube | Official free films and channels | Mixed: free, rental, purchase and subscription | Varies | Mostly on-demand | Often needed for account features | Verify the uploader and title rights |
| JustWatch | Finding one title legally | Free discovery tool | Not a streaming catalog | Search and comparison | Optional | Use the country-specific version |
| Fandango at Home | One-off rentals and purchases | Rental or purchase | No ad-supported substitute | On-demand | Account and payment required | Prices and rights vary by title |
| Rotating paid service or trial | Current releases and exclusives | Subscription; trial if offered | Plan-dependent | On-demand | Usually required; trials can auto-renew | Check current provider terms |
What happened to FMovies?
FMovies was an unlicensed streaming network rather than a licensed mainstream platform. Its domains changed before the major operation went offline in 2024. That history explains why search results can still show clones, mirrors or unrelated sites using the FMovies name. A new domain, HTTPS padlock or “official” logo does not establish ownership, licensing or safety. This guide therefore excludes pirate mirrors and focuses on services with identifiable licensing, library authorization or official distribution.

How to choose a legitimate replacement
Compare services against the features that made FMovies attractive instead of treating every “free” site as interchangeable.
- Legality: Look for licensed, library-authorized, public-domain or official distributor content.
- Cost: Separate free with ads, library access, rentals, purchases and subscriptions.
- Catalog: Check whether you need movies, series, documentaries, classics, anime or live channels.
- Control: Live channels are not the same as selecting a specific title on demand.
- Advertising: Free services usually fund playback with commercial breaks.
- Availability: A service can operate in your country while a particular film is unavailable there.
- Devices: Confirm current support for your browser, phone, smart TV, Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, console or other streamer.
- Access: Registration, a library card or a university login may be required for some features.
- Discovery: Watchlists and recommendations help inside a service; JustWatch searches across services.
- Accessibility: Check captions, subtitles, audio description and language tracks for the specific title.
The 10 best alternatives
1. Tubi — best overall free on-demand option
Tubi is the closest general replacement for viewers who want to choose a movie or episode without paying a monthly subscription. Tubi describes its service as free, legal and ad-supported, and says it works across web, mobile, smart TVs, consoles and streaming devices. Its own service information is at Tubi’s help center and Tubi’s welcome page.
- Best for: Broad, casual movie and TV browsing.
- Strength: On-demand playback rather than a channel schedule.
- Trade-off: Ads interrupt viewing, and the catalog rotates by territory.
- Important limit: Free ad-supported services cannot promise every current theatrical release.
2. Pluto TV — best for live-channel browsing
Pluto TV suits viewers who enjoyed turning on a stream and browsing whatever was playing. It combines scheduled live channels with on-demand programming at pluto.tv.
- Best for: A cable-like experience without a bill.
- Strength: Channel discovery plus selected on-demand titles.
- Trade-off: A schedule is less flexible than selecting any film at any time.
- Check first: Channel lineups and title rights differ by region.
3. The Roku Channel — best for Roku households
The Roku Channel offers free ad-supported films and shows, while supported markets may also display rentals, purchases or premium add-ons. Start at Roku’s official page and distinguish free listings from paid ones.

8. JustWatch — best way to find a specific movie
JustWatch is a legal availability search engine, not a universal free streaming catalog. At JustWatch US, search a title, set your country and filter for free, ads, library, subscription, rent or buy.
- Best for: Avoiding a long hunt across separate apps.
- Trade-off: “Free” may mean ad-supported, library access or inclusion in a subscription.
9. Fandango at Home — best for one-off rentals
When a new or obscure film is absent from free services, a single rental at Fandango at Home can be more economical than adding another monthly plan.
- Best for: A specific current or hard-to-find movie.
- Trade-off: It is paid; rental windows, quality and prices vary by title.
10. A rotating paid service or official trial — best for current releases
Paid platforms are more likely to carry recent originals and exclusive series. Rather than naming one permanent winner, use JustWatch for the title and then review the provider’s current plan, trial, cancellation and auto-renewal terms.
- Best for: New releases and exclusives unavailable on free services.
- Trade-off: A trial is temporary and can become a paid subscription if not canceled.
Which service fits your viewing goal?
| Your priority | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Free, on-demand movies and shows | Tubi | General catalog with ad-supported playback |
| Live channels and casual browsing | Pluto TV | Channel-oriented viewing plus on-demand titles |
| Streaming-device convenience | Tubi, Pluto TV or The Roku Channel | Broad device options, subject to market |
| Ad-free library films | Kanopy | Participating library or university access |
| Borrowing with a library card | Hoopla | Digital lending model |
| Personal media plus free streaming | Plex | Two functions in one platform, with separate rights responsibilities |
| A particular title | JustWatch | Cross-service legal search |
| A recent movie | Fandango at Home or a legitimate subscription | New releases are less likely to be permanently free |
How to find a movie when no free service has it
- Search the title on JustWatch and select your country.
- Filter for free, ads, library, rent or buy rather than assuming one category.
- Check Kanopy and Hoopla if your library or school participates.
- Look for an official studio, distributor or broadcaster upload on YouTube.
- Compare a one-time Fandango at Home rental with the cost of another subscription.
- Check subscriptions you already pay for before starting a new trial.
- Ask your library about a physical copy, then wait for the film to rotate into a free catalog if timing is flexible.
Are FMovies clones safe?
Do not treat a clone as legitimate merely because it uses HTTPS or resembles the old design. Leave a page that shows any of these warning signs:

Tubi contrasts its licensed service with illegal sites that can expose viewers to security warnings, pop-ups, malware or redirects; that comparison is available in its service explanation. Antivirus software, an ad blocker or a VPN may affect privacy or browsing risk, but none grants copyright permission or makes an unlicensed stream legitimate.

This list is US-oriented, not a worldwide guarantee. Catalogs can change by country, state, library system, device and individual licensing agreement. Verify the service’s official app-store listing and support pages before creating an account. For US title searches, the Motion Picture Association maintains a legal-viewing directory at motionpictures.org/watch-it-legally.
Bottom line
Start with Tubi for free on-demand viewing, Pluto TV for live-channel browsing, Kanopy or Hoopla if your library participates, and Plex if you also manage a lawful personal media collection. Use JustWatch whenever you need one specific movie, and choose a rental or legitimate subscription for current releases. None is a complete copy of FMovies, but together they provide a safer, legal way to cover the same viewing needs without chasing unstable mirror domains.

Can I watch new theatrical releases free legally?
Usually not immediately. New films generally reach rental, purchase or subscription services before any free ad-supported or library catalog, and timing varies by title.
Do I need a library card for Kanopy or Hoopla?
Yes, in most cases you need a card from a participating public library or an eligible university login. Participation and limits are set by the institution.
What is best for television series?
Tubi, Pluto TV, Plex and official YouTube channels are useful starting points, but series rights are highly regional. JustWatch can show which legal service currently carries a specific series.
Can I watch without creating an account?
Requirements differ by service, device and feature. Check the provider’s current playback screen; watchlists, synchronization, rentals and library lending commonly require sign-in.
