For a full live-TV guide, choose a dedicated IPTV client whose current Mac listing confirms the features you need. For a free, dependable way to open a stream or playlist, start with VLC. They are not interchangeable: VLC, IINA, Kodi and Infuse can play streams or media, but do not automatically provide the account management, channel guide and provider-style navigation of a dedicated IPTV app.
An IPTV player is playback software, not a TV service. You supply a playlist or login from a source you are entitled to use. Mac availability, pricing and app features can change, so check the linked listing for your country and macOS version before installing.

Which Mac IPTV player should you choose?
Best dedicated-client direction: IPTV Expert or IPTV One, after checking the current listing
Dedicated clients are the natural choice when you want channel groups, favorites, a guide, and possibly VOD or series sections in one interface. IPTV Expert is reported to support M3U/M3U8, Xtream Codes API and Stalker Portal, while IPTV One is also presented as a Mac-focused alternative. Confirm those details before paying; do not rely on a publisher’s “tested” ranking as independent performance evidence.
If you need a purchase today and want stronger platform-specific documentation, IPTV Smarters Player Expert has a verified Mac App Store listing in the supplied research. It requires macOS 11 or later and lists M3U/M3U8, Xtream Codes and Stalker Portal support. It is free to download but offers in-app purchases. Its privacy disclosures include identifiers, usage, advertising data and diagnostics that the developer says are not linked to the user; these are App Store disclosures, not an independent audit.
IPTV Smarters Pro: plausible, but not established
IPTV Smarters Pro has a Mac listing and describes local playlists, M3U, Xtream Codes, guide-style features, search, favorites and Picture in Picture. In the US snapshot cited in August 2026, it was listed at $4.99. The listing did not have enough ratings to display an overview in that snapshot, so treat it as an emerging option rather than a proven reliability pick. Similar names do not establish that two IPTV Smarters apps share a developer or reputation.

Best free fallback: VLC
VLC is the straightforward choice when you need to open a direct stream or M3U playlist without buying a dedicated IPTV client. VideoLAN’s Mac download page lists version 3.0.23 and separate Intel, Apple Silicon and Universal packages; it states macOS 10.7.5 or later. Check the current download package for your Mac rather than assuming every old system can run every release.
VLC’s strength is playback compatibility, not cable-like navigation. It does not provide the polished channel database, provider-style EPG, VOD categories or Xtream login flow expected from a dedicated client. If it plays a stream but your guide is blank, that is not a VLC guide failure so much as a mismatch between a general player and a guide-focused task.
Best Mac-focused general player: IINA
IINA is free, open source and designed for macOS, using mpv. The official page lists version 1.4.4, with macOS 12 or later required on Apple Silicon and macOS 10.15 or later on Intel. It supports online streams and macOS features such as Picture in Picture. Choose it for a more Mac-oriented player when you mainly open stream URLs or simple playlists—not as a complete subscription manager with verified Xtream, EPG, catch-up and VOD workflows.

Best customizable media center: Kodi
Kodi is free and extensible, with official downloads for Intel and Apple Silicon Macs. Its macOS page lists Kodi 21.3 “Omega” and macOS 10.14 or later. IPTV is generally configured through a PVR/IPTV add-on, not supplied automatically by installing Kodi. This flexibility suits a patient user building a TV-style media center; it is less suitable if you expect to paste provider credentials and immediately get a finished guide. Add-on maintenance, behavior and legality can vary.
Best for a personal media library: Infuse
Infuse is a polished general player and media library for Apple platforms, with network playback, subtitles, metadata and PiP among its described capabilities. Its App Store listing offers a free download and optional Infuse Pro subscription. It may suit a Mac owner combining personal media with some streams, but the supplied information does not confirm full Xtream Codes login or a conventional IPTV EPG workflow. Dedicated IPTV app or general player?

Do not treat feature labels as guarantees. “EPG support” means an app can consume guide data; it does not mean the provider’s XMLTV or Xtream feed is complete, correctly mapped or current. Catch-up is provider-side archive/time-shift access, not the same as recording. VOD is a separate catalog supplied by the provider, not a recording of live channels. What to check before you install
- Mac compatibility: Verify the exact app’s Mac listing, minimum macOS, and Intel versus Apple Silicon support. Do not infer Mac support from an iPhone or Android listing.
- Login type: Check whether you have an M3U/M3U8 URL or file, Xtream Codes credentials, a Stalker/MAG portal, a direct stream URL, or XMLTV guide data. Not every app accepts every type.
- Guide expectations: Ask whether EPG is included with the login, arrives as a separate XMLTV URL, or must be mapped. Stale time zones, missing programs and wrongly matched channels often originate in the source data.
- Large playlists: A very large M3U can import slowly, duplicate channels, omit logos or strain an app. If your provider supports Xtream login, try that first; otherwise request a smaller or filtered playlist. This is a practical option, not a guarantee of faster performance.

- Cost: Separate the app’s price from any lawful content-service subscription. Paying for a player does not buy channels or viewing rights. Free apps may still have limitations; freemium apps may include ads or paid features.
Set up your own playlist
M3U or M3U8 in a dedicated app
- Get the playlist URL or file from a provider you are entitled to use.
- Install the app from its official developer site or the Mac App Store, then choose its playlist-add/import control.
- Paste the URL or select the local file and wait for the channel list to finish importing.
- Open the live-TV or channel area and test several channels. A single working stream does not confirm the whole playlist is healthy.
- If the app offers a separate EPG field, add the provider’s XMLTV URL or configure the guide source as instructed by the provider.
- Set favorites and remove duplicates or dead entries if the app provides those controls.
Xtream Codes login, where the app supports it
- Choose the app’s Xtream Codes, API login or equivalent option.
- Enter the server address, username and password exactly as supplied. Do not publish real credentials or reuse example credentials found online.
- Allow the catalog to import, then check the live, VOD, series and guide sections that your provider supplies.
- If login fails, confirm the server address, scheme and port with the provider and check for account/device or simultaneous-stream limits.
Control names differ between applications, so do not assume every app uses the same menu path. Keep the credentials private and consider the app’s privacy practices before entering them.
VLC, IINA and Kodi alternatives
For VLC, install it from VideoLAN, open its network-stream option, paste a direct stream or playlist URL and start playback; a local M3U can be opened as a file. The exact menu wording can vary by release. VLC may play entries without displaying an IPTV-style EPG or provider catalog.

For IINA, open a direct stream URL or M3U file, use its playlist panel to navigate and enable PiP if useful. Treat it as a playback tool rather than an account manager.
For Kodi, install Kodi from the official macOS page, then configure a compatible PVR/IPTV add-on with the playlist and, if supported, XMLTV guide data. Wait for the guide database to populate. Installing Kodi alone does not provide channels.
Troubleshooting common problems
- Playlist will not load: Recheck the URL or file, network connection and provider status. A URL may expire or require provider-side settings. If the playlist is huge, ask for a filtered list or use another supported login method.
- Login rejected: Check for a mistyped server address, username or password, then ask the provider whether the account is active and whether a connection limit applies. Do not send credentials to an unofficial “activation” service.
- Some channels are missing or duplicated: The source playlist may contain dead links, duplicates or inconsistent groups. A player cannot repair a provider’s channel inventory.
- EPG is blank, stale or wrong: Confirm that guide data is actually supplied, that an XMLTV source is configured when needed, and that channel mapping and time-zone settings are correct. App-level EPG support cannot correct bad source data.
- Playback buffers: Buffering can come from server load, routing, bandwidth, expired access, concurrent-stream limits or an incompatible stream. Do not assume a different player will fix provider-side congestion, and be cautious of “buffer-free” claims.
- The app freezes during import: Retry with a smaller list if possible, allow time for initial parsing, and check app and macOS compatibility. Large catalogs can expose app limitations; the available evidence does not establish a playlist-size winner among these options.
- Your Mac cannot install the app: Compare your macOS version and processor with the official listing. An older Intel Mac may need a player with legacy compatibility; a listing that says “Mac” is not enough to establish support for every Mac.

Is IPTV legal on a Mac?
